Here is the list of rules for Year 12 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE:
1. The picture must be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch and take pictures challenge!
- There is a limit of 2 submissions per person per theme. If you send me more than 2, I will use the first 2 that you submit. If you submit 2 pictures, make sure they are of different subjects.
- Deadline to submit your submission is 11 AM Central Time the following Monday. But that is a deadline. Pictures can be submitted as soon as you take them.
- To be considered the photographer of an image, you have to be the one that clicks the shutter. If you hand your camera over to somebody else to take a picture of you, you are NOT the photographer of that image.
- No screen captures. This is a photography challenge. Not a “look at what I found on the internet” challenge.
- Please include the location of where the picture was taken with your submission.
There are still 2 ways to submit:
- Email your submission to bennett@photography139.com.
- Text your submission to my Google Pixel 8 Pro.
But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates or streaks or the rules of the challenge or how to submit. You came to see the submissions and what streaks continued and what streaks flamed out:

The big milestone this week was Elizabeth joining the 3.5 Year Streak Club! WooHoo! WooHoo! WooHoo! Woo! We also had our first ever submission from Alice. Now, it was an accidental submission and I had already coded it, so I wasn’t going to take it down. But you never know. It might become a thing! But it wasn’t all fun and farmer’s markets. 2 streaks were snapped! Sara couldn’t build on last week’s submission. Her streak is over before it began. Becky’s streak is over at 2.
Enough dwelling on the past! Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

HISTORICAL BUILDING (Iowa State Fair Photography Salon Theme)
HISTORICAL BUILDING! What a great theme for Year 12 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!
This theme was added to year 12 because it the special theme category for the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. I don’t normally put out explanations of the themes, but I thought I would share the theme description from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon:
All around Iowa you will find Iowa “Historic Buildings. The Iowa Code defines any building or structure that is listed in the state, or National Register of Historic Places; that is designated as a historic property under local or state designation law or survey; that is certified as a contributing resource within a National Register-listed or locally designated historic district; or that has an opinion or certification that the property is eligible to be listed on the state or National Register of Historic Places either individually or as a contributing building to a historic district by the state historic preservation officer pursuant to Iowa Code section l 03A.42 or the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places.
Your assignment this year is to capture the essence of why this is viewed as a historical building in Iowa. The idea is to creatively use the design and placement to show the world the building like we have never seen it before.https://storage.googleapis.com/iowa-state-fair/documents/2024ISFPhotoTheme.pdf
Here are some things to think about when taking your photos for this assignment. You don’t always have to wait for a bright sunny day to take your photos, shoot in a variety of weather conditions and times of day. Once you have decided on the time of day you want to shoot be sure to prioritize good lighting. Look for unique angles and explore details of the architecture of the buildings you are photographing. Don’t be afraid to include people in your photographs, as in all good photography, take your photo as if you are telling us a story.
I confess to thinking this is poorly written and a little confusing. But I’m just passing along the inspiration for this week’s theme.
Obviously many of you don’t live in Iowa, so I shortened the theme to HISTORICAL BUILDINGS!
I look forward to seeing your interpretation!
That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will see your idea of HISTORICAL BUILDING in this place that has no building next Monday!
