Philly Grub: Day 2

Today is Steph’s birthday so I need to wish her a happy birthday!

Happy Birthday!!

Day 2 in Philadelphia ended up being a surprise day off. Usually that is a setup day, but the convention crew didn’t have the Computer Mine booth remotely put together. Yay! Surprise day off!

I started the day with following in the Per Diem Fund:

$512.95

Here are some cell phone pictures from the day:

I had breakfast at the Down Home Diner in the Reading Terminal.

Blueberry pancakes.

I was too far away from Iowa to even risk chocolate milk.

This Pope passed away shortly before I went to Philadelphia.

With the surprise day off we ended up on tour bus. The 1st stop was the Eastern State Penitentiary.

A sculpture that reminds us that the “most free” country in the world is actually the least free.

What it’s like to be in a state where the politicians aren’t weirdly infatuated with other people’s genitalia. It’s nice.

Next stop was the Rocky Steps.

The Liberty Bell.

Ben Franklin’s grave.

Back on the bus.

Back to the Cheesesteak Square. This time for Pat’s.

Next to Cheesesteak Square is the Cannoli King.

My observations:

  • The Down Home Diner was okay. A solid breakfast. Nothing special. It was the only breakfast I got on the trip.
  • With tip, breakfast was $24.07.
  • Geno’s Day 1. Pat’s Day 2. Originally I think I liked Geno’s better, but I really feel if I ate them with my eyes closed I’m not sure I’d tell them apart. We probably shoud have done what Michelle and Kim did which was get both sandwiches and split them on the same night. When I look at the pictures I think I would have like Pat’s better because there was more wiz and bigger onion chunks. But they just aren’t that different to raise a flag for one over the other.
  • Pat’s has the same ridiculous ordering system as Geno’s. Where you order and get your sandwich at one window. The order your drink and fries at an entirely different window. But as I would learn, Philadelphia may be the City of Brotherly Love, but it is definitely the City of Ridiculous Food Ordering.
  • The price for Pat’s was $16.51 for the sandwich and $13.42 for the pop and pizza fries.

After Day 2, the following was left in the Per Diem Fund:

$458.89

Would that last the rest of the trip? The adventure will continue next Sunday!
