WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 77 – ANIMAL

There seems to be a very strong recurring theme in the majority of this week’s submissions for ANIMAL. I didn’t get the weekly reminder out this week because I was sick most of last week and sickness always turns into laziness for me.

But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about trends. You just want to see the submissions:

I might have to make a no cat rule for next cycle’s ANIMAL theme.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 78 - SILHOUETTE
SILHOUETTE!

But what is a SILHOUETTE! How about this definition:

the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background, especially in dim light.

Seems like a solid definition to me. You might not need to worry about the dim light part so much. It would help, but definitely backlight something, so you can only see the outline of your subject. Should be interesting! Good luck!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.

Want your own Photography 139 email subscription? Call, email, or text me and I’ll get you the hook up.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very shadowy Monday!

  1. Dang, Chris. I never marked you for a man with so many “cat people” as friends. Are you secretly a cat person?

Wow, my phone photo looks like CRAP. It was above my head and all, but that dude super looked like Animal from The Muppets in real life.

  2. I fear that my long standing reputation for hating cats (#fakenews) has come back to bite me.

I can assure you while I don’t hate cats, I am far from a cat person. I usually stop visiting a person’s house after they get a cat. I have been developing a shirt with a friend that simply reads.

    Bag.
    Rocks.
    Cat.
    River.

We also may develop a line of cat bags with an easy to pull string that seals the cat in the bag. Our exclusive platinum line of bags has lead in the lining, so you don’t even have to bother to find your own rocks.

But like I said, I don’t hate cats.

However, I have managed to get rid of every cat that has wandered in to my neighborhood.

That isn’t because I hate cats. That is because I have to protect my property value. I can’t have a cat in the neighborhood. Hanging around and driving down home values. This is a neighborhood for people that can afford real pets.

There is plenty of room for you in the cat district north of the railroad tracks.

Yes. Cell phone photos are the great lie. I’m not saying that picture is bad. I am saying that you (being an Apple fangirl) probably rock out with an iPhone. iPhones (and all other cell phones actually) have very high contrast and saturation screens that make almost any photo look good. It isn’t until you see them at full resolution you are often like, “Cell phone photos kind of suck.”

But many times, they are the only option. Not iPhones. #teampixel is where it is at.

  3. I misspoke earlier. The correct order is:

    Bag.
    Cat.
    Rocks.
    River.

A pox upon me for a clumsy lout!

  4. I admittedly don’t have a great deal of experience bagging up a cat and throwing it in the river, but I feel like a base of rocks with a cat on top is the right method, or else you’re just smooshing the cat prior to the drowning if you put it in first. So I think your faux pas was actually correct?

We tried, for Alice’s sake, to get two cats. Not only my soul hates them, but my body, as my allergic reaction was ridiculous. I just really, really am not a cat person. I don’t particularly like a-holes in real life, so I won’t seek them out in a pet.

I DO admittedly have an iPhone, but not because I think they are superior products at all – just because the SE is small enough to fit into my pocket (women’s front pants pockets are tiny). Also, all of the music I bought for my array of iPods is compatible. But yes, the photo always looks awesome on the screen, and then looks like a giant turd (forgive the lack of eloquence) when I view it large. It pains me that the gross majority of photos from when the kids were tiny are from my phone.

  5. If you are throwing a bag of cats into the river, you are right. It is easier to already have the rocks in the bag before the cat. However, this is more about the building of the tension.

    You start reading:

    Bag.

Interesting. A bag? This shirt could be going anywhere. And I am along for the journey.

Cat. Hmmm… I like or loathe cats. Let’s see where this is going.

Rocks. I loathe cats. I know where this is going. Or I like cats. That doesn’t make any sense.

River. I loathe cats. Touchdown! Or I like cats. What kind of evil person would make such a shirt.

I’ve never understood why people buy cats either. I do believe it is caused by low self-esteem. They hate themselves, might as well have a pet that hate them too. I mean, they aren’t worthy of love.

There is going to be a tremendous amount of memories lost when the Trumpocalypse comes in the next few months. But fortunately, most of those lost memories will be from cell phone pictures or Facebook. I’m pretty sure he is just going to start randomly hitting nuke buttons on his way out the door after he is impeached.

  6. That makes sense! I was assuming it to be more of a sequence, I didn’t consider the building of anticipation. I’d probably order one of those shirts, if you do end up making them. Shannon knows that their cat when we were growing up would be somewhere in my Top 25 most hated living things ever.

I think the low self-esteem assessment is pretty dead-on. That or it’s that they just aren’t invested really in having an animal, so they get one that is only perfunctorily affectionate, and is mostly self-sufficient.

Yeah, I’m pretty sure he’s hitting all of the red buttons. I’m just not sure, at this point, which will be the impeachable offense. It’s clearly going to have to do with Russia and HOW THE HELL IS SESSIONS STILL EMPLOYED.

  7. I actually, pretty badly wanted to go down to the pro-Easy D rally on Saturday, but I already had plans. I had some great ideas for some parody signs.:

    “Putin is my co-pilot.”
    “Trust Fund Babies Unite”
“Anybody Could Go Bankrupt 6 Times”
“Equal Rights 4 All. Some More Equal than Others.”
“2nd Amendment. 2nd to the Constitution. 1st in my heart.”
“Burn the intellectuals and the people who know “things” about “stuff”.”
“Global Warming is true than Santa Claus is a lie!”

I also would’ve like to seen if they would’ve let me set up a table to collect signature for a petition to repeal the 19th Amendment.

I saw some polls on his Easy D.’s popularity rates. It terrifies me how high they are AND they are at a historical low at the same time.

If I had a list of the Top 25 Animals I’ve ever hated, pretty sure they’d be almost all cats and a few dachshunds.

  8. I love every single one of those signs. The only problem is that I haven’t gathered a great sense of irony from Easy D’s supporters thus far. Nuance seems to be a foreign concept. These people take his sideshow distractions (now it’s Obama wire-tapping!) bait every time and don’t focus on whatever he’s trying to slight-of-hand that is more important. So, in short, I’m POSITIVE you would have been able to garner signatures for your petition. I thought I remembered someone on his staff or some pundit saying after the election that women shouldn’t really be voting, anyway?

I think I know one or two of the dachshunds you mention. Cats rarely surprise one by not being terrible. The one good thing about them is that they are pretty well as awful as you expect them to be. Dogs are at least good animals overall, so the bad ones are a surprise.

  9. Also, and totally unrelated, I tried listening to This Is Spinal Tap while working – that was a backfire. You really have to see the performances in that to make it a complete experience. That is irrelevant to the above conversation, but I know you of all people would sympathize.
