WEEK 13 - FAST - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest

I’ve been down to the Random Theme Generator’s office and asked it to give me a good theme for this week. It handed over the following:

DRY

I think this is a good theme for a week where the weather is getting nicer, but the Earth hasn’t sprung fully to life. Although I my rhubarb has started to grow and I have a little bit of life in some of my flower beds.

Here is a look back at last year’s submissions for DRY:

DRY – 2010

Hopefully DRY trips the shutter release finger trigger of quite a few people for next Monday.

Photo Gallery Websites

I’m sure most of you will consider this to be one of the most boring posts you’ve ever read, but since it symbolizes a ton of work from me and even more work from Vest, it shouldn’t be allowed to pass without acknowledgement.

I have (with the considerable aid of Vest) updated and upgraded my two photo galleries. There were three steps involved in this activity.

First, we updated the Coppermime shell from version 1.4.13 to version 1.5.12. This adds quite the improvement in functionality for me, although you probably won’t see much of a change.

Second, I changed the theme from 2BorNot2B to TwentyTen. You will definitely notice that the galleries have a different look to them.

Third, we integrated the galleries into WordPress pages. This should be the most obvious change to the casual viewer. This makes the galleries more consistent with the rest of the website and makes navigation amongst the galleries and the rest of the pages on the website quite a bit simpler. Plus, it looks quite a bit better. If you have bookmarked the old URLs for the galleries, they still function perfectly. However, you will not be able to get to those URLs through the website.

Thanks to these changes, I’m opening picture commentary in the galleries back to “Guests”, meaning you don’t have to be logged in to leave a comment on a picture. Last time I attempted such a thing I was overwhelmed with SPAM, but I’m hoping the considerable security upgrades and the addition of CAPTCHA will create an influx of commentators, but keep out the SPAMMERS.

I’m also in the process of adding new headers to the website. The header should change when you visit a different page, but at this time I only have two headers, so it is definitely a work in progress.

So, go check out the new revamped galleries and leave a comment or two or three…

Artistic Gallery

Snapshots Gallery

I’m also in the exploratory stages of actually getting my online store open. It looks like it will cost me about 150 bucks to get it going. Now I just have to convince myself that I could make that 150 bucks back by opening such a store. Any thoughts?

RWPE Y2 #12 – Unfocused

There were a fair amount of submissions for UNFOCUSED. So without further adieu…

I’ve been over to visit the the Random Theme Generator to get a sweet new theme for this week. It spit out the following sweetness:

FAST

Here is a look back at last year’s FAST submissions:

2010 – FAST

Good luck capturing some FAST subjects.

HOUSEKEEPING

Information no longer relevant.

RWPE Y2 #11 – Communication

There were a few more submissions for COMMUNICATION. Included in this week’s submissions is 1st time contributor Cathie Raley. I’m very excited to have Cathie aboard and I hope she continues to submit.

This week’s submissions for COMMUNICATION:

WEEK 10 - COMMUNICATION - DAWN KRAUSE
Dawn Krause

Hoping to build on the momentum of this week I skipped down to the Random Theme Generator’s humble abode and asked for a good theme for this week. The Random Theme Generator spit out the following theme…

UNFOCUSED

This theme is a slight tweaking of a theme from last year. Last year this theme was called OUT OF FOCUS. We changed the theme to UNFOCUSED to allow for a broader interpretation. A look back at last year’s submissions:

2010 – OUT OF FOCUS

I hope that there are numerous submissions for next week. After all, almost anybody can take an unfocused picture. The thing to think aobut while you are taking your picture is what does it say about the subject when it isn’t in focus?

As always, there is only one rule for the Random Weekly Photo Experiment:

The picture must be taken the week of the theme.

Email submissions to bennett@photography139.com by noon on Monday.

RWPE Y2 #10 – Still Life

There weren’t many submissions for STILL LIFE, but at least Julie joined us again! Here are the submissions for STILL LIFE:

WEEK 10 - STILL LIFE - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest of Waxen Media

WEEK 10 - STILL LIFE - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEL 10 - STILL LIFE - JULE JOHNSON
Julie Johnson of The Joy Is In The Journey

I went over to talk to the Random Theme Generator and it immediately spit out a theme for this week:

COMMUNICATION

A great and easy subject for me as I am considered one of the world’s foremost masters of communication. I just hope this theme comes as easy for others as it does for me.

A look back at 2010’s submissions for COMMUNICATION:

COMMUNICATION

HOUSEKEEPING

It is March Madness again, that means that it is time once again for the Roundball Oracles annual NCAA tournament pool. I have already sent out quite a few emails with directions on how to join the pool, but if I missed you or haven’t gotten to you yet, drop me an email at bennett@photography139.com and I will get the information to you forthwith.

As always, this isn’t a boy’s club. Women, small children and the elderly are welcome to sit at my feet and be taught lessons by my extensive basketball knowledge and basketball prognostication skills.

As always, the only fee to enter is pride. The only prize given out to the losers is humility. However, I do provide a trophy to the winner. That trophy is going to look nice sitting on my desk this year.

As always, I hope the winner isn’t Mark Wolfram.

Past Champions

2010 – Mark Wolfram
2009 – Mark Wolfram
2008 – Mark Wolfram
2007 – Tim Peterson
2006 – William McAlpine
2005 – William McAlpine

Last year we had a record number of participants. Basketball knowledge is not a prerequisite for participation. Just ask Carrie Baier from last year!

For some reason I felt compelled to buy some filters for the pinhole camera. I’m currently working on another roll of film that I hope to finish off and publish in a couple of weeks.

Next week’s Personal Photo Project of the Week will return to the 9 Emotions Project and will feature Jen and Derrick.

RWPE Y2 #9 – Silhouette

It is a bit disappointing how unpopular SILHOUETTE ended up being. It is perhaps the easiest artistic theme of the bunch. Oh well… here are the submissions for SILHOUETTE.

WEEK 9 - SILHOUETTE - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest of Waxen Media

WEEK 9 - SILHOUETTE - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

I’ve visited the Random Theme Generator and asked it kindly to spit out an inspiration theme for this week. This is what it said to me:

STILL LIFE

A good definition of STILL LIFE photography comes from Wikipedia:

Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition. The still life photographer makes pictures rather than takes them.

2010 STILL LIFE

Hopefully more people have enough still in their life to submit pictures this coming week.

As always, submissions are due to bennett@photography139.com by noon on Monday.

As always there is only one rule: photo must be taken during the week of the theme.

RWPE Y2 #8 – Market

Not many submissions for MARKET. I have to confess that MARKET was one of the themes that was under consideration for termination. In the end we kept it because my MARKET picture from last year might have been my favorite RWPE picture from last year.

Here are this year’s submissions for MARKET:

WEEK 8 - MARKET - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest

WEEK 8 - MARKET - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT

I’ve been down to visit the Random Theme Generator and I asked him for a category that would really spark the creative interest of many, many people. This is what it spat at me:

Silhouette

One of my favorite themes.

A look back at the submissions in 2010:

2010 Silhouette

I hope for many submissions next week as this is one of the easiest artistic themes.

RWPE Y2 #7 – Silence

SILENCE did not keep people from being silent. There were a healthy amount of submissions this week. Here are the submissions for SILENCE:

Mike and I fired up the Random Theme Generator and it fired out a kind of consumerist theme for this week:

MARKET

You can take a look back at last year’s submissions for MARKET by clicking on the link below:

MARKET – 2010

It is a good broad theme that might push the comfort levels of some people. I hope this is another great week for participation!

RWPE Y2 #6 – Go!

I’m guessing that the holiday weekend might have curtailed the normal amount of submissions. Here are the submissions for GO!:
