Naima & Tempe

Last weekend I went down to Topeka with Becca and Bethany to see Nate and Laura’s triplets.

Bethany left her dog Tempe with Naima for the weekend. Part of my dog-sitting crew, Jay and Willy, got quite the kick out of Naima and Tempe’s antics. This reminded me that I hadn’t published the pictures of Naima and Tempe from when Tempe stayed with me in May.

I shall correct that now:

When we got back to Boone, Bethany kinda called me out about how I talk about bringing back the birthday party every year and then I don’t do it. Therefore, 2019 might be the year to actually do something. Maybe I just find these days that I enjoy the company of animals and things more than people these days. So I guess if I bring back the party next year, I have decided that I like people again. Possibly.

The Town Sign Project Vol. 8 Auxiliary

This is a collection of pictures I took when I was tooling around Highway 169 taking pictures for THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT.

If you recall, some of the towns I went through were Lamoni, Ellston, Tingley, Shannon City, Arispe, Afton, Lorimor, and Winterset.

I also went through a town called Kellerton, but I couldn’t find a sign that said, “Welcome to Kellerton!” So it wasn’t included in THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT.

I have an attraction to the decrepit, the dillapidated, the abandoned. This collection might make some of these towns look worse than they are. Except Shannon City. I couldn’t make that town look worse than it is.

I mostly present this picture because next Monday, this car will be paid off. It is thanking me by needing new rear brakes.

There is a town sign for Beaconsfield in Kellerton, but not for Kellerton.

I didn’t actually make it to Beaconsfield, but this isn’t the first town to try to claim ownership of Peggy Whitson.

I actually thought I was going to get stuck on a road in Shannon City, no way I was tempting this road.

I don’t have any more THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT photos in the hopper. I probably will need to get some of those done when I get my brakes done. I will get my brakes done before driving down to Dallas to watch Iowa State play in the Big 12 Championship Game. Hopefully.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 164 – WILD ANIMAL

WILD ANIMAL is a tough theme for this time of year. Not really, but it could be. At least it ended up being a tough theme as there were less than a handful of submissions.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation. You came to see the WILD ANIMAL submissions:

WEEK 164 - WILD ANIMAL - CARLA STENSLAND

WEEK 164 - WILD ANIMAL - CARLA STENSLAND

WEEK 164 - KIM BARKER - WILD ANIMAL

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 165 - LANDSCAPE
LANDSCAPE

LANDSCAPE! What a great theme! But what is a LANDSCAPE photo? Here is one definition:

the depiction of landscapes in art – natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view – with its elements arranged into a coherent composition.

As always, I look forward to your interpretations.

Next week, we’ll back to a Monday release for the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

+++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very landscape Monday.

Once again, as soon as I touched my camera, Iowa State had a punt blocked for a touchdown. So most of these pictures are from our annual Taco Tailgate.

Iowa State is 4-0* during Taco Tailgate.

It was a huge win for the Cyclones! If they win out, they have a real good chance to play in the Big 12 Championship Game!

But first things first! Need to beat Baylor at home next week. They have really improved since last year and are coming off a big win over Oklahoma State.

*We don’t talk about the Texas game and the 2 Texas fumbles that the refs gave back to Texas because… Texas.

08-04-08

The folder 08-04-08 is filled with images of Teresa and I’s trip home from Kentucky.

On the way back we stopped in Springfield, Illinois. Springfield is noted for being home of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. It also home of the Springfield Old Capitol Building where both Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama made their announcements that they were running for President.

Abraham Lincoln, the man who said:

“How many legs does a dog have if you call his tail a leg? Four. Saying that a tail is a leg doesn’t make it a leg.”

and

“Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”

and

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

and

“When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.”

and

“Stand with anybody that stands right, stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.”

and

“My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”

Barack Obama, the man who said:

“The cynics may be the loudest voices – but I promise you, they will accomplish the least.”

and

“Where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes We Can.”

and

“We, the People, recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which only asks what’s in it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense.”

It is startling how far the level of political discourse has fallen in just a couple of years. Hopefully in 2020, we will elect somebody to the White House that’s command of the English language is above that of a 4th grader. (Not hyperbole – Studies show that speeches given by the current President hover between a 3rd grade to 7th grade reading level.)

It would also be nice if that person wasn’t a homophobic, a misogynistic, sexist, racist, jingoistic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, xenophobe. But I don’t want to get too greedy here. But if I were getting greedy, I would want a President that wasn’t bought and sold by corporate interests. A president that stood up to despotic leaders like Putin, Jong-un, and Bin Salman, instead of carrying water for them. If I was getting super greedy, I would want a President that wasn’t accused of sexually assaulting 22 different women. I know. That is totally a case of he said, she said (Jessica Leeds), she said (Ivana Trump), she said (Kristin Anderson), she said (Jill Harth), she said (Lisa Boyne), she said (Mariah Billado), she said (Victoria Hughes), she said (Temple Taggart), she said (Cathy Heller), she said (Karena Virginia), she said (Tasha Dixon), she said (Bridget Sullivan), she said (Melinda McGillivray), she said (Natasha Stoynoff), she said (Jennifer Murphy), she said (Juliet Huddy), she said (Rachel Crooks), she said (Samantha Holvey), she said (Ninni Laaksonen), she said (Jessica Drake), she said (Summer Zervos), she said (Cassandra Searles).

We also visited Lincoln’s Tomb. If you are ever in the Springfield area, I definitely recommend visiting both. I wish we would have had more time to visit more Lincoln exhibits in the area!

By adding these pictures to the Photography 139 Gallery, I was able to restore the following historic “An Artist’s Notebook” entry to its original glory:

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will probably involve Little White Lye Soap. All of you have been stocking up on Little White Lye Soap, haven’t you?

Iowa State 30 #6 West Virginia 14

You may recall that I am not superstitious, but I am a littlestitious when it comes to sports. Every time I touch my camera at an Iowa State football game, things go bad for Iowa State. Therefore, I don’t have many pictures from Iowa State’s monumental victory over #6 West Virginia.

Here are a few of the pictures that I have:

A couple of quick observations.

#!. Those black uniforms were sick! I can’t wait until they crack them out again. I’d like to see them with some kind of alternate helmet at some point. I know that lots of old people don’t understand the black uniforms. That doesn’t matter. Those uniforms aren’t for them. They are for the players and for recruits. The players and recruits love them! That is all that matters. Period. This is one of the things that Matt Campbell understands that previous Iowa State coaching staffs haven’t. It is one of the reasons why every year he puts together a new best class in Iowa State history. He is truly building something special at Iowa State. I can’t wait to see what kind of special uniforms they crack out next season. The one thing they haven’t really done yet is an alternate helmet design, besides the bugle helmet last year. I’m on record as hating Iowa State’s I-State logo. Therefore I didn’t hate the bugle as much as most people did last year. However, an alternate helmet that brought back Cy would be amazing. But what I would really love to see is a helmet that brings back the 80s cyclone design.

Click on the link below to see an Iowa State fan designed logo that I would love to see and I would buy ALL the merch for:

#2. Iowa State plays Kansas today. Kansas is wearing alternate uniforms that honor the military. So alternate uniform haters can get their hate game going today at 11 AM I wish I was able to get down there for that game, but instead I’ve decided to go see my new niece and nephews. If you haven’t heard, Nate and Laura gave birth (well, mostly Laura, but Nate helped) to a healthy set of triplets a couple weeks ago. I’m heading down to meet them with Bethany, Becca, and Jim today. Therefore, stay by your phones for baby pictures!

#3. If I were the type of person that used profanity on my blog (besides when I’m quoting somebody) I would drop an F bomb right here. It would be directed towards West Virginia head coach and noted cry baby Dana Holgorsen. He was less than a class act after Iowa State stomped his Mountaineers like maggots. He gave Iowa State no credit for dismantling his team and ending his quarterback’s Heisman trophy dreams. Then he went into full cry baby mode because Iowa State fans stormed the field. I’ve been apart of probably 10 or so field storms at Jack Trice Stadium over the years. This was the most peaceful one I’ve ever seen. Holgorsen cried about it and the Big XII fined Iowa State $25,000 dollars to placate his ego. Last week Kansas fans stormed the field after beating TCU and Oklahoma State fans stormed the field after beating Texas. Neither university was fined because TCU and Texas both have coaches that are fully functioning adults. Instead of a large man-baby. So yeah, Dana Holgorsen can go… well you can use your imagination.

Iowa State plays at Kansas at 11 AM this morning. Go Cyclones!!!

I currently enter 3 photo “contests” a year. The Boone County Fair, The Iowa State Fair, and Pufferbilly Days. After the contests are over, a bag up the photos I entered and put them in a trunk.

While I was putting the Iowa State Fair entries in the trunk I decided it would be a good time to take Page 47 for THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT.

This is the only setup I shot for this page, therefore there aren’t any alternates for this page.

This is your reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is WILD ANIMAL:

WEEK 164 - WILD ANIMAL
WILD ANIMAL

A WILD ANIMAL picture is a picture of an animal that isn’t a pet, or isn’t a farm animal. I would add that isn’t in the zoo either.

REMINDER: I won’t be publishing the submission for WILD ANIMAL until Tuesday.

Happy photo harvesting!
