2009-09-09

The pictures in the folder 2009-09-09 are from two road trips I took back in 2009. One was a trip with my Mom, Grandma, and Teresa to Kalona. Kalona has always been one of my favorite places to visit. It has been too long since I have been there, that is for sure.

The second road trip was one I took with Jay and Jesse to visit Faust up in Mankato. It also has been too long since I have visited Faust. I don’t lack proper motivation. Mankato has a sweet Godzilla statue that I still haven’t seen.

Here are some pictures from those road trips:

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will involve some family photos I did for Jim’s lady friend Pam.

Ash Wednesday Spaghetti Fundraiser

A big thank you to all the people that showed up and supported the Youth Group on Ash Wednesday! This year, it was a huge success! We raised more than double the money that we raised on last year’s Spaghetti Fundraiser!

Here are some pictures from the event:

Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it on Wednesday. There will be at least one more, possibly 2 more fundraisers for the mission trip to Indianapolis in the next couple of months!

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is FASHION:

FASHION

Remember a FASHION photo is any photo where you get an look at the clothing that the people are wearing.

Happy photo harvesting!

Rodan139 – Ledges

On Sunday I took Rodan139 out for its first flight of 2020. It was a pretty quick trip. Mostly just up and down. Rodan139 hadn’t taken to the skies since December and I just wanted to knock the cobwebs off.

Plus I had a limited amount of time between when church concluded and when I had to leave to get to Hilton to watch the Ashley Joens and the gang take on the Red Raiders.

Here are a few of the pictures I took:

Hopefully we get some warm weather again when I have more time and I can take to the skies again, soon.

Alas, Poor Yorick!

I have to start today’s post off by wishing the happiest of birthdays to Micky! I’m not sure how old Micky is now, but I hope he is at an age where he start to gain a refined taste in pancakes. Micky is one of the best outdoorsman I know, if he ever conquers his fear of snakes, he could even be the best.

Here are some pictures of Micky:

Pie In Your Face!

Happy birthday Micky!!

+++++++

You are probably wondering what Micky would like for his birthday. The answer is pretty obvious, since it IS Ash Wednesday.

Micky would like you to come to the Heart of Boone Youth Fellowship Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser for our trip to Indianapolis!

It is all the spaghetti you can eat and you get to name your own price. Starts at 6. Ends at 7. At the Boone First United Methodist Church in the Fellowship Hall in the basement.

Why is this what Micky wants for his birthday? Because a funded mission trip gets me out of the office for an entire week! A full week he doesn’t have to deal with me at work. I know! I can feel people scrambling for their checkbooks right now!

+++++++

Since Micky is a truly great outdoorsman, I think the type of pictures he would like to peer at on his birthday are from when the family stopped at Jester Park after post-worship lunch some Sunday in August.

There Are Moments

Back in July I stumbled around my backyard and took some pictures of my numerous lilies, hollyhocks, and gazanias. I was playing around with extension tubes. It looks like I will have to purchase a set of extension tubes for the New Hotness at some point, but that will be a couple of months away. Perhaps extension tubes will be my birthday present to myself this year.

Have a look at these flower pictures:

WPC – WEEK 232 – OLD

OLD was not the most popular WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme, but we still managed to have double digit submission for the 21st straight week with a certain amount of ease!

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You came to see the submissions:

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 233 - FASHION
FASHION

FASHION! What a great theme! But what is a FASHION photo? It doesn’t have to be a high FASHION photo. You don’t need to go to a FASHION show. You don’t need to find somebody that is a fancy dresser. All a FASHION photo needs to be is a picture that shows what somebody is wearing. Probably best to look for somebody that is dressed at least interesting. You can ask them to make their best FASHION model pose, but it isn’t necessary.

I look forward to seeing your interpretations!

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date.

OR

I now allow people to text me their submissions. In the past, I had made exceptions for a couple people that aren’t real computer savvy, even though it was an inconvenience for me and required at least 3 extra steps for me. I am now lifting that embargo because I have a streamline way of uploading photos. I’m not giving out my phone number, but if you have it, you can text me.

It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

+++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very fashionable Monday!

Fly Iowa

Back in August, Fly Iowa came to Boone. It was the first time Fly Iowa had been in Boone since the 1990s, I believe.

I had never been to an airshow before, so I didn’t really know what to expect, other than wall to wall blasting of Kenny Loggins classic “Danger Zone” on a constant loop.

And that was my biggest disappointment, not only wasn’t “Danger Zone” played on a constant loop. They didn’t play it one time! Complete garbage.

Despite that fact, I did find it entertaining and a good use of an afternoon. In fact, I took over 1,0000 pictures. That would be over 40 rolls of film in the old days. So I hope you like airplane photos, because there are going to be at least 10 of these posts scattered across the next several weeks!

2009-09-02 & 2009-09-04

The pictures in the folders 2009-09-02 and 2009-09-04 are from two separate but nearly equally great events.

A couple of the pictures are from Alligator Shirt Day. A holiday that I invented back in 2009, but then forgot to honor on a yearly basis. You can bet dollars to donuts that on the 2021 Photography 139 Calendar, you will find Alligator Shirt Day in it. Just one of the changes you will see in the 2021 calendar as I will make it an even more personal project, since I don’t sell them any longer.

The other event is the Iowa State football game against North Dakota State. Back then, I didn’t realize that North Dakota State had one of the most annoying fanbases in the world. A pretty big accomplishment for a nothing university in a town that nobody would’ve heard of if the Cohen brothers didn’t name a movie after the town and then set the movie in Minnesota.

Here are some pictures:

The New Hotness

I recently purchased a new camera. I don’t want to go into the details about what I am calling an “adult decision” at this time because when I open up on the details I’ve why I bought what I bought and the intricacies of the new camera and what it means for the future of my photography, it it going to take a bit of time. Most of you won’t want to read it. Heck, all of you might not want to read it. Some of you have already been bored with hearing about it already.

I received the new hotness on Wednesday and I just want to share some of the pictures I took on its first flight. Some are pictures I took of Naima in the backyard. Others are pictures I took at Youth Group.

If you are wondering what the Youth Group was doing, I had them make Valentine’s based on their understanding of God’s love. If you ever want to see these cards in person, they are on display in the Youth Group Room window that faces 7th Street.

I’m wondering how many of you are going to show up on Wednesday to support these amazing kids!

This is your reminder that the theme for this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE is OLD:

WEEK 232 - OLD
OLD

An OLD picture is of something or somebody that you consider OLD. Be careful telling somebody your taking their picture because they are OLD. Some people don’t take kindly to some young whippersnapper calling them old. Unless you are taking a picture of me. I fully acknowledge that I’m old AF*.

Happy photo harvesting!

*AF means autofocus, right?

Birthday Road Trip – Pixel 2 Pics

This is the last collection of pictures from my Birthday Road Trip. This collection is the collection of cruddy cell phone pictures I took with the trusty Pixel 2. A phone that is almost paid for, so it will surely die very soon.

We lunched at Mabe’s Pizza. It was okay, but certainly wasn’t great. Somebody with a less refined pizza palette probably would have been bonkers for it though.

Now I should start planning in earnest for this year’s birthday road trip. Less than 3 months to go!
