Tenderloining: West Ames Field Work

Back in August, after church, Teresa and I went to give Mullett’s a try. They just opened a new location in Ames and the Des Moines restaurant is supposed to have one of the best breakfasts out there. I should have got the breakfast…

Here are some pictures from the meal:

The Pickle Chips are described on the menu like this:

Thick crinkle cut dill pickle chips hand breaded and fried. Served with ranch dressing.

The price is $11.99.

The Pork Tenderloin is described on the menu like this:

Hand-breaded pork loin with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickle, and mayonnaise on a toasted brioche bun.

The price is #13.99 It comes with a side. The onion rings are a deluxe side that costs a little extra.

The fact that they put mayo on a tenderloin should have been a warning sign.

1st… the fried pickles were exquisite! They set a level expectation that the tenderloin couldn’t deliver. I want to go on record as stating that the fried pickle spear is superior to the fried pickle chip, but both are great.

2nd… Onion rings are superior to onion straws (or whatever they call them in your neck of the woods) but the fried onions were still really good.

3rd… the tenderloin was a big disappointment. It was pretty bland. The “breading” didn’t have much flavor. It had a decent thickness and the meat to bun ratio was decent. But the meat was kind of dry and it was just overall bland.

I would go back to Mullett’s but I wouldn’t get the tenderloin. I would see if their breakfast lives up to the hype.

Mullet’s is located at:

4518 Mortensen Road
Ames, Iowa

Next Sunday’s food adventure will involve the Des Moines Downtown Farmer’s Market.

  1. We have only eaten at the Mullets down in Des Moines once, but it was pretty good! We have not made it to the new Ames one yet, but those fried pickles may have just sold me. I don’t even need to eat any actual food – although those are not cheap!

  2. I am sort of a breakfast purist – two over-hard eggs, some bacon, and wheat toast! Threw it together into a self-made sandwich with some Cholula on top. It was really good – I like the eggs and bacon both to be really crispy around the edges, and they delivered!

I’ve thought about ranking the breakfast places I’ve tried in Des Moines and Ankeny. I loved Eggs & Jam, but one time the food wasn’t consistent. Americana is pretty great, Early Bird was really good. Really enjoyed the craziness of The Breakfast Club, and the bathroom there has a disco button outside of it – I think it says like “press here for disco,” and it delivers. But Mullets has the best all-American classic described earlier.
