The Town Sign Project Vol. 8

A couple weeks back I went to Kansas City to see the Foo Fighters with Nate.

On the way back to Iowa I meandered up 169 mostly and took a few more pictures for THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT.

Here are some photos:

Shannon City, Iowa didn’t have a town sign. Shannon City, Iowa is one of the scariest towns I’ve ever visited. It gives Beaver a run for its money for being scary.

I was a little disappointed in Tingley, Iowa’s sign. I thought with an awesome town name like Tingley, they would come out with something better than they did.

I already have a Winterset sign, but I like this one much better than the one from a previous collection.

The Lorimor sign is my favorite from this collection.

I’ll get out and take some pictures for this project again in the near future!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 164 - WILD ANIMAL
WILD ANIMAL

I should point out that I was pretty surprised to walk out my back door yesterday and see a bald eagle swooping around overhead. I’ve never seen one in my neighborhood.

WILD ANIMAL! What a great theme! But what is a WILD ANIMAL picture? It is a picture of an animal that is not domesticated. Not a pet. Not a farm animal. There is more than one definition for WILD ANIMAL. Therefore…

I look forward to seeing your interpretations!

Most likely, I will be out of state next Monday. So, look for next week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE post to be posted on Tuesday.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

+++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very wild Monday.

08-03-08

The pictures in the folder 08-03-08 is from the third day of my vacation in Kentucky with Teresa.

On that day, we went to a Southern Baptist Church service. We spent 3 hours at the church service, before we snuck out the back. I’m not sure how much long it went on. There were some positives about the church service. The music was amazing. The people were friendly. The story of the church was fascinating. It was started by a former prisoner. When he got out of prison he started the church with a mission of helping other convicts of surviving outside of prison and not falling back into the actions that got them in prison the first time.

The negative was it was the only time I’ve heard hate preached from a pulpit. At least hate on a certain group of people. The weird part of it was the pastor wasn’t even talking about the group of people he hated. He just threw a couple of bombs at them for no apparent reason. It was kind of sad.

After the 3+ hour church service, we also went to the lake and watch birds. Then we went to Ernie’s pond and fed his catfish.

Here are some pictures from the day:

By adding these pictures to the Photography 139 Gallery, I was able to restore the following historic “An Artist’s Notebook” entry to its original glory:

KENTUCKY – DAY 3

Next week’s walk down memory lane will involve driving home from Kentucky and a look at some Abraham Lincoln history!

A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 79

I took Page 78 of the PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT on the morning of the Barbecue Contest of the Iowa State Fair.

I came back to the Iowa State Fair on the last day of the fair to take the companion picture.

Page 78 was to “Photograph a place that’s nondescript during the day…”

Only one picture can be physically adhered into the physical copy of THE PHOTO JOURNAL, but I did take several other pictures that night.

This is you weekly reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is COLORFUL.

COLORFUL

A COLORFUL picture is a picture of anything that is COLORFUL.

Happy photo harvesting!

Dog Party!!

Near the end of August, the Boone City Pool had their annual Dog Pool Party. I can’t remember if it is a fundraiser for the Boone Area Humane Society or the Canine Corral, but it is a fundraiser for somebody.

I like to take Naima to this event even though she hates it. Naima doesn’t swim. Period.

She will walk around the pool where she can touch the bottom, but she won’t go in any pool where she has to swim.

Naima will stomp around the wading pool and after a few minutes, she is ready to go. Last year, she did just leave on her own. She left the pool and walked right out the exit. She’d had enough.

Here are a few pictures from the dog pool party:

This was by far the busiest dog pool party I can remember. There was dogs everywhere. I don’t know that I’ll make Naima go again next year. I think she has built all the character that she is ever going to build.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 162 – COLLECTIBLE

There was a bit of drop in my collection of WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE submission this week. The collection of COLLECTIBLE isn’t too large.

COLORFUL! What a great theme! But what is a COLORFUL picture? A COLORFUL picture is any picture of an item that is saturated with COLORFUL. You know, like autumn leaves in an Iowa river valley. Of course, there is more than one definition of COLORFUL.

As always, I look forward to seeing your interpretations!
