Here are the rules for Year 12 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE:
- The picture must be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch and take pictures challenge!
- There is a limit of 2 submissions per person per theme. If you send me more than 2, I will use the first 2 that you submit. If you submit 2 pictures, make sure they are of different subjects.
- Deadline to submit your submission is 11 AM Central Time the following Monday. But that is a deadline. Pictures can be submitted as soon as you take them.
- To be considered the photographer of an image, you have to be the one that clicks the shutter. If you hand your camera over to somebody else to take a picture of you, you are NOT the photographer of that image.
- No screen captures. This is a photography challenge. Not a “look at what I found on the internet” challenge.
- Please include the location of where the picture was taken with your submission.
- Email your submission to bennett@photography139.com.
- Text your submission to my Google Pixel 8 Pro.
There are still 2 ways to submit:
It is the third Monday of the month and on the third week of the month I like to share a map of all the states where people have submitted from heading into today. Here is that map:

Enough dwelling on the past! Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

TWO TONE – SUGGESTED BY ANDY SHARP
TWO TONE! What a great theme for Year 12 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!
A TWO TONE picture is a picture of an object that only has two colors. Or at least the portion of the object you photograph only has two colors. There are also some cameras or editing software that would allow you to convert any picture into a TWO TONE (more likely called duotone) image.
I look forward to seeing your interpretation!
PHOTOGRAPHY TIP OF THE WEEK
Last week we discussed what shutter speed is. This week I want to share some good general rules for the uses of certain shutter speeds.
- To freeze action: 1/500 to 1/8000
- Speeds where you can still hold the camera by hand: 1/500 – 1/30
- Use a Tripod: 1/15 – 30 seconds
- To create blurs: Anything longer than 1/2
These are just general rules. It all depends on how fast what you are photographing is moving. The faster your subject, the faster the shutter speed you need. Of course also, depending on what kind of image you want to create.
Another good rule of thumb when selecting shutter speed is that your shutter speed should at a minimum be the inverse of the length of your lens. If you are using a 50 mm lens, your shutter speed should be a minimum of 1/100. The idea being the longer the lens, the closer to the subject you get, the faster the shutter needs to be conuteract any camera shake you might get from your hands. Even the person with the steadiest hands will shake the camera slightly. This is more pronounced if you don’t use the proper stance and with your eye to the viewfinder instead of the looking at the back screen. But the proper photography stance is a subject for another day!
That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will see your idea of TWO TONE in this place that loves all the tones next Monday.
