34 submissions! That is a pretty great week. Could have been 35 if TJ Maxx has more inspiring buildings or 36 if Funk could have found a building in the mountains. But I digress.

There were submissions this week taken in the following places:

+ Arkansas
+ Hawaii
+ Iowa
+ Kansas
+ Michigan
+ Nebraska
+ Pennsylvania
+ Spain
+ Texas

Thanks to Myriah’s trip to Hawaii, we get to add Hawaii to the list!

Here is the current calendar year list for states:

38 states and 1 district! That is pretty impressive! Over 75% of the way there!

he Outside of the United States map is currently:

There were some pretty big milestones reached this week! Shannon became the 2nd member ever of the Triple Digit Club! WooHoo! Joe reached the Year and a Half Club! WooHoo! Finally Alexis reached the Half Year Club! WooHoo!

But it wasn’t all good news. Faust couldn’t build on his submission from last week. Jen’s streak went up in flames at 3. Funk’s streak tumbled back down the mountain after 4 weeks. The humanity!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 421 - RELIGION
RELIGION

RELIGION! What a great theme for Year 10 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!!

RELIGION! I bet a few people groaned when they saw this was the theme. That is okay. You didn’t think a website that is grounded in Christianity would go a year without the RELIGION theme did you? Where do you think the name Photography 139 comes from? I’m not forcing you to go to church to take this picture. A RELIGION picture could be as easy as taking a picture of a house of worship. Doesn’t have to be a church. There are a ton of RELIGIONs in the world and a ton of them are probably practiced near you. Within 20 minutes of where I live in central Iowa there are synagogues, mosques, and even a mandir. But it doesn’t have to be of a building. Or even a worship service. It can be a picture of a book or a song or a symbol. There are religious symbols all over, if you take a second to look. There are so many possibilities!

While considering possible subjects for your submission, meditate on the following quote and I have no doubt you will come up with a great image:

Science gives man knowledge which is power, religion gives man wisdom which is control.
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge. There is a limit of 3 submissions per participant. To be considered the photographer, you have to be the one that takes the picture. Don’t be stealing the work of other artists. You can submit pictures for other photographers that took pictures with your camera or phone, but give credit where credit is due.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is it. Thems the rules!

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of RELIGION in this place that is was built on a foundation of Christianity next Monday.

10 thoughts on “WPC – WEEK 420 – ARCHITECTURE”

  1. Two thoughts:

    – I’ve been to that market Elainie posted! My mom used to live about four blocks away, it’s awesome!

    – They burnt down the old Pizza Hut on Story St?!? So many memories. So many yearbook ads.

  2. Yeah, her husband (Sabas) goes to Cleveland for training quite a bit. This last week she met him there. They also went to Niagara Falls. Small world.

Yep, they burnt it down yesterday for the fire department to practice. Supposedly Bellucci’s is going to move out there, but I will believe it when it actually happens. I actually have next to no memories in that Pizza Hut. We were a hard core Godfather’s family. Of the corporate pizza joints. We also supped at Bellucci’s and Tic Toc for pizza quite a bit. We always got ham and onion and Bellucci’s and sausage and green pepper at Tic Toc. I have no clue why.

But the grandson of the guy that started Tic Toc runs Great Plains now. At least he did last I knew.

  3. My parents were all in on Pizza Hut; we rarely went to Godfather’s until I got to high school and the new building was built. It’s always like finding a diamond when you see a Godfather’s in the wild these days.

I did love the Tic Toc. I didn’t notice when we were judging if anything is there now? I assume that closed long ago. I do love me some Great Plains.

I didn’t know that! I really do enjoy Great Plains. Nobody else in my family besides Alice does, however, so we rarely get it.

  4. I love Jon. And I don’t really know C-Cash or whatever it is you call him on social media, but I’m sure he’s great. But you and Alice need to fake your deaths. Burn down your house. And get new identities. You need to cut people out of your life that don’t love Great Plains. Especially if the words “there is too much cheese” has ever escaped their lips.

Ohh… I keep track of where the Godfather’s Expresses are. When ever I go to Minnesota I will stop at one in Dows. When I go to Kansas, I will stop at one in Cameron, Missouri. If I go east on Highway 20 I will stop at one that is near Grundy Center.

A couple of weeks ago I ate at a sit down Godfather’s in Milford, Iowa and it was amazing.

Tic Toc has been gone for a while now. First kind of a generic American style restaurant moved in there. Then this over the top high end Italian restaurant went in there. Which was fine, but I’m not looking to spend $30 on a meal too often.

Right now it is a pretty good Mexican restaurant, which is good because La Carreta has gone completely downhill.

  5. C$, like an administrative share of a hard drive! But we pronounce it “C-money,” because it sounds like he’s not a goofy 9-year-old. But you are entirely correct, they have expressed opinions about “too much cheese,” to which I say they’re not trying hard enough. If you can’t handle it, just have one slice, it’s not that hard.

We’ve hit the one in Grimes, but just gotten carryout. It tastes like delicious nostalgia. Sort of like Taco Tico, but with more actual deliciousness. I assumed you hated the way nostalgia tastes, what with your hatred of the Tico.

Yeah, I don’t know that I want expensive Italian, anyway, since noodles cost about 30 cents for an entire plate. It just doesn’t make me happy.

That’s too bad on La Carreta – or “Boone Fuente” as we always called it in my house. I’m glad there’s a new option! I haven’t been to “Nevada Fuente” recently, either – which I should, because they had a diablo pasta that was good.

  6. There is no such thing as too much cheese. Hashtag Facts.

I have no nostalgia for Taco Tico because I’m not from Fort Dodge. I came to Taco Tico in adulthood, so I could see it for what it was. Awful.

As a general rule I’m not that big of a fan of Italian. And I 100% sign on to your policy. It shouldn’t cost me 30 bucks for what cost you 42 cents to make.

There is a rumor that the people that used to own La Fuente started up a new restaurant in Colo. Called La Finquita. I know the restaurant exists. I don’t know if it is really the La Fuente people. I guess you could find out by going in and see if the waiters are creepy AutoFocus. But they serve breakfast, so I will have to try it at some point. Cause I don’t really like making breakfast. Although my scrambled egg form is really whipping into shape.

  7. I think I’ve told you that Jon and I went through the Tico drive-thru after my grandma’s funeral, and the tacos *were* empirically awful. Jon spit his out. But the unfortunately-named Crusto still reigns supreme. I will get just those and be happy.

We went to Latin King for Mother’s Day. Because I am not going to buy just 42 cent pasta for $25, I ordered the chicken piccata because I adore lemon and capers. It was unilaterally not worth it – none of our dishes were very good, and it was ridiculously expensive for mediocre food. The kids did get to see the giant AE cow, so that was sort of nice.

The surest way to see if the La Fuente owners also own La Finquita is to see if it smells like tinkle. If it does, it’s got to be them. I’d give that a shot, though – the Fuente owners’ kids went to our elementary school for a year or two, so I’d occasionally see them at events.

Breakfast is delicious, but so much work for that early in the morning.

  8. I recently bought a small Blackstone. One of the reasons is so I can make breakfast and have less cleanup. At least that is my theory. Also planned on taking it tailgating and possibly camping. At least that is the plan. It will probably just collect dust. But I had a big plan to go get groceries tonight and have breakfast for supper, but now I have to move a pile of dirt. My life is very hard.

I’ve eaten at The Latin King once. Back when the Iowa State Fair Photography used to have a Reception the Tuesday before the Fair started for people to come see their pictures and there was an award ceremony. I really wish they would bring this back, but I’m sure they never will at this point. Anyways, Sara went with me once and we ate at Latin King afterwards. It is always in the Top 5 for best restaurants in Iowa. My experience was the same as yours. It was not impressive at all.

Whenever I meet up with Gina Good (install, UGM, AAO) she always wants to go to an Italian Restaurant and I have yet to be impressed by one. Although I have had her Italian cooking and it is fantastic. And she takes us to expensive ass Italian restaurants too. I think I broke her heart once when I told her my favorite restaurant she brought us food from was Chicken Express.

But that is just me. A simple-no-collar Joe that likes a bucket of fried chicken. Not a 40 dollar bowl of pasta. Why I pursue the working man’s sandwich… the tenderloin.

Although, I admit, I will crush a good tiramisu. Which I think is fair, since I don’t make her buy me wine. I don’t want to know how much she is spending on wine.

Is a Crusto like a cinnamon encrusted pastry?

  9. Jon’s Christmas/birthday gift last year was a Blackstone! It’s awesome for breakfast, but the real winner is chicken fried rice with yum yum sauce in it. It can give it a nice crust that is amazing. (So I guess technically there’s also scrambled eggs in that, so it’s sort of breakfast.) I hope you get lots of use out of yours – ours hasn’t seen much action this summer because it’s an entire ordeal to pull it out of the garage, but if we can ever get a 3-season porch built, we’re going to try to get it on a covered patio so that all he has to do is pull off the cover to use it.

A reception for the Salon would be amazing, and would give a really fun opportunity to get to meet people and see all of the photos a little better. It’s a shame they don’t do that – I’d have loved to have gone. Jon and I did also go to Latin King once several years ago for our anniversary, and we ordered mozz sticks, because of the aforementioned superiority of cheese. It tasted like fish sticks, which is not the preferred flavor of coating for mozz sticks. Again, just not worth the price and wait.

I miss Gina Good, she’s just about the nicest person I’ve ever met! It does not surprise me that she’s a rock-star cook of Italian food. And I agree – I think the best Italian food I’ve had has been homemade, not in a restaurant. Of course I had some fantastic Italian food in Italy – but there was also some pretty mediocre stuff. I don’t think I had a single good meal in Venice.

Fried chicken is artery-clogging deliciousness, and it’s our Iowa-bred right to say so. Jon loves tiramisu! I generally favor a cannoli, because something about wet cake puts me off. Wine is ridiculous, and it tastes bad, I don’t understand it.

It is! They take shards of fried… tortilla, I’d guess? It’s hard to tell at the point you get it, because it’s puffy and covered in cinnamon sugar. It’s 1000% the entire reason to go to Taco Tico if you don’t have the childhood memories attached.

  10. I hadn’t thought about the rice thing, but that actually is a great idea. I need to get on that!
