A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 23

Last night was the lighted parade in Boone. While I was walking around the mean streets of urban Boone, it dawned on me that it was a perfect opportunity to knock out Page 23 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Page 23 – Photograph a shadow

To make image more unique, I really leaned into the contrast and clarity of the image to make it somewhat film noir. I like to think THE OUTER LIMITS.

While I was up at the lighted parade I got a somewhat indecent proposal from Santa Claus, but I’ll share that at a later date.

When RAGBRAI came through Boone a few months back, I knew it would be a great chance to tackle Page 44 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT.

Therefore I took a day off from the day job, grabbed my camera, and began walking down Old 30 between Boone and Ogden.

Page 44 – Take us on a journey through your picture.

I took hundreds more pictures of the RAGBRAI experience, but I’ll share those at a later date.

Next time we check in on THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT, we’ll… I have no clue what page we’ll check in on. I need to get out there and take some more pictures!

A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 70-71

As the 2018 political season wound down, I found it to be a perfect time to tackle Page 70 and then subsequently Page 71 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Page 70 – Take a picture of something you hate.

There are few things in the world I hate more than the “stick-to” narrative. This belief that everybody has a right to express their political opinion, except for artists and athletes. Since I happen to be both (Monstars, represent!), it is something that hits home.

When a plumber or a line cook expresses a political opinion, nobody is out there saying, “Stick to plumbing” or “Stick to cooking”.

But whenever an athlete or an actor expresses a political opinion you hear a chorus of “Hey pal, stick to sports, just stick to sports.”

Which is weird because athletes like Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali (to name just a couple) have been instrumental in leading social change.

Even stranger still is the people who come down on artists. It is the job of the artist to say some thing. That is the point of art. It isn’t always political, but sometimes, that is going to be political. Banksy is probably the greatest political artist of our times. It would be tragic if he was silent.

Back at the end of August I had a free Saturday afternoon, so I decided to head out to Big Creek and tackle Page 40 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Create a playlist. Now listen to it while out taking pictures.

It was hard for me to determine the exact appropriate length for a playlist, so I sorta cheated on that aspect. I decided to just use the soundtrack from BABY DRIVER. It is, perhaps, the best soundtrack in movie history. Especially with the way it is intertwined into the movie.

I currently enter 3 photo “contests” a year. The Boone County Fair, The Iowa State Fair, and Pufferbilly Days. After the contests are over, a bag up the photos I entered and put them in a trunk.

While I was putting the Iowa State Fair entries in the trunk I decided it would be a good time to take Page 47 for THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT.

Page 47 – Re-photograph a photograph to change its original meaning.

This is the only setup I shot for this page, therefore there aren’t any alternates for this page.

Next time we check in with THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT, we will probably visit Page 40.

I took Page 78 of the PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT on the morning of the Barbecue Contest of the Iowa State Fair.

I came back to the Iowa State Fair on the last day of the fair to take the companion picture.

Page 78 was to “Photograph a place that’s nondescript during the day…”

Page 79 – …but comes alive at night.

Only one picture can be physically adhered into the physical copy of THE PHOTO JOURNAL, but I did take several other pictures that night.

Nader and Jesse were photo assistants for this photo shoot.

Next time we check in with THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT, we will probably check in with Page 40.

While I was at the Iowa State Fair, I came across a great subject for Page 78 and Page 79 for THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT.

On my first trip to the Iowa State Fair I took the picture for Page 78. I’ll share those pictures today and you’ll have to wait for Page 79:

Page 78 – Photograph a place that’s nondescript during the day…

I visited the midway early on the morning while Baby Got Rack’s meat was smoking.

A few weeks back I was messing with some camera settings and decided it was a perfect time to crank out Page 49 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Page 49 – Take a photograph that shouts.

By a photograph that shouts, it is a picture that is bold in its colors, contrast, and sharpness. I jacked these settings up all the way on my camera and photographed some flowers in the Photography 139 flowerbeds and at my Mom’s house.
