Covering 3 folders in this walk down to Memory Lane since a couple of them had barely any pictures in them. The pictures in the folders 2010-03-17, 2010-03-20, and 2010-03-25 involve mostly a series of publicity stills I took for an ACTORS production and a cruise around Boone County I took with Jay.

This collection of pictures really made me want to support local arts more. I don’t know that was ever supportive of the local arts in a way I should. I want to go see some community theater productions. I want to go see live local music. When this virus gets managed, I think this is one of my goals. One of the things I want to do. Support some local artists!

Honey Hollow

A few Saturdays back, I went on a small road trip with my Mom. We went to the State Center Rose Garden. We went to the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge. We went to Hardee’s in Indianola! Then we ended up at Shannon and Jason’s store Honey Hollow. It is located in their lower level of their house near Indianola. It is really nice!

You can buy honey, creamed honey (which apparently is a thing), bees. hive equipment, wax, soap, and brooms there. Here is how you get there:

“Located halfway between Des Moines and Indianola, Iowa. Head south out of Des Moines on highway 65/69 toward Indianola until you come to Summerset Rd. Turn east and we are .6 miles down Summerset Rd, nestled between Summerset Trail and Plug Run Creek. Our 2 story log cabin is very visible from the road.”

Their hours are something like 5-8 on Tuesday nights and 10-2 on Saturdays. I might be wrong about that, but it isn’t it more important that is just feels right?

I’ll go more into the creamed honey at a later date.

The pictures in the folders 2010-03-01 and 2010-03-04 are mostly from some pictures I took for the Computer Mine newsletter and for Personal Photo Project #10.

That PERSONAL PHOTO PROJECT was to take a picture of Jill’s foot and place it behind a window. Sadly, the resulting piece of work fell into disrepair. I threw it in the basement to store. During the recent basement workings I found it again. Not sure what to do with it. Probably time for the trash pile, but maybe great pieces of art should be burned like a flag. Or it will probably will just continue to take up space in my basement.

Today is the last day of 2019. Therefore, I will reveal the November and December images for the 2020 Photography 139 Calendar.

November Image:

November

The November image is a collection of dew drops that were trapped in a spiderweb. The spiderweb was located on a evergreen bush in my front yard. This picture was selected to be entered in the Boone County Fair Photography Contest by Michelle Haupt. It received a Blue Ribbon. This picture was taken July 14, 2018.

December

The December image is of Old Highway 30 crossing through the Des Moines River Valley between Boone and Ogden. The image looks west towards Ogden as the sun begins to set. On the left is the Jay Carlson Wildlife Area. In the distance Seven Oaks can be seen. This picture was entered in the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon, but was not selected for display. This picture was taken March 8, 2019.

Before I left for the Mission Trip, I agreed to photograph the graduation of the Boone Area Humane Society’s Dog Obedience Class for Kio. Here are some of my favorite images from the experience:

Guess I’ll see you in 2020. Happy New Year’s Eve if you’re the type that celebrates. I believe I have successfully escaped being invited to a New Year’s Eve Party for like at least the 10th straight year!

The pictures from the folder 2009-06-12 are from the Burnin’ Sensations Ames on the Half Shell concert in 2009. It rained that day, so the concert got moved to DJ’s Taphouse.

I believe that Burnin’ Sensations have played Ames on the Half Shell every single year since Ames on the Half Shell began. They are your basic classic rock cover band, but they put on a very fun show.

The pictures from the folder 2009-06-06 are from the first Ames on the Half Shell concert of the 2009 season. The band that played was Vivace. I’m not sure if they are still around, but they were just a real solid classic rock cover band. Classic rock cover band pretty much describes the local music scene in central Iowa and pretty much describes almost every band to ever play Ames on the Half Shell.

I drastically upgraded the Ames on the Half Shell website before this season. It looks like they still use the same platform that I built, but they have upgraded the look considerably. What is interesting is that they added a “History” page that lists every band that has played Ames on the Half Shell, except they don’t have anything listed for 2009.

That same year they Ames on the Half Shell logo was completely redesigned. It looks like the logo has been updated since then, but still plays on the same theme.

Sometime in late 2008 my organizational process of my photos went all FUBAR. The result is that it appears that I have actually lost several images from late 2008 and early 2009.

None of the lost pictures are of much consequence, but it is annoying nonetheless.

Part of this breakdown in the system was that it seems that rather than breaking images into folders by date, I just dumped a ton of pictures into the December folder.

Fortunately for you, I don’t usually take a ton of pictures in December. However, this still potentially might be one long journal entry.

There are pictures from Iowa State at night, Toys for Tots, an American Legion event in Roland, Iowa State basketball, Shannon dressed nice for once, a night with the Daniels, and crayfish that took home from a Chinese buffet.

Here we go:

Looking at those pictures something that struck me is that I had forgotten how badly Greg McDermott had destroyed Iowa State’s basketball program. Thank you Creighton for taking him off of our hands! It is a debt that can never be repaid!

Summer Reading Kickoff

This is the last collection of photos that I believe I’ll ever publish that were taken for the Boone Area Humane Society.

Perhaps I shouldn’t say “ever”. But I’m guessing it will be for at the very least, for the foreseeable future.

These pictures were taken at the Ericson Public Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff.

The main things I remember about the day was the kid that was supposed to play Hope the BAHS Mascot was about an hour late. He went in and put the costume on. Then he walked around for maybe 10 minutes. Then he left.

In that 10 minutes, I was able to get a few pictures of Hope in action:

I will say that the Summer Reading Kickoff is a pretty cool event. If you have a kid, I would highly recommend attending.

Way back in May of 2018 I went to the Boone Area Humane Society’s Dog Obedience School to take some pictures of the class for the Boone Area Humane Society newsletter. A publication of some note.

I have no clue what picture they used, but here are some of the options they were given:

Here is an update on my goal to eat out for lunch only/less than 20% of the time in 2019.

I am currently 0/13 for the month of February. Combine that with January’s 1/22, I am currently 1/35 for 2019. I am currently at 3.0%. Pretty much crushing my goal of 20%!

I have currently spent $43.21 on lunch groceries in February.

Estimating that it costs me $10 (at the aggregate level) to go out to lunch per day, I have currently saved in the month of February:

$86.79

Last week I once again had overnight oats. The recipe I used was similar to last week’s recipe, but I made a couple of switches:

Ingredients

1/2 cup uncooked old fashioned oats
2/3 cup skim milk
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
3 teaspoons dried chia seeds
2 tablespoon peanut butter
1 banana

I bought an organic non-GMO peanut butter, that didn’t taste the best. Not bad, but certainly no Jif. But by the end of the week it had grown on me.

If you have any recipes you would like me to try, leave them in the COMMENTS section of this here blog. The recipe needs to be easy. I mean really easy. Plus, relatively healthy. I eat bad enough as it is on weekends.

I’ve still only eaten fast food twice in 2019.

Sometimes I still stare longingly at B-Bop’s through the Computer Mine kitchen window.

There is quite the collection of images in the folder called 10-13-08. I can’t possibly include all of them in this here entry, so I’ll just have to pick out a few that I like the most.

The pictures range from Gyro Day at the Computer Mine to the Ames Party Bus in action to a road trip to Kalona with Mom, Teresa, and Jay.

While I’m not 100% sure, I believe that is the last of my Ames Party Bus pictures. Which means I should explain why you haven’t seen Becky driving around the Ames Party Bus in 10 years.

I might not be getting the details 100% correct, but the spirit of what I’m writing is dead on.

Shortly after Becky finished restored the Ames Party Bus and began putting out an APB on fun, Big Party Bus felt threatened. In fact they were scared. Petrified.

Big Party Bus checked their address book to look up which state representatives they had in their back pockets. Then they went to these bought politicians and pulled their chains.

The bought politicians reacted by passing a law that made party buses carry an exorbitant amount of insurance. Like an incredible amount of insurance. Insurance that was price-prohibitive.

This effectively shutdown the small-time party bus. Becky was out of business, shortly after the party had begun. Rich people win again.
