REMINDER: TODAY IS THE DAY. THE SECOND OF TWO DAYS. IT IS YOUR CHANCE TO SUGGEST THEMES FOR NEXT YEAR’S THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE! YOU CAN DO THAT IN ONE WAY AND ONE WAY ONLY. BY LEAVING YOUR SUGGESTIONS IN THE COMMENTS SECTION OF THIS WEEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE POST. DON’T SEND ME TEXTS. DON’T SEND ME SNAPS. DON’T SEND ME EMAILS. DON’T FLAG ME DOWN ON THE MEAN STREETS OF BOONE. LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS POST WITH YOUR IDEAS FOR A THEME FOR NEXT YEAR’S THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE! REMEMBER, THE BEST WAY FOR ME NOT TO GIVE A FOCUS WHEN YOU COME TO ME TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A THEME IS FOR ME TO CHECK MY RECORDS AND SEE THAT YOU DIDN’T SUGGEST A THEME.
However, there are a few EVERGREEN THEMES that are baked in that will always be included. Every year. Year after year after year. You don’t need to suggest the following themes:
- BLACK & WHITE
- STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
- SLICE OF LIFE
- ROAD TRIP
- #INSTAGOOD
- FLOWER
Here are some suggestions on the best ways to have your theme ideas included:
- Brevity. It it takes more than 3 words to describe the theme it probably isn’t going to be included.
- General. The theme shouldn’t be too specific. It has to be a theme that a subject can be easily found for the general population.
- Not too technical. A theme that can be captured by a wide variety of equipment.
- Not too abstract. Concepts are great, but you don’t want to get too philosophical in the concept.
- Cats. Don’t bother. It isn’t going to happen Shannon!
- Fun! I love outside of the box ideas! Joe’s suggestion this year for “Never Photographed Before” was one of my favorite ideas ever.
I look forward to reading all your suggestions!
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY! A great theme! One of my favorite themes! But was it a popular theme? You will have to keep scrolling to find out!

That is 36 states! 1 district! 8 foreign countries!
I’m definitely not tracking this, but I believe we had submissions from the following unique counties in Iowa this week: Boone, Dallas, Dickinson, Polk, Story and Warren.
There were no milestones this week. AND there were streaks a plenty snapped! Ben and Mary couldn’t build on their submissions from last week. Their streaks are over before they even began. Monica’s streak is gone with the wind after 19 weeks! And frankly my darling, I do give a damn!
Enough dwelling on the past! Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:
WATER – Suggested by Andy Sharp
WATER! What a great theme for Year 13 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!
Here are the Year 13 rules!
- YEAR 13 – THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE RULES
- The picture must be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch and take pictures challenge!
- There is a limit of 2 submissions per person per theme. If you send me more than 2, I will use the first 2 that you submit. If you submit 2 pictures, make sure they are of different subjects.
- Deadline to submit your submission is 11 AM Central Time the following Monday. But that is a deadline. Pictures can be submitted as soon as you take them. In fact, pictures being submitted by Sunday night are GREATLY APPRECIATED!
- To be considered the photographer of an image, you have to be the one that clicks the shutter. If you hand your camera over to somebody else to take a picture of you, you are NOT the photographer of that image.
- No screen captures. This is a photography challenge. Not a “look at what I found on the internet” challenge.
- Please include the location of where the picture was taken with your submission. PLEASE DON’T MAKE ME ASK YOU!
- Please submit images that are OVER 1000 pixels at their largest side. DON’T OVERCROP! Look at this page on a computer, if your images are considerably smaller than everyone else’s pictures, then you are sending too small of images!
- ABSOLUTELY NO USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE!!
- How to Submit
- Email your submission to bennett@photography139.com.
- Text your submission to my Google Pixel 10 Pro. I’m not putting my phone # here. If you know, you know.
I look forward to seeing your interpretation!
Until next Monday, may you run and not be weary. May your heart be filled with song. And may the love of God continue to give you hope and keep you strong.

Comedy
I love the Elvis photo!!
Sarah,
Got you down! Thanks for the suggestion!
Angie,
Yeah, so that was maybe… maybe the second submission I’ve ever had where I used a cell phone picture. And I slightly jacked up the editing, but I do love it. I hope you noted the lung dart in his mouth. I’m just walking around midfield of Jack Trice Stadium when I smell this strangely out of place odor of cigarette smoke in the air. Then walking by me is a dude in an Elvis costume smoking on a cigarette. Right there on the field. I had to stop him and get his picture. It was a moral imperative. I knew that was my STREET PHOTOGRAPHY picture, even though I had already taken several hundred this week at Halloween on the Hill, Land of the Giants, the pep rally, and the Step Concert. It had kind of a family meaning to me as well. With both my Mom’s love for Elvis (and she used to work the training table for the football team) and my Grandpa’s love for smoking (who I was who I started going to Iowa State games with in either 1983 or 1984). I know the smoking connection is pretty weak. Unless those were the same brand of cigarettes my Grandpa used to smoke. Full disclosure, I have no clue what brand of cigarette my grandpa smoked.
This is more what I wanted it to look like. Not a big difference, but some difference.
I had seen the cigarette, but assumed that it was fake! (I have some that I got at Spirit Halloween that look real, but are fake that I use to be weird.)
Eh, I think tying it together with as many family members as you want to that way makes a ton of sense! I don’t think you have to have excuses why something hit you sentimentally – emotion is rarely logical.
