The Howards: 2016 – Chapter 1

By the time this gets published, I’ll probably be making the trudge up Expo Hill towards the Cultural Building to pick up my photos from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon.

If you didn’t get a chance to duck into the Cultural Building to check out my photos, that is fine. That is dandy. Here are the 4 pictures I entered. 2 were accepted for display. 2 were not.

2 pictures for display was a solid showing. You never know what the judges will like. I was surprised that Willy’s eye was selected for display. I thought of the 4, it had the worst chance to make it. I guess you never know.

A few statistics from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon:

1018 Photographers Entered
3201 Photographs Entered
Photographers from 20 other states entered
863 Adults Entered
466 of adults who entered have at least one photograph on display
27% of the photos entered were exhibited

I should start planning for next year, but that hasn’t really been my style, yet.

+++++++

Starting on the 3rd to last photo shoot from 2016 to have the 2016 backlog cleared up.

This collection is from the Howard Family Photo Shoot:

Time once again to check in with everybody’s favorite 2018 high school graduate, Saydie!

Here is a quote from Maya Angelou I came across that is good advice for young people getting around to taking on the world:

I encourage you to live with life. Be courageous, adventurous. Give us a tomorrow, more than we deserve.

Despite all the current evidence to the contrary, I still believe in tomorrow and I hope it is a better tomorrow than we currently deserve.

Time again to check in with everybody’s favorite 2018 high school graduate, Saydie!

I came across this quote from Alice Walker for graduates:

Be compassionate to everyone. Don’t just search for whatever it is that annoys and frightens you, see beyond those things to the basic human being. Especially see the child in the man or woman. Even if they are destroying you, allow a moment to see how lost in their own delusion and suffering they are.
-Alice Walker

Alice Walker is famous for writing THE COLOR PURPLE. A line from that book is one of the mandates of this website:

I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.

The tall drink of water posing with Saydie in half the pictures is Kyle. He currently attends UNI. Saydie will also be attending UNI, but I’m told, “not because Kyle goes there”.

We’re about to the halfway point on Saydie pictures now. About.

Congratulations Saydie – Gamma

Time to check back in with my favorite 2018 high school graduate Saydie.

Thought I would start with more of my favorite bits of wisdom given at commencement speech:

Success is like a mountain that keeps growing ahead of you as you hike it… Err in the direction of kindness.
-George Saunders

People should always err in the direction of kindness. Wish I saw more of that in my everyday life.

We’re at the point in the Saydie pictures that we are warmed up. Giving the umpire the signal that we are ready to play ball.
