Today is Halloween and while I usually do a candy power rankings on Halloween, I think we all know the truth and it doesn’t change from year to year. Whatchamacallit is the best. Take 5 is second. Snickers, Twix, Peanut M&M’s, Pretzel M&M’s, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups all follow up in some order behind.
This year for Halloween, I’m going to do something similar to what i did for Christmas last year when I watched 25 movies for Christmas. This year I watched 31 horror movies for Halloween. 31 horror movies I’ve never seen before. And I did it for you people!
Let’s dig into it!
THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD. YE BE WARNED!!

- Bennett Synopsis – Rich pricks have to kill their new daughter-in-law by sunrise, or they will all die. They fail miserably. Ends with perhaps the most satisfying last line in horror movie history.

Cobweb (2023) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 58%
- Popcornmeter – 71%
- Bennettmeter – 10%
- Genre – Whiny Little Kid Horror
- Stars – Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, Woody Norman
- IMDB Synopsis – An eight-year-old boy tries to investigate the mysterious knocking sounds that are coming from inside the walls of his house, unveiling a dark secret that his sinister parents have kept hidden from him.
- Bennett Synopsis – World’s dumbest kid is convinced to murder his parents by a voice in the wall. Hijinks ensue.

The Craft: Legacy (2020) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 47%
- Popcornmeter – 24%
- Bennettmeter – 12%
- Genre – Witchcraft Horror
- Stars – Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Aldon, David Duchovny
- IMDB Synopsis – A group of high school students form a coven of witches.
- Bennett Synopsis – A nearly criminal waste of Michelle Monaghan. No forget that noise. A criminal waste of MIchelle Monaghan!

Tarot (2024) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 17%
- Crowdmeter – 56%
- Bennettmeter – 15%
- Genre – Voodoo Horror
- Stars – Harriet Slater, Aidan Bradley, Avantika, Jacob Batalon
- IMDB Synopsis – When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings, they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death.
- Bennett Synopsis – Like a lowgrade ripoff of FINAL DESTINATION, but if it started with Go Fish or UNO or some kind of card game.

Leprechaun 2 (1994) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 6%
- Popcornmeter – 29%
- Bennettmeter – 5%
- Genre – Leprechaun Horror
- Stars – Warwick Davis, Charlie Heath, Shevonne Durkin
- IMDB Synopsis – On his one thousandth birthday, an evil leprechaun selects the descendant of one of his slaves to have as his bride, leaving it up to the girl’s boyfriend to save her.
- Bennett Synopsis – I wonder why Jennifer Aniston didn’t come back for the sequel. I don’t know the answer to that, but I can tell you that if you sneeze 3 times and nobody blesses you, a leprechaun can marry you. Which is really bad, but maybe not worse than watching this movie.

Leprechaun 3 (1995) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 17%
- Popcornmeter – 35%
- Bennettmeter – 8%
- Genre – Leprechaun Horror
- Stars – Warwick Davis, John Gatins, Lee Armstrong
- IMDB Synopsis – An evil leprechaun finds himself in Las Vegas, where he proceeds to cause mischief by killing people, granting twisted wishes, and infecting a young man with his green blood.
- Bennett Synopsis – It was at this point that I realized that none of the Leprechaun movies are remotely related. There is no Leprechaun timeline. In fact it might be a different Leprechaun in each movie. And that… feels even worse than Halloween where there are at least 5 distinct timelines. And it feels like I’ve been living a lie, thinking that one movie leads into the other. Also, it is set in Las Vegas, which makes me hate Las Vegas.

Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 44%
- Popcornmeter – 21%
- Bennettmeter – 3%
- Genre – Leprechaun Horror
- Stars – Warwick Davis, Brent Jasmer, Jessica Collins
- IMDB Synopsis – Our deadly leprechaun is in space to woo a beautiful princess who is impressed with his gold and desires to separate him from it.
- Bennett Synopsis – This movie came out in 1996. JASON X came out in 2001. So somebody saw this flaming turd and thought, let’s rip this off, but with Jason Voorhees instead of a leprechaun. That was a good idea to somebody. In fact a good enough idea to a ton of people because a ton of people had to pay to make JASON X. The 2nd worst Friday the 13th movie and one of the worst movies off all-time. And it is all just a terrible ripoff of LERECHAUN 4: IN SPACE. Which is a very thinly veiled (and I mean truck stop toilet paper thin) ripoff of ALIENS! Anyways, there is a Leprechaun in space and it manages to not be interesting.

Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 30%
- Popcornmeter – 31%
- Bennettmeter – 25%
- Genre – Black Leprechaun Horror
- Stars – Warwick Davis, Ice-T, Anthony Montgomery
- IMDB Synopsis – When three rappers want to get even with a pimp, they accidentally unleash a leprechaun who goes on a killing rampage in tha ‘hood.
- Bennett Synopsis – This is one hard hitting Leprechaun movie. Straight from the streets and the ending is uncompromising as it gets. And just when you can’t be more terrified, the here comes the Leprechaun dropping a sick beat and rapping about how a “lep in the hood is up to no good”. With all the rhythm you would expect a leprechaun to possess. Which is none. That crunk was probably crushing the streets in 2000. Also, it is transphobic.

Sinners (2025) – HBOMAX
- Tomatometer – 97%
- Popcornmeter – 96%
- Bennettmeter – 95%
- Genre -Jazz Vampire Horror
- Stars – Miles Caton, Michael B. Jordan, Andrene Ward-Hammon
- IMDB Synopsis – Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.
- Bennett Synopsis – I’d watch this movie without the vampires. But I don’t know that without the vampires we would \get a scene where a bunch of dudes from the KKK get mowed down and in a time where many people have seemed to have forgotten that racists and fascists are the bad guys, I don’t mind seeing a scene where a bunch of racist pricks get mowed down. In fact, I rather enjoyed it. Anyways, great music, great story, great acting and probably the best pure movie of the 31.

Trick ‘r Treat (2007) – HBOMAX
- Tomatometer – 81%
- Crowdmeter – 99%
- Bennettmeter – 38%
- Genre – Anthology Horror
- Stars – Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Quinn Lord
- IMDB Synopsis – Five Halloween stories: A principal has a secret life, a virgin is looking for her first time, a group of kids pull a prank, a woman who loathes Halloween does not respect the rules and a mean old man meets a demonic trick-or-treater.
- Bennett Synopsis – I really have no clue how this movie has such a high score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is very serviceable. At best. Great cast in parts. Brian Cox. Anna Paquin. Leslie Bibb. But when it is an anthology you know none of them are interesting enough to sustain a movie. Maybe “a group of kids pull a prank”, but the payoff on that doesn’t feel quite “earned”. Also a waste of Leslie Bibb.

Until Dawn (2025) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 51%
- Popcornmeter – 67%
- Bennettmeter – 28%
- Genre – Groundhog Day Horror
- Stars – Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’Zion
- IMDB Synopsis – A group of friends trapped in a time loop, where mysterious foes chase and kill them in gruesome ways, must survive until dawn to escape it.
- Bennett Synopsis – A Groundhog Day ripoff, but it is a horror movie, which is done much better in HAPPY DEATH DAY.

Night Drive or Night Terror (1977) – Prime
- Tomatometer – NA
- Popcornmeter – 25%
- Bennettmeter – 14%
- Genre – Road Trip Horror
- Stars – Valerie Harper – Richard Romanus
- IMDB Synopsis – Housewife Carol Turner flees from a psychotic killer on the road between Phoenix and Denver.
- Bennett Synopsis – Rhoda spends 30 minutes of the movie’s 70 minutes trying to get gas.

The Monkey (2025) – Hulu
- Tomatometer – 77%
- Popcornmeter – 55%
- Bennettmeter – 40%
- Genre – Stephen King Horror
- Stars – Theo James, Christian Convery
- IMDB Synopsis – When twin brothers Bill and Hal find their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths start. The siblings decide to throw the toy away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years.
- Bennett Synopsis – Cartoon violence playing out to a story that feels like only the kid from COBWEB would be dumb enough to get caught up in. Don’t turn they key. It isn’t rocket science.

30 Miles from Nowhere (2018) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 78%
- Popcornmeter – 29%
- Bennettmeter – 22%
- Genre – Wisconsin Horror
- Stars – Carrie Preston, Rob Benedict
- IMDB Synopsis – When five college pals return to rural Wisconsin for their estranged friend’s funeral, what begins as an uneasy reunion becomes a terrifying fight for survival.
- Bennett Synopsis – You thought that the ethics and parameters in the Stanford Prison Experiment were terrible, let me introduce you to the Wisconsin… well I can’t even explain how convoluted this experiment (which is the big reveal) ended up being enough to get a name.

The Baby Sitter (2017) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 70%
- Popcornmeter – 62%
- Bennettmeter – 80%
- Genre – Babysitter Horror
- Stars – Judah Lewis, Samara Weaving
- IMDB Synopsis – When Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers that his babysitter belongs to an evil cult that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.
- Bennett Synopsis – Nerdy kid has smoking hot babysitter that just wants to use some of his “pure” blood in a ritual that will grant all the people in their little cult their dreams and he has to be a stupid jerk about it. The “Guy without a Shirt”, flat out one of the greatest horror movie characters all-time. Also, the nerdy kid has a neighbor kid that he is into and she is into him. Might be important later. You know, if they make a sequel.

Weapons (2025) – HBOMAX
- Tomatometer – 93%
- Popcornmeter – 85%
- Bennettmeter – 75%
- Genre – Black Magic Horror
- Stars – Julia Garner, Josh Brolin
- IMDB Synopsis – When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.
- Bennett Synopsis – Let’s start with the fact that Julia Garner is watchable in anything. An absolute national treasure and I still get pissed about what happens to her character at the end of OZARK. If you started a petition to burn down the entire state of Missouri because of what happens to Julia Garner’s character at the end of OZARK, I would sign it. I might even forge your name. Just straight garbage!! Anyways, she is great (duh!) in this movie about a witch (methinks) that makes kids run away from their home in a running form that can only be described as “running like ninnies”.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 36%
- Popcornmeter – 68%
- Bennettmeter – 40%
- Genre – Nostalgia Horror
- Stars – Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jennifer Love-Hewitt
- IMDB Synopsis – A group of friends are terrorized by a stalker who knows about a gruesome incident from their past.
- Bennett Synopsis – I wasn’t sure if this was a reboot or a reimagining or a sequel going in. But turns out that it is a sequel that has the same name of the original just like the recent HALLOWEEN trilogy did when they just called their sequel to the original HALLOWEEN… HALLOWEEN. Like that isn’t maddening. Now you have the original HALLOWEEN. Then the wretched Rob Zombie HALLOWEEN. And then a “direct sequel” (nevermind the other 7 sequels people… nothing to see behind the curtain) that is also called HALLOWEEN. Any ways, this is a sequel that has the same name as the original. And much like the final Star Wars trilogy, this spends a whole lot of time on fan service, But I guess that is okay since those are the best parts since this current bunch of kids isn’t all that interesting. Even what they did last summer is more morally ambiguous than in the original. Where in the original, they ran that dude down. In this one, the guy that dies is probably just a really bad driver. Oh… they also turned Freddy Prinze Jr. into the killer. Lame. Also there is a podcaster character. Can’t make a horror movie without a podcaster these days.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 46%
- Popcornmeter – 57%
- Bennettmeter – 50%
- Genre – Babysitter Horror
- Stars – Judah Lewis, Samara Weaving, Jenna Ortega
- IMDB Synopsis – Two years after Cole survived a satanic blood cult, he’s living another nightmare: high school. And the demons from his past? Still making his life hell.
- Bennett Synopsis – Remember that the nerdy kid had a neighbor girl that were sweet on each other? Well, yeah. Now they are older and she is a hottie and he is still nerdy, so she they didn’t get together. She ended up with some jock and if that isn’t bad enough, she is now the leader of the cult that wants to take his “pure” blood and do the ritual where they can get their wish granted or whatever. But the good part of this is “The Guy Without a Shirt” is back. YES!! They bring Jenna Ortega into this as somebody that Samara Weaving also babysat so the nerdy kid has somebody to hook up with and make his blood impure and then they do that thing where the baddie from the first movie ends up being actually good. I’m still waiting for a spinoff about “The Guy Without a Shirt”. Also Jenna Ortega wears a leather jacket on a jet ski. That is how you know she is a badass.

Salem’s Lot (2024) – HBOMAX
- Tomatometer – 45%
- Popcornmeter – 38%
- Bennettmeter – 35%
- Genre – Stephen King Vampire
- Stars – Lewis Pullman, Jordan Preston Carter
- IMDB Synopsis – An author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover that the townspeople are being attacked by a bloodthirsty vampire.
- Bennett Synopsis – A lot better movie could have been made concentrating on the kid vampire hunter because he is a badass, but instead concentrates on this boring writer character (Stephen King, what are you going to do?) and his equally boring love interest. Also, maybe if you are going to a morgue to watch to see if somebody turns into a vampire, maybe take a weapon with you. Not try to tape two tongue depressors together to make a cross when they do indeed turn into a vampire. Those people deserve what they got.

Black Phone 2 (2025) – Cinemark
- Tomatometer – 72%
- Crowdemeter – 85%
- Bennettmeter – 55%
- Genre – Nightmare on Elm Street Ripoff Horror
- Stars – Mason Thames, Ethan Hawke, Madeleine McGraw
- IMDB Synopsis – As Finn, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, his sister begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.
- Bennett Synopsis – They turn the Grabber into kind of a impotent Freddy Kruger wannabe that can only attack people in dreams. But also, clearly made by people who have never been outside on a cold winter day. Cause the stuff they do, well Mother Nature would have put an end to them before the Grabber ever could.

Death of a Unicorn (2025) – HBOMAX
- Tomatometer – 53%
- Popcornmeter – 76%
- Bennettmeter – 55%
- Genere – Rich Prick Horror
- Stars – Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd
- IMDB Synopsis – A father and daughter accidentally hit and kill a unicorn while en route to a weekend retreat, where his billionaire boss seeks to exploit the creature’s miraculous curative properties.
- Bennett Synopsis – Sometimes when a streak ends in THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE I write something about unicorns and rainbows. These are not those kind of unicorns. These unicorns are murdering machines. But frankly, if you look at the story through the perspective of the unicorns, they are just getting vengeance on the people that killed their child and then mined its corpse for profit, as rich pricks like to do. Matthew McConaughey would give a spirited defense of those unicorns in a court of law. And end his summation with, “Can you see her? I want you to picture that little girl. Now imagine she’s a white unicorn.” Powerful stuff, I know. I’m tearing up right now. And when Chris Cooper takes the stand: “I got a little girl. Somebody kills her, he’s a dead dog. I’ll blow him away just like Carl Lee… umm… them unicorns did! They are heroes. Turn them loose!” The sequel writes itself! Also, best Paul Rudd horror movie since HALLOWEEN 6: THE CURSE OF MICAHEL MEYERS.

Abigail (2024) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 83%
- Popcornmeter – 83%
- Bennettmeter – 83%
- Genre – Ballerina Vampire Horror
- Stars – Melissa Barrera, Alisha Weir, Dan Stevens
- IMDB Synopsis – After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.
- Bennett Synopsis – #1. Dan Stevens quit DOWNTON ABBEY to be like the 3rd person killed in a vampire movie. I’m sure he’s done other stuff, but to me he will always be Matthew from Dowton Abbey and the 3rd person killed in the ballerina vampire movie. #2. I’ve sat through enough dance recitals to know that they would be much more entertaining with vampires.

Rattlesnake (2019) – Netflix
- Tomatometer – 32%
- Bennettmeter – 17%
- Bennettmeter – 15%
- Genre – Cursed Horror
- Stars – Carmen Ejogo, Theo Rossi
- IMDB Synopsis – When a single mother accepts the help of a mysterious woman after her daughter is bitten by a rattlesnake, she finds herself making an unthinkable deal with the devil to repay the stranger.
- Bennett Synopsis – After a stranger saves a woman’s daughter’s life after being bit by a rattlesnake, she finds out that if she doesn’t kill another human being before the end of the day, her daughter will still die. Which could be a moral quandary, but they do the whole, finds a bad person for her to kill thing. Which is still morally questionable, to say the least, but then it turns into a whole self defense thing and the main character and the audience is let off the hook. More or less. Meh.

Good Boy (2025) – Amazon Prime Rental
- Tomatometer – 89%
- Popcornmeter – 82%
- Bennettmeter – 80%
- Genre – Dog Horror
- Stars – Indy, Shane Jensen
- IMDB Synopsis – A loyal dog moves to a rural family home with his owner, only to discover supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. As dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must fight to protect the one he loves most.
- Bennett Synopsis – I’m going to tell you. #1. The dog doesn’t die in this movie. But… #2. This is by far the most heartbreaking movie on this list. But what a profoundly great idea for a movie.

Deranged (1974) – Blu-Ray
- Tomatometer – 50%
- Popcornmeter – 56%
- Bennettmeter – 45%
- Genre – Ed Gein Horror
- Stars – Roberts Blossom, Cosette Lee
- IMDB Synopsis – A deranged rural farmer becomes a grave robber and murderer after the death of his possessive mother, whose corpse he keeps, among others, as his companion in a decaying farmhouse.
- Bennett Synopsis – Another killer based on Ed Gein. Like Norman Bates. Like Leatherface. Like Hannibal Lector. But this one is more like a biopic with a few names changed. I would just dismiss it as being just awful, but it is definitely the template used for THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and Roberts Blossom’s performance is actually really good. It also features the soliloquy I would use if I were ever to audition for a role in a community theater production. “I’m going to read the scene “Diner talks about the physical characteristics of the waitress from DERANGED.” I would get any part I wanted.

From Beyond (1986) – Prime (Movie Night Feature)
- Tomatometer – 74%
- Popcornmeter – 70%
- Bennettmeter – 20%
- Genre – Scientist Horror
- Stars – Barbara Crampton, Jeffery Combs
- IMDB Synopsis – A group of scientists have developed the Resonator, a machine which allows whoever is within range to see beyond normal perceptible reality. But when the experiment succeeds, they are immediately attacked by terrible life forms.
- Bennett Synopsis – The “final girl” is the worst final girl ever. It is literally her fault that everybody dies. And she somehow gets to live. Also just 80’s horror movie goop special effects. Which are the worst. I’ve never been a gore person, but that is the worst era of special effects. I’ll pass bro.

Bring Her Back (2025) – HBOMAX
- Tomatometer – 89%
- Popcornmeter – 79%
- Bennettmeter – 75%
- Genre – Black Magic Horror
- Stars – Billy Barratt, Sally Hawkins, Mischa Heywood
- IMDB Synopsis – A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.
- Bennett Synopsis – Foster care, man. I think foster parents are amazing people, but the amount of movies about the horrors of foster care is like 1 million and the number of movies about the heartwarming aspects of foster care is like zero.

Don’t Breath (2016) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 88%
- Popcornmeter – 79%
- Bennettmeter – 70%
- Genre – Home Invasion Horror
- Stars – Jane Levy, Stephen Lang, Dylan Minnette
- IMDB Synopsis – Three delinquents break into the house of a war veteran who is blind to steal his money. However, they discover that the man is not as defenseless as he seems.
- Bennett Synopsis – So this movie really takes some turns that I didn’t exactly see coming. I even liked the super annoying kid from 13 REASONS WHY, and that was probably the greatest surprise of all. A bigger surprise than the war veteran is actually the bad guy and keeps way too much of his semen in a fridge for my liking.

Azrael (2024) – Disney+
- Tomatometer – 71%
- Popcornmeter – 59%
- Bennettmeter – 32%
- Genre – Religious Zombie Horror
- Stars – Samara Weaving
- IMDB Synopsis – In a world where no one speaks, a devout female-led community hunts down a young woman who has escaped imprisonment. Recaptured, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to an ancient evil in the wilderness, but fights for her own survival.
- Bennett Synopsis – You know how there are people that do “their own medical research” by watching YouTube videos made by some dude in a trailer court in Alabama and now we have measles again and the dumbest person possible is in charge of health in this country? This movie feels like it was written by someone that “did their own research” on Christianity by watching a bunch of YouTube videos on Christianity. It takes place after the rapture (a BS concept to begin with) where there are a bunch of zombies wandering around with the people left behind and ends with the birth of the Anti-Christ. Only real interesting part is that most of the characters don’t speak in the movie because they think speaking is a sin.

Terrifier 3 (2024) – Peacock
- Tomatometer – 78%
- Popcornmeter – 85%
- Bennettmeter – 15%
- Genre – Clown Horror
- Stars – Lauren LaVera, David Howard Thornton
- IMDB Synopsis – Art the Clown is set to unleash chaos on the unsuspecting residents of Miles County as they peacefully drift off to sleep on Christmas Eve.
- Bennett Synopsis – I saved this one for last because the Terrifier movies are kind of a tough watch. I respect the filmmaker because the level of gore they were able to put in the first movie was insane for the budget. But… and I know this sounds stupid… these movies are so mean-spirited and do play more like torture porn because since the writing is next level bad. I confess I watch some of these movies in the background while I’m doing other stuff, but this movie is written so poorly that I had to rewind it like 4 or 5 times to make sure I hadn’t missed something. Which I hadn’t. The “story” just skips huge details and reveals things later that really should have been put on screen to make any of this make sense. So what is the story? I don’t know. Best guess, Art the Clown (who is a legitimately one of the most “terrifying” villains ever) is a demon and hangs with a survivor that gave birth to his head and they are going after the survivor from the last couple of movies so that they can put a demon that is one of them into that survivor, but they also kill a bunch of random people in the most graphic way possible, because that is what clowns do. Clowns suck.
Jesse asked me if the Christmas movies I watched last year were better or worse than the horror movies I watched this year. And at the aggregate level, the horror movies are way better. I watched a few movies in here that were legitimately great movies. I can’t say that about many of the Christmas movies. But now I’ll be taking a break from horror movies until next October.
Until then, Happy Halloween!
Next Friday we will start the pictures from my work trip to Philadelphia!

This is some great homework – thank you!
And on the Dan Stevens thing – RIGHT?!?? The only thing he’s done (at least that I’ve seen) in which he was really good AND a major role was the series “Legion” on F/X. To be fair, we’ve only seen the first season and a teeny bit of the second season, so it may have gone off the rails, but it’s also got Aubrey Plaza. So that’s a plus.
