Before I get into the meat of this food adventure, I want to enlighten you to the fact that the Best New Fair Food finalist have been named for the Iowa State Fair.
Here is some info from the Iowa State Fair website:
The TOP 3 Best New Foods, in no particular order:
- The Scotcheroo Shake, Over The Top: Meet your new Fair favorite – a rich, creamy shake made with our handmade scotcheroo ice cream – peanut butter and butterscotch ice cream swirled with gooey scotcheroo fudge and packed with chewy chunks of the classic Midwest treat. It’s crowned with fluffy whipped cream, generous drizzles of chocolate and caramel and a full slice of scotcheroo on top. A nostalgic dessert reimagined as the ultimate Fair shake.
- Three Little Pigs: Whatcha Smokin? BBQ?: Oak-kissed smoked ham balls served as a trio flight of nostalgic flavors. First is a savory and sweet honey and mustard-glazed ham ball topped with cornbread crumbles, reminiscent of a tried and true corn dog. Next is a tangy cherry soda glaze with Maraschino cherries to give it the old-timey feel. The third ham ball has a buttery vanilla glaze dusted with powdered sugar, bringing a sweet contrast that plays on the classic Fair treat.
- Bacon Chicken Ranch Eggroll, Winn & Sara’s Kitchen: Experience the savory delight of Winn and Sara’s handmade Bacon Chicken Ranch Eggroll, made fresh just for the Iowa State Fair. Each eggroll is lovingly wrapped by hand, filled with tender chicken, crispy bacon and rich white cheddar cheese. A perfectly golden, crunchy exterior drizzled with Winn and Sara’s famous homemade ranch dressing. Every bite is a delightful combination of cheesy, savory goodness wrapped in a crispy, flaky shell.
Plus, because the theme is Fair Sweet Fair, The Scotcheroo Shake from Over The Top has been named the Fair’s Sweetest Food.

I can’t wait to get my hands on more than a few of these!
It has been a minute since a food adventure post concentrated on a tenderloin. The reason for these food adventure posts to begin with! But today’s post does concentrate on a tenderloin. Actually might have been the second to last tenderloin I’ve eaten. That can’t possibly be right. What has become of me?
This tenderloin I took down while going to the Food Truck Showdown in downtown Ames with Kim and Jesse. It was a lot smaller than the previous year. But we still managed to find plenty of food.
Some pictures:

On the way to the food trucks I ran into Joe. It had been too long. If you are looking for an Uber driver, you could do worse.

I decided on trying a tenderloin from The Big Red Food Truck.

$13 for a tenderloin and fries. Actually cheap by today’s standards, where the price of everything is going through the roof.

To wash down my tenderloin I got a Mango Lassi.

On the way out we stopped at Marmalade Moon for some ice cream!
OBSERVATIONS
- The tenderloin wasn’t that great. It was on the dry side and the breading was bland.
- I’m a sucker for crinkle cut fries and these were good enough.
- The mano lassi was solid.
- Marmalade Moon always hits the spot. Ice cream is like seeing Billy Joel in concert. It never disappoints.
Next Sunday’s food adventure will also involve a tenderloin!
