If the aliens didn’t accept “God Only Knows” as reason enough to not annihilate the human species, I would offer up this somewhat controversial song as my second attempt to save humanity. Why is this song controversial? Because it revolutionized the way music is recorded AND a lot of musicians in the day dismissed it as a “edit song”. Phil Spector even compared it to PSYCHO and thought that was a valid criticism. No! Don’t compare it to one of the greatest movies ever made! Poor Phil Spector. He should have been put in prison for that AND for murdering Lana Clarkson.
The song is a little over 3 and a half minutes long. It took over 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape to record it. It is impossible to know how many musicians are on the final edit. It cost between $50,000 to $75,000 to produce. That is between $470,000 and $700,000 in current cash.
No matter how much it cost, it is one of the greatest songs of all-time.
