Tenderloining – Boone Pride Event Field Work

I’m trying to eat more new tenderloins for their numerous health benefits this year. Back in April I went up to the Boone Pride event because I am ally AF. Also, I wanted to check out the food truck situation up there.

The Boone Pride event is a nice event that has really grown over time. I was there pretty late in the day, but there was still more people I had seen there than ever before.

One food truck really drew my eye. Gluten Free Steils. It is weird that there are people that won’t eat gluten free food. I’m not sure why other than I know toxic masculinity can really damage the thinking skills of those afflicted with it.

Here some pictures of what I took down from Gluten Free Steils:

I got the tenderloin and an order of the mozzarella sticks.

As a general rule, I’m not a big mozzarella stick guy. If I’m going to knock down fried cheese, I prefer cheddar nuggets.

But these. These! These were a revelation. Easily the best mozzarella sticks I’ve ever had! There isn’t even a close second.

The tenderloin was solid. Not spectacular. But solid.

I dream about these at night.

With the marinara. Without the marinara. Sublime!

Mayo doesn’t really belong on a tenderloin. But I aways get them as is.

I’m legitimately so sad that you didn’t get to try these. Even if I don’t like you, I’m sad for you that you didn’t get to try these.

Last bite!

The verdict is, YES! I would definitely go back. I believe this food truck is based out of Des Moines so I hope that I run into it at some random festival this year. Maybe the Des Moines Art Festival. For the mozzarella sticks alone!

The tenderloin was solid. It had many things going for it. Toasted bun. Good meat to bun ratio. Maybe a little thin, but not too thin. We weren’t getting into pork fritter territory. But it could have been thicker. The breading was solid but not spectacular. Not a fan of mayo on a tenderloin. It isn’t a deal breaker, but not my favorite. Also red onions. This is becoming more and more a standard. But I’m not a fan. Red onions aren’t bad, but I prefer white.

It was good, but not good enough for the Tenderloin Pantheon. If you have forgotten (mostly because I’ve never explicitly spelled it out, this is the list:

  • TENDERLOIN PANTHEON
    • Darrell’s Place – Hamlin, Iowa
    • BK’s – Ogden, Iowa (RIP)
    • The County House – Colo, Iowa (RIP)
    • Nick’s – Des Moines, Iowa (RIP)
    • Cole’s Ice Cream – Slater, Iowa (Unsure of the status of this place)
    • Stumble Inn – Bradford, Iowa
    • Prairie Moon on Main – Prairieburg, Iowa
    • Dairy Sweet – Dunlap, Iowa
    • Dexfield Diner & Pub – Redfield, Iowa

I’ll have to doublecheck with Scott to make sure I’m not missing anything.

Next Sunday’s food adventure will involve another food tuck.
