Birthday Road Trip: Independence

After Nader and I finished lunch and walking around Monticello we started the meandering trip back home. We headed north and travelled west on US-20. I think my main idea was to visit Cedar Rock State Park – home of a Frank Lloyd Wright house, but these plans were squashed by the fact the house was already closed for the day. Instead we ended up in Independence touring the Wapsipinicon Mill.

Here are the pictures from Independence:

It is a cool building and to tour it is free!

It sits in downtown Independence on the Wapsipinicon River. Which I type cause you have to pronounce it in your head when you read it.

The current structure was built in 1867.

It operated as a mill until 1976.

This is as much of the lower levels of the mill that you get to see.

I would like to visit Independence again at some point this year. There is a Mental Health Institute Museum there that I would love to see some day. However it is only open by appointment. So I’m not sure how viable it is to visit. I guess it will involve some more research.

After leaving Independence we headed south to get back to US-30. But that is a story for next Wednesday.
