A New Dawn of Photography 139

First I need to state the obvious. I’m doing a redesign of the Photography 139 website. This is both a content change and a change of the look. Because of these changes, there are some obvious growing pains. For example, yesterday I did not intentionally hide the names of the people who submitted for THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE from the email subscribers. I didn’t know that the way I coded the images in that post would not show up in the emails since they showed up on the website. If you didn’t figure out you could go to the website to figure out who took what picture, click on the link below and you will be taken there and all the mysteries will be solved:

WPC – WEEK 492 – CONTRAST

This won’t be the end of the growing pains either.

The new website design also comes with a new logo. Gone (mostly, but not completely yet) is the old Photography 139 Polaroid logo designed by Shawn Brogden, like 15 years ago. I did love it, but it was well, well beyond time for a change.

I got Monica to design a new logo and I gave her the direction of I wanted it to have an old time camera feel. If you are observant, you have noticed that this new logo has shown up as a watermark on many pictures in posts in the last couple of weeks. She gave me the same logo with several different color options. As it was important to keep purple as the key color in the Photography 139 branding. Here are those options:

You will see most if not all of these color options (and shading options) crop up on the website and other places in the future. However, I also wanted a secondary logo and Monica delivered on that. Here are some variations of the secondary logo:

This logo you will see on the header of the website and has become my avatar on the website. I’m sure it will crop up other places. Have a tentative plan to use it on the back of my business cards.

Another change I have made is moving to a different theme for the website. I’ve used one that was designed by Mike Vest for years, but have changed to a more modern theme with more functions. It is possible I could change again, but for right now I’m comfortable with Neve.

I’ve also adjusted the purple that is the background of the website. It is still purple, of course, but it is a brighter purple.

Part of the new design also changed the Journal pages (AKA “An Artist’s Notebook”) to a tile format. It looks like this:

There are some minor changes. Here and there like:

  • Moved the side menu from the left side to the right side.
  • Extend the height of the headers.
  • Eliminated links to Flickr and Twitter.
  • Moved the “Search” function to the side menu.
  • Eliminated the last 6 “featured posts” from the home page.
  • Added a purplish overlay to the featured image of individual journal posts.

I’m also in the process of adding new Pages content to the website. This is perhaps my greatest failing in this website. I basically created a few pages that sorta described my vision with this website and then literally didn’t touch them for years and years and years.

That is changing. I’m converting the “About” page into an “Inspo” page. I’m going to convert the “Contact” page into a “Bio” page. The one page that is finished is the “Projects” page. I converted the old “Products” page into this page and now that it has went through the eyes of my proofreader (thanks Elizabeth) it is ready for mass consumption.

You can get there by clicking on the link below:

PROJECTS

This page details some of the photo projects I’ve tackled over the years. Including THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT, THE TOWN SIGNS PROJECT, and THE BOONE ART CENTER. Just to name a few.

I also have plans to create a page devoted to THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE, that might some day even include a THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE Hall of Fame. A page devoted to my “Eras”. A page devoted to flowertography. A page devoted to street photography. And… well I’m still thinking on others. But as new pages are completed, I will definitely report on them!

Finally, the secondary and accent colors are definitely not set in stone yet. I’m still tinkering with those, but that is on the backburner along with a potential font tweak. A lot of things are in the hopper. Stay tuned!

  1. WOW… Great job Monica on the new logos. From the primary to the secondary, even a lowly novice like me can see that these will be seen and easily remembered as Photography 139. Change is hard. Making those changes in the background, I would imagine are even harder. What you have done looks great. Nice work Bennett. I’m not sure that anyone who simply enjoys photography, a story, a song, or an idea has ever seen your site and not walked away with a smile. Great work.
