This food adventure actually took place before my work trip to Philadelphia. But I was so hot to trot to get those Philly Cheesesteaks out into the tubes of the interwebs that I pushed this one back a full 7 weeks. But that isn’t to impugn this meal or this adventure. Because the food was pretty fantastic and it was a good day!
Teresa agreed to go with me and hit some Des Moines record shops that were participating in the annual Record Store Day. I’ve never actually went out to Record Store Day, but since I started “New to Me Vinyl Friday” on the Snapchat to overwhelming popularity (in my mind) I figured I should go hit it up.
While we were in the Beaverdale area we ate at a Korean fried chicken place I’ve wanted to try for awhile called Basic Bird. Here are some pictures from the day:

You know your boy loves him some The Dead Milkmen!

This was by far the most amazing and bizarre album cover I saw on this day, but I didn’t pull the trigger because I’m not familiar with Dwarves. But I bet they are amazing! How could they not be!

Hopefully.

The only record store where there was an actual wait to get into it.

Pretty sure this is the sexiest album ever released.

Spooky Truth going all in on domestic violence.

I need to go here. You know why.

No lies detected.

I hate coffee for a wide variety of reasons, but I support any business that supports dogs.

Basic Bird.

Gross Coke products.

Pickled Daikon

Corn Cheese

Korean Potato Salad

Honey Butter French Fries

Look at these cowards! I still bought a couple records from them, but their name is withheld to protect them from their own cowardice.

I could probably tell you about the Dwarves, but whatever you are imagining, the true story of the band is weirder.
Basic Bird was fantastic! So here are my observations.
THE GOOD
- They are consistent to their theme. The bird art is whimsical and delightful.
- Everything I had was delicious.
- The Honey Butter French Fries while technically not an appetizer was still the best new appetizer I’ve had this year! It has bacon, garlic butter aioli, cheese, sweet corn, and shredded cabbage. Sublime!
- I got the Double Dunk for the sauce on my wings and it was fantastic.
- Every side I had was delicious.
- You get so much food. wings, three sides, and rice!
THE BAD
- They serve gross Coke products.
THE UGLY
- You get a ton of food. And it is good. But it is costly!
THE DAMAGE
- A 9 piece, drink, and the fries ran me $45.58.
THE VERDICT
- I’d definitely eat there again. Because you get so much food, I might just get the fries. Or I would need to be with a larger group of people.
HOW DO YOU EAT THERE?
- 2607 Beaver Avenue – Des Moines, Iowa
- Mon-Sun: 11 AM – 9 PM
Next Sunday’s food adventure will involve tacos!
