WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 38 – PERSPECTIVE

This week ended up being something of a rebound week. All the negative emotions that people felt towards EMOTIONS was left behind and they expressed positive emotions towards PERSPECTIVE. Particularly exciting this week is we have a submission from first time contributor Stephanie Kim. Stephanie lives the farthest east and by far the largest city of any other contributors, so I’ll be excited to see her perspective on things in the future!

The submissions for PERSPECTIVE:

WEEK 38 - PERSPECTIVE - STEPHANIE KIM 1
Stephanie Kim 1

WEEK 38 - PERSPECTIVE - STEPHANIE KIM 2

WEEK 38 - PERSPECTIVE - BECKY PERKOVICH

WEEK 38 - PERSPECTIVE - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT

WEEK 38 - PERSPECTIVE - ANGIE DEWAARD

WEEK 39 - PERSPECTIVE - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future!

WEEK 39 - SKY/CLOUDS
SKY/CLOUDS

SKY/CLOUDS! But what does that mean? While your submission probably should include the sky and/or some clouds, don’t feel that the sky or cloud has to be the focus of your composition. That being said, if the sky or cloud isn’t the main feature of your composition, it should add to the emotional impact of your image.

All that noise being said, feel free to interpret the theme in any way that you see fit.

HOUSEKEEPING

MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE RULES DIVISION

Don’t blow by this because you know the rules. There is a slight rule change in there for going forward as my lunch hour at the day job has changed.

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.
2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com> by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report on this front. However, if you are reading these words and don’t have a Photography 139 email subscription. Let a guy know. I’ll get you hooked up!

That’s all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune again next Monday. Hopefully with lots of looks at our flat earth’s sky.

THE CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT TRIVIA QUIZ

QUESTION 11

I was lucky to be accepted and graduate from the most beautiful and prestigious university in the land. What was my major?

ANSWER: Political Science

BONUS

What was my minor?

ANSWER: History

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 37 – EMOTIONS

EMOTIONS was a profoundly unpopular theme. I’m sure destined to hit the cutting room floor if this challenge extends into a second year. Maybe it was the holiday weekend. Maybe people were like feelings? Actually feeling something? No thanks! Back to my mass consumerism, thank you very much*. Either way, Angie was the only person that kept this theme from being a shutout and being the first strike against this challenge.

Here are the submissions for EMOTIONS:

WEEK 37 - EMOTIONS - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEK 37 - EMOTIONS - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard

WEEK 37 - EMOTIONS - BECKY PERKOVICH
Becky Perkovich

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

This week’s theme is…

WEEK 38 - PERSPECTIVE
PERSPECTIVE

Back when I was compiling the list of 52 themes, I thought about breaking PERSPECTIVE into LOW PERSPECTIVE and HIGH PERSPECTIVE, but I thought it would be interesting, given the choice where people would go. The level of a rat or the level of an eagle. Both animals forage through trash for food, but their perspective on the world is totally different.

However, being high or low isn’t the only definition of perspective. As always, feel free to define perspective any way that you want.

HOUSEKEEPING

RULES

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. That’s all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune again next Monday. Hopefully with a lot of new perspectives on the world.

*Just wanted to make sure everybody knows that I’m a minimalist and that I’m super excited about the new movie coming out about my people.

THE CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT TRIVIA QUIZ

QUESTION 7

Quentin Tarantino famously was once quoted as saying: “When I’m getting serious about a girl I show her RIO BRAVO and she better (expletive deleted) like it.” What one of my 3 favorite movies do I use as a test of the quality of the people in my life? They better (expletive deleted) like it!

ANSWER: A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

BONUS

What are my other 2 favorite movies? To earn the point, you must include the year of release.

KING KONG (1933) & PSYCHO (1960)

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 36 – LETTERS AND/OR NUMBERS

It looks like LETTERS AND/OR NUMBERS also wasn’t an extremely popular theme. Might have to put it on the chopping block if this little project continues into a second year. I guess we’ll see.

On the positive though, it was extremely popular with first time submitter Sara Lockner. Hopefully this won’t be the last time a theme rings the creative bell for Sara.

This week’s theme is…

WEEK 37 - EMOTIONS
EMOTIONS!

But what are EMOTIONS! Google defines EMOTION as a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationship with others. So capture somebody displaying an emotion. Even a second hand emotion like love. Or capture a scene that is the result of a emotion. Capture an image that is supposed to incite an emotion. (Although, quite frankly I hope that is what you’re trying to do with every image.) Or as always, define the theme any way that you want.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

I’m pleased to announce that the Persons are the latest people to show their taste, class, and sophistication by grabbing a Photography 139 email subscription. The short scoop on them is that they are the most talented photographers I know and have been family friends for as long as I have memories. If you see them out and about walking the mean streets of Boone, give them a knowing glance and show them the Super Secret Photography 139 handshake.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creeks don’t rise, we will commune again next Monday. Hopefully with a plethora of EMOTIONS pictures!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 35 – GLASS

GLASS did not end up being an extremely popular theme. That being said, there are some solid submissions here. Let’s have a look at the submissions for GLASS.

WEEK 36 - LETTERS AND/OR NUMBERS
LETTERS AND/OR NUMBERS

I don’t think LETTERS AND/OR NUMBERS requires much of an explanation. You are staring at letters right now. However, there are many forms of letters and numbers, so as always… define the theme as you see fit.

It is a good time to review the rules of the RANDOM WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE:

RULES

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. HOUSEKEEPING

THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

I am pleased to announce that in the last week, we have added 4 new email subscribers to the Photography 139 Empire. Jodie Bennett, Corinna (Logan’s lady friend that I never attained a last name for), Jeff Daniel, and Stephanie Kim all showed off their keen intellect and sophistication for signing up for an email subscription to this here blog. I’d normally go into a lengthy description of each person, but since this entry is already getting off the presses over 7 hours late, I’ll just remind you that if you run into these fine folks on the streets of Brooklyn or wherever, feel free to give them the knowing glance and teach them the super secret Photography 139 handshake.

That is all I got, so if the Lord is willing and the creek don’t rise we’ll see you here again next Monday.

Solid submissions across the board! But why live in the past. Let’s look to the future. After all, that is where we will live the balance of our lives.

This week’s theme…

WEEK 35 - GLASS
GLASS!

Those of you with a little bit of elephant in you may be a little like: “Didn’t we just do GLASS?” However, those of you that are more learned will know that more than just windows are made of GLASS. Things like glasses are made of GLASS. The kind you drink out of and the kind you put on your face. (At least they used to be.) Bottles. Also made of glass. (At least they used to be.) Lenses. Made of glass. (At least they used to be.) Lots of wonderful art is made out of GLASS. So go out and explore the wonderful world of GLASS.

HOUSEKEEPING

Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 33 – WINDOWS

A slight dip in submissions this week, but that was to be expected with a bit harder of a theme. It wasn’t too much of a challenger for first time contributor Geri Derner though! Here are the submissions for WINDOWS:

What is this week’s theme? Keep scrolling!

WEEK 34 - PORTRAIT
PORTRAIT!

This is a nice and easy theme. The only person I would expect to struggle with this theme would be a true Lone Wolf. For the sake of this theme, a PORTRAIT would be considered a posed photo of somebody. That somebody could be a person, an animal, or a stuffed animal. Interpret away! As always, I can’t wait to see the submissions.

No HOUSEKEEPING today. I’ll try to do better next week.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 31 – OLD

So I made a rookie mistake and left my camera battery at work over the weekend. Good thing that I had already taken a plethora of pictures of old things on Wednesday.

This week’s submissions for OLD:

WEEK 31 - OLD - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 31 - OLD - SHANNON BARDOLE
Shannon Bardole

WEEK 31 - OLD - BILL WENTWORTH
Bill Wentworth

WEEK 31 - OLD - SARAH KARBER
Sarah Karber

WEEK 31 - OLD - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEK 31 - OLD - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard

A pretty good selection of submissions methinks.

So what is this week’s theme…

WEEK 32 - COUNTRY
COUNTRY!

So what is COUNTRY? When I wrote this theme down and put it on a Post-It note, my basic concept of country was anything that isn’t within a city limits. Anything rural would qualify. However, you can take the theme any way you want it. Want to saunter down to your local honky tonk and grab a picture of a pretend cowboy. That would qualify. Have a cherry collection of old Tom T. Hall 8 tracks? Take a picture of that. If you want to take a picture of a map and say “look, it’s a country!” Do that. Express the theme however you see fit.

No HOUSEKEEPING today. I’ll try to do better next week.

If the Lord’s willing and the creek don’t rise, we’ll see you next Monday. With a sweet collection of COUNTRY pictures, I have no doubts.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 30 – RUINS

I’ve been looking forward to this week’s theme since I wrote it on a green Post-It Note and dropped it in the hat. Jesse Howard, long time Photography 139 supporter and apparent beard lover, entered his first submission. Hopefully it is the beginning of many more.

Let’s look at the submissions for RUINS:

WEEK 30 - RUINS - CARLA STENSLAND 1

WEEK 30 - RUINS - CARLA STENSLAND 2

WEEK 30 - RUINS - KIM BARKER 1
Kim Barker 1

WEEK 30 - RUINS - KIM BARKER 2
Kim Barker 2

Time to look to the future. This week’s theme is…

WEEK 31 - OLD
OLD!

Maybe it is unfortunate that these two themes got drawn back to back, but they are different ya know. While RUINS calls for you to photograph something that is deteriorating. This just calls for you to photograph something that is old. OLD can still be in very good shape. See William MacAlpine.

HOUSEKEEPING

No new email subscribers this week. Maybe next week.

As we are over halfway home, now is a good time to share the remainder of the themes. If this continues into another year, please put ideas for new THEMES in the COMMMENTS section of this here blog.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 29 – SHAPES

SHAPES is definitely one of the harder compositions to think about conceptually. However, there were a few submissions this week.

Here is a look at the submissions for SHAPES:

WEEK 29 - SHAPES - SARAH KARBER
Sarah Karber

WEEK 29 - SHAPES - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard

WEEK 29 - SHAPES - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT

WEEK 29 - SHAPES - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 29 - SHAPES - BILL WENTWORTH
Bill Wentworth

But enough living in the past. What is this week’s theme?

WEEK 30 - RUINS
RUINS!

It is a shame for me that RUINS wasn’t the theme for last week. I spent a pretty awesome weekend in Kansas and that entire state is basically one large ruin. For example, the Theme Release Photo was taken in the Kansas town of Hatfield Green. Pretty much the entire block that house is on was filled with abandoned houses. So mark Hatfield Green on your places to visit. At least if you love old and dilapidated as much as I do!

So what is a ruin?

The physical destruction or disintegration of something or the state of disintegrating or being destroyed.

Go out and take a picture of an old building or house that has been abandoned. Don’t know where one is? Try the entire town of Beaver, Iowa. An old abandoned car would be another prime example. The Iowa Hawkeyes basketball roster. Another good example.

So get off the couch. Grab your camera. Get out there and take a picture of something physically disintegrating. Before you become an example of a ruin.

PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

The Photography 139 Shameless Self-Promotion Division is pleased to announce that Nicole Nickens is that latest person to show class, taste, and sophistication by becoming a Photography 139 email subscriber. If you see Nicole out and about on the mean streets of Boone, feel free to show her the Super-Secret Photography 139 Handshake and give her the knowing glance.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 28 – SILHOUETTE

This week being more of a challenging theme, it was expected that participation might take a dip. However, on the positive side, my nephew Logan became a first time contributor. I’m expecting big things from that guy in the future.

Look below this text…

WEEK 29 - SHAPES
SHAPES!

A quick shout out to the Baier clan for providing the blocks for the Theme Release Image.

So what does that SHAPES mean? You could almost take a picture of anything and submit it and say “that has a shape”, however what you really want to look for is a subject or scene where a shape or shapes are heavy in the composition. A tile floor. A pile of pipes. A brick wall. A bunch of street signs. You get the idea.

However, define the theme any way that you want.

We haven’t went over the rules lately, so here is a quick refresher.

RULES

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week.
2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by noon on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

Once again, no HOUSEKEEPING this week. I’ll try to do better next Monday.
