WEEK 58 - POP ART
POP ART!

POP ART might be a little hard to explain. But it isn’t a difficult concept. Here is a Google definition:

art based on modern popular culture and the mass media, especially as a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values.

You should be looking at logos, magazines, newspapers, comic books, advertising, and labels. Just as a beginning. Andy Warhol (another overrated baby boomer icon) made lots of money by exploiting weak people… I mean by making art out of Campbell’s soup cans and paintings of Marylin Monroe.

A way to look at POP ART it is art that you see every day, but maybe never thought about as art. But a graphic designer did have to come up with the design on that label on the bottle of Pepsi that you are drinking. Put a frame around it and put hang it on a wall. That is all the Pop Artist is trying to say.

I’ll throw in one wrinkle to consider. POP ART is also a style of painting. If you have access to any kind of painting filter, you could consider using it.

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

WEEK 56 - CHILDREN
CHILDREN!

I don’t know that I need to get into a fancy definition of CHILDREN. You know one when you see them. They are little humans. They are here to replace us. Many of you have one or two or more. Nearly everybody has access to a child or two or more. However, don’t feel constrained to hold yourself to think of this as having to take a picture of CHILDREN. There are a million things that show the existence of CHILDREN in our world. From playgrounds to toys to car seats to schools. There are also CHILDREN of all ages. So be creative with the theme and as always, feel free to define it how you see fit.

WEEK 55 - SIGNS
SIGNS!

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign. Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind. Do this. Don’t do that. Can’t you read the sign? There are signs everywhere. Telling us what to do. Telling us what to buy. Telling us what to think. Telling us how to vote. Telling us what to wear. Telling us where to go. Telling us to wash our hands. Some are new. Some are old. Some are filled with buckshot. But signs with words on them are not the only kind of signs out there. Much communication is done through nonverbal signs. Some believe that God give us signs to help us along our life’s journey. As always, feel free to define signs any way you see fit.

Just get out there and find a sign that speaks to you.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

We are pleased to announce that Linda Toot is the latest person to display, taste, class, and sophistication by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. Linda is my aunt on my Dad’s side of the family. While she was raised in Boone/Jordan her life adventure settled her into Easton, Kansas. This makes the 3rd or 4th subscriber (I need to check my records) residing in the Sunflower State. Making the Photography 139 empires presence strong there. If I were to check the heat map, I believe Kansas now ranks 3rd behind Iowa and Minnesota for Photography 139 subscribers. If you see Linda out and about walking the mean streets of Easton, feel free to give her a knowing glance and show her the Super Secret Photography 139 Handshake.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise (thinking of you eastern Iowa), we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a Monday filled with signs!

I Always Credit My Enemy

When I present a bee picture, I always ask for a moment of silence to remember the millions that lost their lives in Houston during that terrible bee attack in the 1970s.

Please observe that moment of silence now.

So then this lady from Jersey says, “You know why New York pizza is the best pizza in the world? It is because of the great water in New Jersey. It is the best water in the world. They ship it into New York to make their pizza. That is why it is so great.”

Then she paused.

“I do like how everything is so cheap here. I saw a thousand dollar Mamiya camera here for $20. I know because I used to be in the photography industry. I called my friends in New York and asked them if any of them wanted me to pick it up for them. They haven’t called me back.”

At this time, I knew why they hadn’t called her back.

Steph said, “Maybe you would want to buy that camera.” to me.

Jersey looked at me and said, “It is manual. You probably couldn’t use it.”

Oh yeah, this is why everybody hates people from New Jersey.

State Fair Flower

Another flower from the Iowa State Fair Discovery Garden. This time from my trip with the old Campus crew.

Discovery Garden Flower

After taking this picture, I sat down at a picnic table with Steph and Kellie eating some kind of fried potato concoction, when a lady from New Jersey sat down with us.

She started out friendly enough. She told us about her daughter who lived with her. How they were trying to make it to all 48 states by the end of the year. But then the signs of being from New Jersey started to come out.

First, innocently enough. She started telling us about how she used to be a ballerina, but some choreographer from ballet studio x was ruining that ballet because his choreographry was so terrible.

Then she moved on to telling us about how some county fair in New Jersey was better than the Iowa State Fair.

Then she started talking about how New York has the best pizza in the world.

Let’s stop there, because let’s be honest, New York Style pizza is the worst style of pizza in the world. There is a reason it is a buck a slice. That floppy mess is best used to feed rats on the subway.

It’s Dollars to Doughnuts!

Here are some general pictures from my recent trips to the Iowa State Fair with Baby Got Rack, Stephanie, Kelly, Yin, Jeff, and the Beavers!

I was going to tell this story about the New Jersey woman I met that was just the worst. Like all people from New Jersey. But at this time I think it is just enough to point out that people from New Jersey are the worst.

If I get motivated, I might leave the story in the COMMENTS section of this here post later.

So without further adieu…

It was a successful Iowa State Fair. Next year, I might unretire and enter the Photo Contest again. Of course, I said that about Pufferbilly Days as well and decided that it just wasn’t for me this year.

ROAD TRIP!

What a perfect excuse for loading up your favorite cooler with a six pack of be… soda… and hit the open road! Of course, maybe your schedule this week doesn’t allow for you to actually hit the open road. That’s no excuse Nancy! A wide assortment of photos can be taken that suggest a road trip. From maps, to your car, to your favorite tunes, to that bag of Funyuns you have to buy or it isn’t an official road trip. Just think about it and record and image that says ROAD TRIP to you. After all, you are free to translate the theme any way you want.

WARNING!!!

Remember that next Monday is Labor Day. While the government, your bank, and even the Computer Mine takes that day off, Photography 139 doesn’t. Plan your submissions accordingly!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody this week showed class, taste or sophistication by signing up for a Photography 139 Email Subscription. I’ll try to do better next week.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be an open road kinda Monday.
