ROAD TRIP saw some of the regulars drop out, but the ones that did participate went all in. But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You just want to see the submissions.

A healthy and diverse collection of submissions. Something to think about. This is the second time a picture of Pete Kostelnick (Boone native, Iowa State Graduate, and World Record Holder) has appeared in a WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE submission. Once when he was running through Boone. Now again when was finishing his world record trek across the United States in New York City. Do you think he will show up again? Yeah, I kind of doubt it too.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 60 - LANDSCAPE
LANDSCAPE!

LANDSCAPE is something I personally sometimes struggle with in my photography. At least I feel that I do. Not to the level where I struggle in my faith that God loves murderers and child molesters and rapists just as much as me. But it is a struggle nonetheless. Did it just get dark in here? I feel like maybe it just got dark in here…

But what is LANDSCAPE?

all the visible features of an area of countryside or land, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal.

That seems like a fair definition. However, for our sake. Feel free to consider cityscapes or waterscapes. I know a guy that LOVES cityscapes. He works in a booming metropolis. He gets infinite PTO and he doesn’t allow his underlings to listen to Bachman Turner Overdrive. Maybe he will finally throw his hat into the ring with a lovely cityscape taken on his lunch break. We’ll see.

As always… feel free to interpret the theme however, you see fit.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very open landscapey Monday.

Old Salvation Army Building Wall Phase #2 Alpha

Here are a few more photos of the progress we’ve made with the Old Salvation Army Building Wall. Where the windows are boarded up, we are going to put up murals. The work on those began on Wednesday night in Fellowship Hall.

This one is going to be a cross with paint drippings behind it.

Some of the ideas.

Working on tracing hands for a heart-hand thing.

More of the same.

Bonus picture of Sarah G. leading Devotions/Worship.

Hoping to make significantly more progress on a couple of them this Wednesday night!

Tenderloin Appreciation Society – Nick’s

Last week’s The Iowa Pork Producers announcer their annual winner for the best tenderloin in the state of Iowa. Unfortunately, they always get it wrong. Wrong!

I can point to the year The Lucky Pig won. A disaster of a tenderloin. Or even worse is the year that Gramma’s Ktichen in Walcott won. I wouldn’t wish that tenderloin on my worst enemy.

Yet somehow the tenderloin at Cole’s in Slater keeps getting ignored.

It was with the soft bigotry of lowered expectation that Scottie D. and I hopped into his truck and headed towards Army Post Road to Nick’s this year’s winner.

Here are a few pictures:

But what is the verdict?

We were blown away! For once, the Pork Producers got it right. The tenderloin is a good thickness. The breading had a good flavor. The bun to meat ratio was right on. The bun was toasted. The waiter (Tyler) that served us was passionate about the product. The only things I would take points away for are really minor things. The bun could’ve been toasted a little more. That being said, the bun was excellent and comes from the South Union Bakery. The only other thing is that it could come with more onions. But these are both things that can be remedied in the ordering process. The more you know.

Bonus

They also served some of the best onion rings I’ve ever had. I’d put them right in the same league as Dublin Bay’s Black and Tan Onion Rings and Jethro’s Buttermilk Soaked Onion Rings.

So where does it rank?

This is where it gets really hard. It definitely belongs in the pantheon.

Once you are talking about this level of greatness it really is getting overly picky. Cause my favorite can change from week to week. For now, I will rank it second.

1. Cole’s – Slater
2. Nick’s – Des Moines
3. Legal Limit – Boone
4. Country House – Colo
5. Darrell’s Place – Hamlin

I’ll probably be heading back sometime soon. I can save you a seat in the Camry if you want. Book early. Tickets sell fast.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 58 – POP ART

I wasn’t sure how POP ART would go over as a WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme as it is a little bit harder to wrap one’s mind around than the typical theme. However, there was still good participation. I love it!

Although I good stand here and talk all tommyrot about participation, you just want to see the submissions. Here they are:

WEEK 59 - ROAD TRIP
ROAD TRIP!

We did this theme not that long ago, so it should be fairly fresh in the old memory banks. A picture of anything that might be a part of a road trip. My personal favorite road trip pictures are the super kitschy ones where your posse takes their picture in front of some landmark. That’s just what I enjoy. It isn’t like the photography I enjoy had me recently compared to a serial killer or something… By people who I’m sure are experts in the field… But I digress. All sorts of things would qualify. Pictures of an open road. Pictures of a car. Of a map. Of some place you went on a road trip. A ROAD TRIP could be solo. It could be with 5 friends. It could be a trip across the country. It could be a trip to the store. You’ll figure it out. BUT I WILL REMIND ME YOU OF RULE #1! Just because you took a great ROAD TRIP last weekend… doesn’t help you at all this week.

As always, feel free to define the theme how you see fit.

Beans

I’ve fallen way behind due to internet issues, some sickness, lots of energy spend on some Youth Group stuff, lots of energy spent on Methodist Men stuff, tenderloining, birthday celebrations, and some general laziness.

I’ll try to catch up today and maybe tomorrow. This “Saturday’s” folder is Beans:

These pictures are of soy nuts. Shannon sub-contracted me to do some commercial photography for a soy nut company. I’m not even sure if that company is still in business. Not everybody has the staying power of a Photography 139 or a Little White Lye Soap. Sad.

Arbo Daisy

This is a picture I took of some daisies way back when I was on vacation. Which was way back in early July. Some of us don’t get infinite PTO. You know who I’m talking about:

Daisy from the Iowa Arboretum

If you are the type that likes daisies, good news, probably more in the backlog coming your way soon.

Old Salvation Army Building Wall Phase #1

Last Wednesday before Youth Group, a hearty clan of painters painted the south wall of the old Salvation Army Building. This phase is just to make it less of an eyesore. Phase 2 will involve painting murals where the boarded up windows are. Well, it is one of the phases.

This group consisted of a lot of Sharps, Pastor Doug, Pete Nelson, and I helped do some of the finishing up work at the end. Here are a couple of photos:

The last 2 pictures are from setting up for the Youth Group. I wish I would’ve gotten some pictures of that, but I didn’t. I was in charge of the lesson for the Sr. High Students. The idea of the lesson was to talk about what they liked and didn’t like about previous Mission Trips. This was going to be bookended by the old preacher’s story “The Lonely Ember”. We got the first part of “The Lonely Ember” done and lots of Mission Trip talk done, but we never got quite to the closure part as we ran out of time.

Oh well. At least everybody got to eat s’mores!
