Analog Efex Pro

Recently my WB Joe stumbled across an article that Google had made their Nik Plugins free.

I rushed to the website and downloaded this collection of 7 plugins to play with immediately.

I thought I would give you a quick overview of some of the settings of these plugins, starting with the Analog Efex Pro plugin.

The description of this plugin from the website is as follows:

Get the photo you’re looking for, even if you don’t own the equipment. Let effects inspired by traditional cameras bring you back to the vintage age of photo development.

There are 9 default classic cameras you can start from and I’ll show you what those look like.

Let’s start with the original image from a gas station in tourist hot spot Cottonwood Falls, Kansas (photo assistant – Nate Miller).

When I took this photo, this was my original vision.

Here is a look at the 9 default Classic Camera settings in the Plugin.

But these Classic Cameras are just a jumping off point. Within this plugin you can play with roughly 50 different DIRT & SCRATCHES settings, 3 different LENS VIGNETTE settings, and roughly 50 different FILM TYPE settings.

I played with it a bit and came up with this image that feels like Cottonwood Falls, Kansas to me:

Analog Efex Pro

It is a cool FREE plugin to grab and add to your arsenal. Especially if you’re like me and love old and vintage photography.

Works with Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements (more or less), and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

There are several more plugins in this collection. We’ll be taking a look at those as well.

Desolation View

On my recent trip to Kansas I stopped and took a few photos here and there.

Kansans were burning their prairie, which made for interesting views. I missed a golden opportunity to get a pretty sweet fire picture. So I did stop to get a picture of the aftermath of a prairie fire.

This scene was right across the highway from a Scenic View. I found it to be scenic.

Store

This week’s collection was supposed to be from the folder SNOW. That folder is just too large to go through in a weekend that involved 15 or so hours in the car.

So I skipped ahead to STORE, because it is considerably less ambitious.

In this small collection is an image of a tool that was instrumental in the manufacture of the Photography Calendar for several years. Craft Night. A young Nate starting on the path to becoming a Master Baker. That was when I used to participate in the whole feed your co-workers on your work anniversary scam at the Computer Mine.

That peanut butter cake though…

AIN’T NO PLACE TO HAVE A BABY

When you got no man to give it his last name…

And her folks back in Manhattan didn’t want her or her bundle…

So she took her child and caught an evening train…

She found a job in Denver washing dishes in a diner…

At least it buys her baby milk to drink…

He once told her she was pretty…

But the only ring it got her…

Was the ring of grease that runs around the sink…

Yes she lay beside him gentle…

‘Cause he told her that he loved her…

And he made her dance before the music played…

But at least she didn’t beg him…

She’d rather wash her dishes…

It makes her feel as if her hands are clean…

Check Out this A Hole!

When you read the subject of this entry, you probably thought that this post was going to be about the Iowa Caucuses, but actually it is an image from my most recent trip to visit Nate and Laura.

Behold!

The A in Manhattan

Laura tells me that it is quite the thing for people of Manhattan to get their picture taken in the “A hole” of the giant Manhattan sign that graces their skyline.

For the record, I’ve never consider the blank parts of letters to be holes. I guess that is just me.

John 14:27

I found this barn and its hopeful message along I70 (or as a Kansan might say 70 Interstate) on my recent trip to visit Nate and Laura. I vowed to stop and take a picture of it on my way home.

Mission accomplished.

Know God... Know Peace

While this saying has graced many a bumper sticker, you won’t actually find it in THE BIBLE. I’m usually fairly coy about the titles of the posts in this here blog (even though I’m sure most of them end up being fairly transparent), however, I will flat out tell you if you go read that particular verse, I think it is what this bumper sticker theology is trying to say.

Although intellectual honesty makes me point out I’m not a noted theologian. I don’t even play one on television. You know every once in awhile, PHOTOGRAPHY 139 needs to get in touch with its roots and give a small reminder of where the name comes from.

KS

I spent the last weekend in Manhattan, Kansas and accomplished all of my goals for that trip:

1. Witness an Iowa State victory.
2. Eat Nate’s cooking.
3. Eat a Varsity Donut.
4. Get to the top of Manhattan Hill.
5. Get to the top of KS Hill.

I have new goals for my next trip to Manhattan, but I’ll share those after I go there.

But we should really focus on Goal #5. Get to the top of KS Hill. I don’t know a lot about the city of Manhattan, but based on their landmarks, it was founded by people that like making large concrete letters.

On one side of the river is a giant MANHATTAN made out of the concrete letters. On the other side of the river is a giant KS. Also made out of concrete letters.

The picture below is the view from on top of the giant KS.

My return trip to Manhattan will involve warmer weather and better planning on my part. This view from KS Hill is just one of many things in Manhattan that I want to photograph at night.

An Irrevocable Condition

Often times when I put calendars out into the world, I worry about what kind of home it will receive. Will it be loved? Will it be adored? Will it end up on a wall with tons of writing on it?

Recently I received a couple text pictures of Photography 139 Calendars in their new homes.

While it might seem that I’m soliciting such images, I am not, but I do love getting them.

Here are those 2 images, Photogrpahy 139 Calendars. Home.

Colleen’s Calendar

Becca’s Calendar

I’m glad to see these calendars have found good, loving homes in Arizona.

Kansas Weed

Sharing another picture from a west(ish) Kansas sunset because Laura says that west(ish) Kansas has the best sunsets.

When I told people I was going to visit Manhattan, they usually say: “Cool!”

Then I say, “No, the one in Kansas.”

Then they say, “Oh.”

After a long bit of silence they say, “Why?”

I can’t say that the restaurants have as good of food as real Manhattan (but Nate’s food more than compensates) or the sites are as interesting as real Manhattan. But the people can’t be beat. Think I’ll go back in January.
