Gelt Drop

I always wanted to see a menorah lighting during Chanukah, so last year I decided to head down to Maccabee’s Kosher Deli in Des Moines to witness. I decided to go down the night that they were doing the gelt drop because, well, I just really wanted to see it.

A “gelt drop” is a Hanukkah tradition where chocolate coins wrapped in gold or silver foil are dropped from a height, often from a firetruck or helicopter, for children to collect. The event is a fun and festive way to celebrate the holiday and engage children in the spirit of Hanukkah, often accompanied by other activities like menorah lightings, latkes, and doughnuts.

Here are the pictures:

It was an interesting experience. But I still need to eat at Maccabee’s Kosher Deli at some point.
