Taco ‘Bout It: Jefferson Field Work

A couple Fridays back Jay and I ventured over to Jefferson for their Bell Tower Days for FNSC. Despite my affection for small town festivals and the close proximity of Jefferson to Boone I had never been to Bell Tower Days before.

We went on Friday night, so we didn’t really get the whole show, but we got enough of it. I was impressed! They had something like 4 times the amount of food trucks that Pufferbilly Days has.

Here are some cell phone pictures from Bell Tower Days:

On our way to Jefferson we stopped in Grand Junction. We talked to a gardener that had access to the Lincoln Highway Museum. So he opened it up for us to poke around. I’ve been studying the history of the Lincoln Highway lately for a coming photo project. It was a great resource and I got plenty of literature on it. Greene County does a phenomenal job with their Lincoln Highway history. In the pictures is one of an original of the Moss Lincoln busts that were vandalized. The gardener told us that they were given the bust as long as they “didn’t ask any questions” about where it came from. Gives me hope that someday Roosevelt’s missing thumb from McHose Park will resurface. An awesome unexpected part of this trip.

I decided to give Hungry Boys Taqueria a try.

I got one of each of their 4 meats: Asada, chicken, Al pastor, and Chorizo.

Two of the tacos were pretty good.

Two of them could have generously been described as “mid”.

They came with zero sauce and zero napkins.

I liked they had a place to take a selfie at.

Of course if there is a funnel cake in the general area you know I’m getting one.

Powdered sugar goodness!

Jay’s first trip up in the bell tower.

I would definitely give Bell Tower Days two thumbs up. I hope to make it again next year on a Saturday. I couldn’t make it happen this year because it was the same day photos were due for the State Fair and it was the day I was picking up Morris to add to my concrete statue menagerie.

As for the tacos? Well, they were okay, but super dry. I don’t think I’d go back, but maybe it isn’t their fault that I found them to be so wanting. Remember that line from FIGHT CLUB?

“After fighting, everything else in your life got the volume turned down. It was beautiful.”

Well that is kind of what street tacos are like after having Rico’s Tacos.

“After Rico’s Tacos, every other taco in you life feels like it got the volume turned down.”

The one obvious exception being the tacos Jorge makes for Taco Tailgate.

As for the funnel cake? It was a perfectly acceptable funnel cake. I would get it again.

Next Sunday’s food adventure will involve hot dogs! Hot dog!
