I got off work early on a Friday and headed to Ledges. I thought that I had insect repellent in my trunk, but I was wrong. I forged on anyways. I got absolutely lit up by mosquitoes. It was not a fun experience. Then when I came out of the remote woods (I was off trail hiking) I was greeted by 3 kids from the Youth Group. Their picture was to show me their excitement for the mission trip. It is getting really close now!

A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 15

Last Saturday while I was leaving the Cultural Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, I came across what I considered a perfect example of Page 15 for THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT.

This time there was no photo assistant, just a rocking soundtrack coming from a speaker somewhere on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. “We built this city. We built this city on rock’n’roll!!!”

Only one photo can go in the Photo Journal, but I also liked these:

I’m not sure what page in the THE PHOTO JOURNAL is next for me. The one that seems to be calling me next is Page 10.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 92 – NATURE

NATURE really sparked something in a lot of people. I think this is the largest group of submissions we’ve had in weeks! Brooke even rejoined us! Welcome back Brooke!

But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You want to see the submission for NATURE:

What a great week of submission!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 93 - TIME
TIME!

As it so happens, I’m actually short of TIME to write a description of TIME right now. So the short, short version is that the idea of TIME is to capture a moment or moments in TIME. This should be done with either an extremely short or a long exposure. However, there are obviously other ways to define TIME. Some people think that TIME doesn’t even exist. Feel free to use any definition of TIME that works for you.

Good luck and I can’t wait to see your interpretations of TIME!

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.

Want your own Photography 139 email subscription? Call, email, or text me and I’ll get you the hook up.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 GALLERY DIVISION

Sometimes people send me descriptions of their photos. I’ve never done anything with that information in the past. However, if you send me a description in the future, I will add it to your image in the Weekly Photo Challenge Gallery that houses all the submissions.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 MISSION DIVISION

For those of you that are observant of my schedule, I will be in Saint Paul on a mission trip next Monday. That doesn’t change the schedule of events. The deadline for inclusion of your submission will still be 11 AM on Monday. At 12:01, next week’s theme will be revealed. I won’t have much access to my email until I return to the Cyclone State on Friday, therefore I won’t reveal the submission until I return or until I feel that I have adequately recovered physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

**************************************

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very timely Monday or whenever I release the submissions!

4th Annual Pie Auction

A few Sundays back was the Methodist Men’s 4th Annual Pie Auction. All the money raised wen to support youth activities in the church. Teresa took the majority of these pictures as I was working the event:

The Pie Auction was a rousing success and a plethora of moola was raised! A good start on fundraising for next year’s mission trip or painting projects or whatever.

On Sunday, I redid Page 24 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT. While I already did this page with Shannon, I decided to redo it because of the lighting conditions for that photo shoot weren’t ideal and it made those pictures very noisy.

This time I used Naima as the model and Jesse was a photo assistant.

Page 24 is “Throw something at your subject and capture their reaction with a fast shutter speed.”

That picture is the one that will go in the book, but I thought you might also enjoy some of the rejects:
