The Selfie Project – Denouement

It is over! The Selfie Project is over! But we should have a couple last looks at all that was “accomplished”!

Here are my favorite pictures from December:

I also made a video featuring all 367 images. You can watch it below:

Of course, if you subscribe to this blog via email or RSS Feed, you will have to physically go to this blog entry to view the video!

It was a good project and while at least Michelle is sad to see it go, it is time to put it to bed. Maybe I’ll bring it back in 2019.

Lost in a Roman Wilderness of Pain

Here are some photos from the last 2 Iowa State football games I attended. Both ended in controversial defeats for Iowa State. The game against Oklahoma State, the bad call took the tying touchdown away from Iowa State, but I can understand why the bad call was made.

There were too many bad calls made in the Kansas State game to even talk about. At least these terrible calls didn’t keep Iowa State from going bowling!

These pictures taken with a point & shoot.

A week from now me, Jesse, and Russell should be well on our way to Memphis for one last Cyclone football game! I’m already excited for next season!

The main takeaway from this collection of photos to me is that I hope I still have a full resolution photo of the Rambo Platoon somewhere. RAMBO is a horrible movie, but that was a great night!

The quarter picture was from the computer mine. The statue is Jack Trice, but of course, you already knew that. Those light up Iowa State athletes used to be in front of the Jacobson Building, but they took them down a few years back.

By adding these images to the Photography 139 SmugMug Gallery, I was able to restore the following past entries of THE ARTIST’S NOTEBOOK:

I’m not exactly sure where next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will land. Might be some Little White Lye Soap. Might be some Angry Brad’s Designs.

All these pictures were taken at the first Ames Jaycees activity I ever participated in. It was called Super Shooters, which was some kind of basketball skills competition. Like 4 kids showed up for it. If you are a person that believes in omens, it should have been an omen to me that joining the Ames Jaycees was a mistake.

It was not one of the top ten biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life, but it was a mistake, nonetheless. But I guess at that time in my life I needed something to get me out of the house and I was looking to “contribute” to my community.

On these Saturdays, there will probably be plenty of blogs about the Jaycees while we cover 2008. I think I spent like 16 months in the Ames Jaycees. My time there ended in a sex scandal. Don’t get excited. It wasn’t my sex scandal. This isn’t Photography 139 After Dark.

I don’t remember all the details, but an older member of the Jaycees was giving the business to a younger member of the Jaycees. Take it easy Alabama. The age difference wasn’t enough to ring your bell.

Why this was anybody’s business, I’m not really sure, but it was considered scandalous because the older Jaycee was married (and kind of gross).

In an effort to stop the gossip the couple in the tryst pulled a classic bit of propaganda developed by the Soviets (and familiar to anybody that pays attention to the talking heads of the current corrupt regime) known as whataboutism. They found a mark and then accused that person of theft.

Their mark was somebody that was in “my” enclave of Jaycees. In my group, I was the person that was by far the least passionate about the Jaycees. I mean, they did some decent things for the community, but mostly they were just a glorified drinking club, that gave out awards. It is pretty well-documented I give no firetrucks about awards.

It is/was (if I ever think about them) my theory that the Jaycees was mostly populated to late-in-life drinkers. They had the quality of enjoying drinking, which is sure, you do you; but they also couldn’t get enough of TALKING about the fact that they were drinking. This is a characteristic I’ve only found in high school and college students (when I was a high school and/or college student) when they first start drinking.

“WooHoo! Look at me! I’m drinking. Do you see me? I’m drinking. I’m such a rebel.”

That theory is neither here nor there though.

To return to the story. The Lovers formally charged The Mark with theft. There was some kind of mock trial. The Mark was given some kind of punishment, but allowed “the honor” of remaining a Jaycee.

At this time, everybody in my little Jaycee clique up and quit. I will remind you that all of these people were desperately passionate about this organization. I was there because streaming Netflix hadn’t been invented yet.

Yet there I was, ultimo hombre.

Since the people that cared about the organization didn’t feel compelled to stick around and fight for that organization’s soul, I wrote my resignation letter and checked out.

I’m sure my letter was eloquent and probably pointed out organizational hypocrisies. Today, if went through the same experience, I would photocopy my hand flipping the bird, sign that, and send it in.

My time with the Jaycees wasn’t a complete waste. I made a few friends, and any time you make a new friend, your time isn’t wasted. I even made a few acquaintances. People I know that if I saw them walking down the street, I would not cross to the other side of the street.

I also took that wasted desire to contribute to my community and devoted it to contributing to my community through my church. Turns out that working for the Kingdom of God is much more rewarding than working for the Kingdom of Keystone Light.

By adding these pictures to the Photography 139 SmugMug Gallery, I was able to restore the following blog entry:

My Saturday

Next Saturday’s walk down Memory Lane will involve Rambo, Boone High School, and Jack Trice. Not necessarily in that order.

Let’s Party

Don’t know that there is anything particularly special in these images from Iowa State’s Spring Game, but another notch in the back log is another notch in the back log.

I never would’ve guessed, sitting in Jack Trice Stadium, on that Saturday afternoon, that this Cyclone team would go on to beat 2 Top 5 teams on the way to ending Iowa State’s bowl drought.

I already got my Liberty Bowl tickets ordered. Jesse, Russell, and I are going to Memphis!

Relationship Goals

I hope all of you had a marvelous Thanksgiving weekend! I had a particularly great Thanksgiving weekend myself.

On Thursday morning I got up and went down to the church (Boone First United Methodist represent!) to take photos of our annual Thanksgiving. This is the second year in a row I’ve photographed the event. From the initial looks, I’d say that we served more than double what we served the previous year.

After hanging with the church family, I went to my Mom’s house for my family Thanksgiving. As usual, it was great. As usual Mom’s cooking was on point. Teresa’s French Silk Pie was delicious as usual. We watched SING and Alexis put up the Christmas tree.

Friday I got up and did some G33 classified business, but it was lots of fun. Even though the cheating was even more rampant than usual.

At noon I went to the Wal-Mart and rang the bell for the Salvation Army. One of my favorite things to do every year. For the people watching aspect alone.

Friday night I went to Boxholm and had a supper prepared by Becca and Bethany. It was kind of a surreal experience because we had the meal in Shorty and Doris’ home. All their stuff is still there, but now their stuff is accented with Tim’s style. Which isn’t bad, but it is weird. However, Bethany and Becca rocked the meal. Turkey and duck?!? Insane!

Saturday morning Dae Hee and I hit the road for Manhattan to see Nate and Laura, plus watch the Iowa State Cyclones battle the Kansas State Wildcats in football. On the way down there we stopped at a Waffle House in St. Joe’s because we were hungry and I love me some Waffle House. However, the Waffle House experience was marred with tragedy. I was mistaken for an Iowa Hawkeye fan by a group of Nebraska fans. It took me awhile to figure out that they had mistaken me for such a low beast as a Hawkeye fan because I was blatantly dressed like a Cyclone fan. It just put a pall on the entire experience. I couldn’t even properly enjoy the road waffle that Waffle House generously gifted us.

The rest of the trip to Manhattan went without incident. Mostly Dae Hee sleeping and me explaining every song of HAMILTON to a sleeping Dae Hee.

We lunched at a place called Bourbon & Baker. It is a small plate restaurant and I would recommend it. I’d highly recommend their chicken and waffles and that isn’t just my love for waffles speaking. #wafflelife

After lunch Nate and Laura dropped us off at Vampire Stadium. Nate scored us great free seats from some old retired professor dude. We sat on the 40 yard line in actual seats. Other than them being in literally the smallest rows in the history of rows and being surrounded by Purple Kansans, it was a great experience. Until the 4th quarter. When all of a sudden it was as if the Vampire had called up Bill Self and asked to borrow his personal refs.

I’m not blaming the loss on the refs. Iowa State certainly aided Purple Kansas with horrible play calling, but I can say with 100% certainty, I’ve NEVER seen a time where the referees threw 3 flags on one team and picked them all up. Not in an entire season. Not in an entire game. Not in an entire half. Not in an entire quarter. Definitely not in a 5 minute period.

What particularly hurt is when Kansas State blatantly interfered with Iowa State’s all-world receiver Allen Lazard. The refs threw the flag, because it was pretty blatant. Then got together. Picked up the flag and then tried to pretend that they were decent human beings, which they obviously are not. If they make the correct call there, the game is over and Iowa State leaves Manhattan with a victory and all is right in the world.

But I think this tweet by Lazard really puts a comedic spin on the deal:

Relationship Goals

What made the loss almost worse is the fact that Purple Kansans are so incredibly nice. At least 15 of them came up to me or Dae Hee to thank us for coming to their stadium. To tell us that we have a great team. It was a great game. In my state of mind at the time, I almost would’ve preferred an obnoxious Hawkeye or Husker or Jayhawk fan.

I’m pissed. Don’t be nice to me.

After the wave of Purple Kansas Nice finally finished washing over us, Nate and Laura picked us up and Road Rage Laura took us to dinner at the Taphouse. Another Manhattan eatery I would recommend. Their Korean Wings are delicious. Their house brewed root beer was good, but not great. Very strangely they served it on ice. Must be a Purple Kansas thing.

Then the final twist of the knife came when I got a snap from somebody that was eating pizza from The Adobe. I’ve been badly hankering for some pizza from The Adobe for quite some time now. I guess that is my own fault for not just going myself.

After dinner I cashed in my chips and called it a night. I was physically and emotionally drained.

Nate got a text in the morning from Bethany that Nora was sick. We decided to skip breakfast and hit the road.

On the way out of town we stopped at Manhattan Hill. 8 AM. The only people there were Cyclone fans. It was universally agreed upon that we were all still pissed. We hopped in the car and headed home. That little Manhattan Hill therapy session definitely helped my mood a bit.

But I really brought you here to share some photos from church’s Thanksgiving meal:

The church server 521 meals on Thanksgiving! What an incredible blessing!

Selfie Project – October

You can tell the year is starting to wind down. I don’t feel I did the best work on THE SELFIE PROJECT in October. It admittedly wasn’t the busiest month of the year for me, but I still had plenty of things go down. I’ll have to try to do better in November. Finish off THE SELFIE PROJECT strong!!

Saturday was a magical day at Jack Trice Stadium. Not only were the tacos at Taco Tailgate great as always. The #25 Iowa State Cyclones defense manhandled #4 TCU.

Since the weather was supposed to be extremely cold and there was a chance of precipitation, I once again brought the Canon point and shoot. Here are a few pictures from the day:

PSA: The University of Kansas has a Football Team

This is a public service announcement that the University of Kansas does indeed have a football team. They aren’t only represented by a basketball program that is under investigation by the FBI for being a front for Adidas. A men’s basketball program that let’s it’s players assault a member of the women’s basketball program and responds by trying to silence her. A men’s basketball program that has a player get arrested every couple of weeks, but yet somehow never gets suspended. A men’s basketball program that is complicit in college rape culture by helping cover up a rape that occurred in their basketball programs virtually private dormitory. A men’s basketball program that recruits classy people like K.J. Lawson who posted on his Snapchat him shouting “f— Tubby” and posted him giving Memphis two middle finger as he transferred from the University of Memphis.

In case you are shamed by the completely out of control Kansas basketball program and you are a Kansas grad, I have good news for you. The University of Kansas also has a football program that you can support. Currently not under investigation by any federal law enforcement agencies!

A couple Saturdays back they came to Jack Trice Stadium to play the Iowa State Cyclones in a football match. Because it was a pouring rain, I didn’t take any good cameras to the game. However, I did take my Canon point & shoot to capture a few photos. Here are a few of those few photos:

The Cyclones bested the Jayhawks on this soggy day 45-0. It wasn’t all bad for Kansas though, they managed to get into triple digit for yardage on the second to last play of the game!

Iowa State followed this win up by going on the road to Lubbock and besting the Red Raiders 31-13, thanks in large part to Marcel Spears 61 yard pick six that saved our bacon. That victory sets up a showdown this Saturday against the #4 Horny Toads of Texas Christian for first place in the Big XII. It might be snowing on Saturday, but if you are in the Ames area, you should head to The Jack to support the feel good story of college football and support the Cyclones. If you make it to the game, drop by G6 for our annual Taco Tailgate. The tacos are on me (well and Jorge and Joe and whomever else contributes to bearing the expenses of Taco Tailgate)!!
