Glenn Peterson

On Saturday, I attended the Celebration of Life for Glenn Peterson.

Glenn was one of my favorite people and I’m sure most people that got the pleasure to meet Glenn also shared my admiration for him. Seeing and talking to Glenn was a bonus reason to go to church on Sundays. To participate in Methodist Men activities. Glenn was one of the few people who’s opinions on restaurants I respected.

Glenn was the true human embodiment of Luke3:11 to me:

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”

I thought I would share Glenn’s obituary so that you could partially know the great man that Glenn was (and the obituary doesn’t even mention that he made a mean glass of root beer):

Glenn Lionel Peterson, was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on December 5, 1947, the son of Clayton and Phyllis (Wheaton) Peterson. He attended grade school in Fort Dodge and graduated from Perry High School in Perry, Iowa in 1966. He also graduated from DMACC in Ankeny in 1995. In 1968, Glenn enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War and was a member of the Iowa National Guard for 23 years. Glenn was discharged from the Guard in 1999 with the rank of Sergeant First Class. On October 18, 1986, Glenn married Tamara Rose at the Iowa National Guard Chapel in Johnston, Iowa. In earlier years, Glenn worked for Oscar Mayer as an electrician maintenance man, for the Iowa Department of Public Defense at Camp Dodge as a Mechanic, and as a technician for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Boone, NIAPRA Car Club, and the Iowa Street Rods Association. Glenn was a member of the 2017 Boone County Freedom Flight. Glenn enjoyed old cars, O,S, and HO scale trains, fishing and hunting, especially wild boar hunting.

I don’t have many pictures of Glenn, but I thought I would share one.

Looking through some old Methodist Men pictures really made me miss some guys that aren’t with the church any more. Some have passed away and some just moved away, but I really miss Jim Jordan, Bob Impecoven, Jeff Lorimor, Wayne Rouse, and Dick Morrow. Just to name a few.

But time only moves in one direction, so what can you do?

Here is another post from the 2018 backlog. These are mostly pictures of Naima. I think they might have been alternates for the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme the week they were taken. I’m not entirely sure and I’m not up to that level of soul searching and research.

There is still more in the 2018 backlog, but it is getting smaller every day. Well maybe not every day.

There are two sets of pictures from the folder called 2009-07-02. One is from a trip to see the Boone City Band play and ran in to Josh and his progeny Wesley.

The other is a collection of pictures of Frank. I’m not entirely sure why we took the pictures of Frank, but we did.

It seems that this is the first time I’ve published any of these photos.

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will involve the 4th of July.

Eastern Star Christmas Service – 2018

More from the 2018 backlog. After knocking out pictures from the Eastern Star Trick-or-Treat night, put me in the mood to also knock out the pictures from the Christmas service that my church did at the Eastern Star Home last year.

These pictures include at least one person that has since passed away and people that have passed on from our church to a next phase of their life.

I’m starting to get to the end of the 2018 backlog, but some of the collections I have left to tackle are BIG!

Eastern Star Home Trick-Or-Treat – 2018

Once again, knocking out the 2018 backlog. On Monday night I sat through my favorite monthly meeting, the Outreach Committee Meeting. It was while I was sitting at that meeting, trying not to tinker with my phone, that it occurred to me that the Eastern Star Home’s annual trick-or-treat night was coming up soon.

It also occurred to me that I never published pictures from last year’s event. I usually go to the event to photograph people from the church that are there to volunteer and help out.

While I was perusing the pictures, it really hit home how drastically our church has changed in a few short months. But even when things change, things don’t change. If that makes sense.

Eastern Star Home Trick-or-Treat Night - 2018

This year’s trick-or-treat night will be October 22. It lasts from 6-7 PM. If you have a kid that likes candy, they will get lots of candy. If you would just like to volunteer to help out, I can hook you up with that opportunity as well.

In the folder called 04-11-09 is a photographic record of one of the least favorite things my church has done. They used to do this every Good Friday for several years. They would have 3 youths dress up and smear them with fake blood and mud and have them pretend to be crucified.

As you walked out of the church, in silence, after Good Friday Service, you would walk past a bizarre, macabre scene. Frequently music from THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST played softly in the background.

Don’t get me wrong, it was very powerful experience for many people in the congregation. But I always hated it. It always smacked of cheap theatrics to me. A Living Nativity is one thing. A Living Crucifixion, not digging it.

However, that isn’t to say I don’t know a great photo opportunity when I see it. In 2009, Logan was cast as Jesus. Here are some pictures:

By adding these pictures to the Photography 139 Gallery, I was able to restore the following historic “An Artist’s Notebook” entry to its original glory:

Bake the World a Better Place

Today’s post is actually a mixture of the backlog and new pictures.

I never got around to posting pictures from the 2018 Methodist Men Pie Auction. Last Sunday we had the 2019 Methodist Men Pie Auction. The proceeds for both go to support the Youth Group Mission Trip. Between the two pie auctions raised over $3000.

The Methodist Men Pie Auction has been a smashing success every year it has happened and every year I’m nervous it is going to be a big time failure. Hopefully I’m never right.

The 2018 helpers from the Youth Group were MacKenzie Mosher and Anna Olson. The 2019 helpers were Megan Osborn and Hailey Bryant.

A Photo Journal – Page 21

This week I knocked out Page 21 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT. I took one of the rubber dinosaurs I seem to have in every room of the house.

Page 21 – Make something small look big.

While only one picture can be adhered into the physical THE PHOTO JOURNAL, however I took a couple other rubber dinosaur pictures that I like:

WPC – WEEK 193 – BLUE

First things first. Even though Photography 139 doesn’t take days off, it does acknowledge holidays. I hope you have had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend, but also take the time to remember why it is you got a 3 day weekend. To honor the people who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

As is usual when a holiday falls on Monday, participation rates for THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE dip. While this happened again today, the people who did submit for BLUE were very passionate about BLUE.

There were pictures submitted that were taken in Rome, Philadelphia, Saylorville, and even Fraser!

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You came to see the submissions:

GROUP PORTRAIT! What a great theme! But what is a GROUP PORTRAIT? A GROUP PORTRAIT is simply any portrait that features more than one person. It doesn’t have to be a formal posed portrait. A candid portrait works just as well.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

Selfie Project – March

It has been awhile since we checked in with THE SELFIE PROJECT. I figured today was as good of a day as any to check out March before April is over.

I’m not sure I did more interesting things in March than I did in February or January where it felt like I never left the house. I think I’ve continued that in April. I actually even left the state in April!
