The Mother Road: Day 5 Snaps

Day 5 began in a hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The hotel was too fancy pants to serve a free breakfast so we just hit the road and saw some of my top Route 66 items right away. The Land of the Giants!

We stopped at a drive-thru prayer station, since it was Sunday and we were missing church.

I finally knocked down my Route 66 cookie from Dairy King.

Another town we stopped at was Stroud. I badly wish we had come through here at night. So much great neon!

We stopped at a restaurant recommended by the prayer station guys.

Diana was the owner. Her mom still makes the pies even though she is in her 90s.

66 Bowl. They have a large collection of old signs.

This sweet thumb tack sculpture marks the halfway point across Oklahoma.

Threatt Station was owned by African Americans and was one of the few spots it was safe for African Americans to stop and eat, get gas, and stay for the night.

It is in the process of being restored.

In Arcadia there is a beautiful round barn. This is the second floor.

It would be a sweet place for a concert or a hoedown!

Pops. No way to sugarcoat it, this was the most disappointing stop on this trip.

It is pimped as this place with tons of soda options. And it does. But I don’t know it had any more than Big Kahuna’s did.

We got our daily ice cream there.

It does have this amazing sculpture outside though!

But once again, it would have been much cooler to see at night!

For supper we ate at the aptly named “Asian Buffet”.

It was pretty good!

That night we stayed at a hotel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It was another night where the air condition really hit the spot. We were good and rested for the last day of Phase 1 of the Route 66 Road Trip. But that is a story for next Sunday.
