These pictures were taken near my Mom’s alley.
Next Saturday’s folder will involve a southern Boone County road trip I took back in 2007.
I had a request that there be multiple posts about the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme from somebody this week because they find it difficult to keep track of the weekly theme.
I told this person that Photography 139 isn’t a nanny state and that to do such runs contrary to Photography 139’s secondary Mission Statement. The one you don’t find on the ABOUT page of the Photography 139 website.
The Photography 139 Secondary Mission Statement:
We do not train to be merciful here. Mercy is for the weak. Here, in the streets, in competition: A man confronts you, he is the enemy. An enemy deserves no mercy. STRIKE FIRST. STRIKE HARD. NO MERCY SIR!
It is one of many Photography 139 Secondary Mission Statements.
However, being a magnanimous leader, I have consented to this request. At 4 PM on Fridays, I will post a blog reminding everybody of this week’s theme. I figure most people take their photo during the weekend and nobody should have to work later than 4 PM on a Friday. We weren’t meant to live like that.
Reminder. This week’s theme:
This reminder will replace the Monday morning text message I send to frequent contributors. The People’s President is magnanimous, but he also doesn’t have all the free time in the world.
I read on Twitter once about a place claiming to be “the most photographed waterfall in Iowa”. Now I don’t know how they document that claim, especially when what they are referring to is actually a spillway, but I suppose water does fall over it.
Either way, this “waterfall” was the end destination for my black & white photo road trip.
Thanks for taking the time to help me mock this pathetic collection of losers!
Happy Valentine’s Day from Photography 139!
As this is a romantic holiday, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes from my favorite romantic movie of all time (500) DAYS OF SUMMER:
Tom works for a greeting card company.
Tom: Yeah, uh, this is… And Rhoda, no disrespect, but um, this is total sh!t.
McKenzie: Tom!
Tom: “Go for it” “You can do it”? That’s not inspirational, that’s suicidal. If pickles goes for it right there, that’s a dead cat. These are lies. We’re liars. Think about it. Why do people buy these things? It’s not ’cause they wanna say how they feel. People buy cards ’cause they can’t say how they feel or they’re afraid too. We provide the service that lets them off the hook. You know what? I say to hell with it. Let’s level with America. At least let them speak for themselves! Right? I mean, look! What-What is this? What does it say? “Congratulations on your new baby.” Right? How ’bout, “Congratulations on your new baby. Guess that’s it for hanging out. Nice knowing you.”
Vance: Sit down, Hansen.
Tom: How bout this one, with all the pretty hearts on the front? I think I know where this ones going. Yep! “Happy Valentines Day, sweetheart. I love you.” That sweet? Ain’t love grand? This is exactly what I’m talking about. What does that even mean, “love”? Do you know? Do you? Anybody?
McKenzie: Tom…
Tom: If somebody gave me this card, Mr. Vance, I would eat it. It’s these cards, and the movies and the pop songs, they’re to blame for all the lies and the heartache, everything. We’re responsible. *I’m responsible.* I think we do a bad thing here. People should be able to say how they feel, how they really feel, not you know, some words that some stranger put in their mouths. Words like “love”… that don’t mean anything. Sorry, I’m sorry. I, uh… I quit. I’m… There’s enough bullsh!t in the world without my help.
Think I’m going to watch that movie right now!
A great week of participation, which has me all amped up, since BLACK & WHITE is my favorite theme.
But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You want to see the submissions. Here they be:
One of the best weeks of submissions to date!
But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:
I don’t feel like I need to define MUSIC. If you don’t have any MUSIC in your life, I feel bad for you. Really, really, really, really bad for you. You should get out there and get some music in you. Whether it is seeing a local band at a local dive, visiting a local music store, cracking out your old instrument from your high school days, cracking out your old vinyls, screen capturing a playlist on your phone, photographing that musician friend, or even just cracking out some sheet music. The possibilities are endless!
As always, feel liberated to define the theme as you see fit!
A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION
1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.
2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.
That is it, them’s the rules.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION
Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.
Want your own Photography 139 email subscription? Call, email, or text me and I’ll get you the hook up.
That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a verymusical Monday!
I still have barely went through all the pictures I took at the Women’s March down in Des Moines. But this is another one of my favorites:
Plenty more of these to come in the coming weeks!

Last Sunday Mom, Teresa, Vi, and I loaded up into the car and traveled to the great north to visit Andrea, Josh, Wesley, and Grace. It was a great time, but perhaps the highlight was going up into Andrea’s church’s dome with Josh.
Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the trip:

I can’t wait to go back! Grace and I have big plans for hitting up Old Boston’s!
