WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 43 – SUNRISE/SUNSET

Participation took a little bit of hit this week. I’m sure it probably had to do a bit with the fact that there are only 2 times a day somebody could take a picture for this theme. If they were taking the theme literally. Or maybe something else caused a dip. I don’t know. I can’t read minds. I can barely read social media posts. I’m only human.

However, the submissions we did get were solid. The submissions for SUNRISE/SUNSET:

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 44 - SMOKE
SMOKE!

Also, perhaps not the most easily accessible subject. However, if you have to, go hang out with a smoker. Some of them don’t even smell that bad. Like the ones that smoke ribs on their decks. Those smokers smell delicious. Yes, I’m saying that Scottie D. smells delicious. I’m comfortable with it. Are you?

Personally, I’m hoping to get caught up in the middle of a protest this weekend. #BLACKLIVESMATTER If that doesn’t work out, I’m looking forward to having an excuse to start a fire. It really is a win-win! Social justice or pyromania!

If you think this is a difficult theme… 2 things:

1. Next week’s theme will be almost painfully easy.
2. It is probably a good time to leave suggestions for next year’s themes in the comments section of this here blog. To date, the only suggestion is GLITTERY.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report. Nobody new has displayed their class, taste, and sophistication by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try to do better next week.

That’s all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very smoky Monday.

  1. Lovely submissions! Bedtime in our house is during sunset, and that’s a sacred time, so I was unable to participate. I couldn’t have beaten these, though!

I don’t think social justice or pyromania have to be mutually exclusive!

Um. Some ideas – sorry for spitballing:

    – Sunflare
    – Candy
    – Fire
    – Simplify
    – Blue
    – Child
    – Elderly
    – Handmade
    – Backlit

  2. That’s why it was SUNRISE OR SUNSET. Get out of bed slacker!

Although this week was definitely a theme where I phoned it in.

BLUE was a theme already. Are you saying that you just really, really, really want to make sure it is still a theme?

    What themes would you kill?

  3. Oh also, I’ve been wanting to talk to you about Shannon getting married.

I want you to put pressure on her to not take Jason’s name and not keep her name, but combine their names.

Barley is already a real sounding name, so I think we should go with Fodole.

  4. Dang it, I forgot we did blue. Do you happen to remember the link where you listed all of the possible themes? I can’t find it when I search, but I fear I’m looking for the wrong terms. BUT KEEP BLUE, apparently.

I am 100% on board with Fodole – would it be pronounced Faux-dole? That’s vaguely French. Shannon took French in high school, I think we could get her on board on that basis alone. I also like pressuring people into silly things, so I’m all in.

  5. All the Weekly Challenge Posts are posted under the Category RWPE. Which stands for Random Weekly Photo Experiment.

However, it looks like I never posted all the themes. So here they are:

    #52: Wild Card

I know a few off the top of my head that I want to replace and a few I want to reword.

But out of this Shannon. The adults are talking. We will let you know when we’ve made a decision on your future last name.

Fauxdole is obviously the way that it should be pronounced. In fact why stop with the pronunciation. Let’s just spell it Fauxdole.

Imagine if the Fauxdoles have a daughter and then that daughter marries Charlie. Then they could adopt the new surname Defauxwaardole. It just flows off the tongue.

It is like Shannon’s family would almost GET the Bardole back, but not quite.

I do solemnly pledge to put the name on your gift tag as Fauxdole. I think I’m just going to start doing gift tags for all gift giving moments in the future. It eliminates cards. You guys know how I feel about cards. If not, consult (500) DAYS OF SUMMER.

  6. ^^That was maybe the best blog comment in history.

I think the ones I’d ax would be: Hometown (I had trouble with the theme), wild animal (can be difficult if you don’t have the right equipment). Not sure about the others?

I’m 100% on-board with both Fauxdole and Defauxwaardole. Although now that’s taking it from a French etymology and maybe making it Swedish. It might be harder for Shannon to accept, but who can resist Charlie? She’ll eventually cave.

I shall change her name to “Shannon Fauxdole” in my phone.

  7. That is high praise and I’m sure a bit of hyperbole.

The ones that I’m thinking of cutting are:

    CAMERA
SPORTS (I feel it is covered adequately by GAMES)
    FRAMED
    WINDOWS
    SMOKE
    WILD CARD
    EMOTIONS
    SUNRISE/SUNSET

    Might combine:

PET & WILD ANIMAL into just ANIMAL

    Simplifying some:

    SKY/CLOUDS should just be sky.

The one’s that I know will be back are:

    BLACK & WHITE
    FACELESS PORTRAIT
    RELIGION
    STILL LIFE
    MUSIC
    ABSTRACT
    RUINS
    COUNTRY (Possibly re-branded as RURAL)
    NIGHT
    TRANSPORTATION
    ROAD TRIP
    FLOWER

    Considering breaking:

PERSPECTIVE into LOW PERSPECTIVE and HIGH PERSPECTIVE.

Just got done changing Shannon’s name in my phone.

What makes me curious is that last time I talked to Shannon was fence riding on what to do with her last name. Her forceful use of the CAPS LOCK KEY makes me think she has made a decision.

  8. Those seem like legitimate choices to me, for sure. I think they all make a lot of sense, especially the combinations/break-aparts.

I hadn’t even thought to ask Shannon FAUXDOLE (I can use caps, too!) what she was doing with her last name the other day!

  9. I plan to hyphenate my last name, so it will be Bardole-Foley. I felt like I needed to write that out because one of you certainly would have responded “Faux-dole”. I’m not even sure how to feel about the two of you discussing my potential future children…

  10. Can you at least go with Foley-Doley? While I’m pretty stuck on Fauxdole, I feel like perhaps there’s a compromise where you can call yourself what you want, as long as it’s Foley-Doley or Fauxdole.

  11. Barfoley is acceptable!

See, these are like the Geneva peace accords. We just need to have a summit and hammer out each other’s sides. Barfoley is good – I still think that if you hear “Fauxdole” with the proper sophisticated inflection, you’ll understand just how amazing it is.

  12. I didn’t actually ask Shannon what she was going to do about her last name. I tried not to ask any questions really. It can be overwhelming answering the same question over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

Like when people make FIGHT CLUB references when they find out that she makes soap. She’s heard them before, thanks for the originality though.

Instead of asking questions, that I’m sure she was tired of answering, I just gave her unsolicited advice. Unsolicited advice is how I roll.

Shannon brought up the name thing, so it clearly was weighing heavy on her heart. Good thing she has us as her learned and wise counsel to steer her onto the path of truth, light, righteousness, and badass last names.

Shannon also doesn’t know how to feel about us discussing her potential future children. That is troubling because people should always be in touch with their feelings.

However, don’t worry Shannon. This is just a hypothetical. If you decide to have children or decide to adopt children or decide to not have children, I’ll support you either way.

But if I see any hypothetical future child wearing an article of Hawkeye clothing, I will be calling DHS. This is my solemn pledge.

  13. I also appreciate and respect when people make their own decisions about having children. T&K don’t want any – and so, rather than do something to cater to societal pressure and not have their heart in it, they don’t have any. I think that’s admirable.

  14. For the record, I personally own more Cyclones than Hawkeye attire – by a lot.

  15. P.S. I HATE your CAPTCHA Code. That last comment, I had to try about 5 different codes before I got one right…

  16. Shannon, if you log into the website, you don’t have to enter the CAPTCHA.

    That might make life easier.

I also loathe CAPTCHA, but every time I take it down I get bombarded with tons and tons of spam comments. The internet is a bad place. Filled with bad people. Kind of like the real world. Only more cowardly.

I am proud of the fact that I’m sure that your wardrobe shimmers with cardinal & gold, but I was a little worried about Jason.

You apparently warned him that Hawkeye fans weren’t particularly welcome at my house. Which while is partially true (especially when I have a Cy-Hawk football party this year) also implies that he isn’t a Cyclone fan. DUN-DUN-DUUUN!!!

Plus, let’s not talk about Andrew.

  17. I can’t find the login for the website. If you point me in the right direction, I will do that.

Jason is really not a sports fan. At all. So one time I saw a Northern Iowa shirt in his closet. But I haven’t seen Iowa State or Iowa clothing in his closet at all. So although I wouldn’t call him an Iowa State fan, he’s definitely not an Iowa fan. So at least he’s not on the wrong side…

Andrew may not be my only sibling who owns more Hawkeye than Cyclone attire. But my niece once picked out an ISU shirt as a Christmas gift. So I’m trying.

  18. Now I’m curious about the nature of your warning to Jason. What did you tell him?

The Site Admin link is in the lower right hand corner of the website.

I like what I’m hearing about your niece though.

  19. Hooray for login! I even found my password!

I don’t recall what I said to Jason. But I’m sure it all began with a story about painting the house cardinal with gold trim.

You should know that Emma owns more purple and gold than any other team. But she told me she’s a Panther-Cyclone. And she’s had her photo taken with more than one Cy statue.
