College Ames Day Eve

I really wasn’t sure I was going to be able to make it to College Ames Day, so the Friday night before I went over to at least check out the set.

At the time I was walking around the set, ESPN had yet to announce who was going to be the celebrity guest picker. I was still excited by the possibilities. It obviously should have been Seneca Wallace, but he had already been eliminated. Then it was leaked that the celebrity guest picker was going to be a musician.

The no-brainer in that situation would be Corey Taylor. The out of the box pick would’ve been Neil Diamond.

Later that night, we would find out is was some hillbilly bob named Eric Church. I’m not an expert on a new country music, (although I do enjoy and was raised on old-timey music*), but from what I understand is that modern country music is split into 2 categories. Douche country and tolerable country. Florida-Georgia Line is douche country. I don’t know anything by Eric Church, but just by looking at him, he has to be douche country. He looks like Adam Levine, if Adam Levine was an even bigger douche.

Eric Church capitalized on my belief that he is douche country on College Ames Day, but that is a story for a different blog post.

Shimmer

It was a sad day in the Bennett Family. Carla and Jason had to say goodbye to their dog Shimmer.

Shimmer lived with me for about 6 months when Carla and Jason were building there current house, so I had a tight bond with Shimmer.

August 24, 2017

Today I had earmarked for a post on College GameDay being in Ames. However, with today’s passing of Shimmer, I felt it was more apropos to share pictures from the Boone Area Humane Society’s Pet Memorial Day Ceremony.

Pet Memorial Day was actually the Sunday of Pufferbilly Days, but because of Pufferbilly Days the ceremony was moved to last Sunday. Kio had me show up to take pictures.

When a pet dies, it is common for somebody to bring up the poem “The Rainbow Bridge”, but most people (probably me included) think it is just too damn depressing. Instead, let me share a depressing poem by Rudyard Kipling:

Four Feet by Rudyard Kipling

I have done mostly what most men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can’t forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through —
Wherever my road inclined —
Four-feet said, “I am coming with you!”
And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round, —
Which I shall never find —
Somewhere that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind

Farewell Shimmer. You will be missed!

Pufferbilly Westminster

On the Sunday of Pufferbilly Days I was once again tapped to do photography for the Pufferbilly Days Pet Show by Kio.

There was a lot of Bennett to the Pet Show as Logan and Mom were both judges. Teresa also showed Mocha. I’d like to say that the show was a smashing success, but as the 11 AM start time approached, there was only one entry, a cat.

Fortunately, a couple were walking a couple dogs past the Pet Show and I was able to wrangle them into entering the Pet Show. I mean, I couldn’t have a cat win Best Overall. Not that I hate cats. A completely false reputation.

I also was able to talk Teresa into entering and I almost got Carla to enter, but she couldn’t get Chloe there in time.

Here are some pictures from the event:

Selfie Project – August

Now seems like a good time to check-in with my favorite pictures from my August SELFIE PROJECT pictures.

It would seem that I had a successful month of August. I met Vice-President Joe Biden. I competed in a barbecue contest at the Iowa State Fair. I also competed in a photography contest at the Iowa State Fair. I dine at a Brazilian Steakhouse totally not for Jay’s birthday. I went to an air show. I met my great nephew. I went to the Minnesota State Fair. I dined at Zeno’s. I went to an Iowa State football game.

2009-05-10

The pictures in the folder 2009-05-10 are from a Mother’s Day Celebration. I think it is the first family celebration I hosted at my current abode. Might have been one of the last.

I don’t know that I will ever host one again because my house is on the smaller side, but I do have a new grill and a “new” 60 year old dining room table that seats 8.

Here are some pictures:

A Photo Journal – Page 117

I recently went over to my Grandma’s house with my Mom to take a picture for Page 117 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT. I don’t usually explain what the directions for the page before I unleash the picture on the world, but I’m going to explain the theme first this time.

The directions for Page 117 are “Freeze the frame exactly 57 minutes and 32 seconds into your favorite film. Take a picture inspired by what you see.”

I don’t have a favorite film 100%, but I do have at least a handful that I would say are in the conversation. There A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, KING KONG (1933), PSYCHO (1960), MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, and INHERIT THE WIND.

I actually went through all of these movies before deciding on INHERIT THE WIND. I know INHERIT THE WIND, so l’ll explain a big of it.

INHERIT THE WIND was directed by Stanley Kramer. Stanley Kramer was an underrated director who also directed THE DEFIANT ONES, ON THE BEACH, JUDGEMENT AT NUREMBERG, IT’S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD, and GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER.

It is a dramatized telling of the Scopes Monkey Trial. The trial in Tennessee in 1925 where John Scopes was put on trial for teaching evolution.

INHERIT THE WIND stars Spencer Tracy as Henry Drummond, a dramatized version of Clarence Darrow, who was probably the greatest legal mind in our history. Darrow was Scopes’ defense attorney. Frederic March plays Matthew Harrison Brady, a dramatized version of William Jennings Bryan, who ran for president 3 times, and assisted the prosecutors. Gene Kelly played E.K. Hornbeck, a dramaitzed version of H.L. Mencken, who was a brilliant journalist that covered the trial.

The scene that happens right before the scene that is unfolding at 57 minute 32 second mark of the movie is a “prayer meeting” in the park where the local Pastor (who is also the father of the defendant’s girlfriend) preaches damnation for the defendant and his defenders. Brown is the pastor. Rachel is his daughter:

BROWN

Do we call down hellfire on the man who has sinned against
the Word?

ALL

(Roaring)

Yes!

BROWN

(Deliberately shattering the rhythm, to go into a frenzied

prayer , hands clasped together and lifted heavenward)

O Lord of the Tempest and the Thunder! O Lord of Right-
eousness and Wrath! We pray that Thou wilt make a sign
unto us! Strike down this sinner, as Thou didst Thine enemies
of old, in the days of the Pharaohs! (All lean forward, almost
expecting the heavens to open with a thunderbolt . rachel is
white. Brady shifts uncomfortably in his chair; this is pretty
strong stuff, even for him) Let him feel the terror of Thy
sword! For all eternity, let his soul writhe in anguish and
damnation—

RACHEL

No! (She rushes to the platform) No, Father. Don’t pray
to destroy Bertl

BROWN

Lord, we call down the same curse on those who ask grace
for this sinner— though they be blood of my blood, and flesh
of my flesh!

Brady stops him from going on and preaches a more forgiving brand of Christianity:

BRADY

(Rising, grasping brown’s arm)

Reverend Brown, I know it is the great zeal of your faith
which makes you utter this prayer! But it is possible to be overzealous, to destroy that which you hope to save— so that
nothing is left but emptiness, (brown turns) Remember the
wisdom of Solomon in the Book of Proverbs— ( Softly ) “He
that troubleth his own house . . . shall inherit the wind.”
(braby leads brown to a chair, then turns to the townspeople)
The Bible also tells us that God forgives His children. And
we, the Children of God, should forgive each other, (rachel
slips off) My good friends, return to your homes. The bless-
ings of the Lord be with you all.

After this scene Brady and Drummond (who are old friends) are sitting on the front porch of the boarding house where they are both staying. They are discussing the prayer meeting. Drummond describes it as gilded. Glossy on the outside and hollow on the inside he compared it to a toy he wanted as a child:

BRADY

There used to be a mutuality
of understanding and…
admiration between us, Henry.
Why is it, my old friend, that you’ve…
you’ve moved so far away from me

DRUMMOND

Well, all motion is relative, Matt.
Maybe it’s you who have
moved away by standing still.

BRADY

Hmm.
If progress means abandoning God
abandoning the faith of our fathers…

DRUMMOND

I saw a demonstration of that faith tonight.
it’s a pretty deadly instrument, I’d say.

BRADY

What you saw was a reflection
of the violence and hate
in the world around them,
Henry… your world
But they’re driven to it
because their faith was challenged.
These are simple people, Henry, poor people.
they work hard
and they need to believe in something…
something beautiful.
They’re seeking for something
more perfect than what they have

DRUMMOND

Window shopping for heaven.

BRADY

why do you want to take it
away from them, Henry
it’s all they have…
like a golden chalice of hope.

DRUMMOND

Ah.
Like my golden dancer.

BRADY

Your what?

DRUMMOND

Golden dancer.
She stood in the big side window
in the general store in Wakeman, Ohio.
I’d stand out on the street
and say to myself,
“if I had golden dancer, I’d have
everything in the world I ever wanted. ”
I was about 7 years old at the time
and a great judge of rocking horses.
Golden dancer had a bright-red mane,
blue eyes,
and she was gold all over with purple spots.
And when the sun hit her stirrups,
She was a dazzling sight to behold.
But she was a week’s wages for my father,
So golden dancer and I
always had a big plate-glass window
between us.
And then…
Let’s see…
It couldn’t have been Christmas.
It must have been my birthday.
I woke in the morning,
and there was golden dancer
at the foot of my bed.
Mom had skimped on the groceries,
and my father had worked nights for a month.
I jumped into the saddle,
and I started to rock…
and it broke.

BRADY

No

DRUMMOND

Split in 2. The wood was rotten.
The whole thing was put together
with spit and sealing wax.
All shine and no substance,
And that’s how I feel about that
demonstration I saw tonight, Matt…
All glitter and glamour.
You say you’re giving the people hope
I think you’re stealing their hope.

BRADY

Oh no, Henry…

DRUMMOND

As long as the prerequisite
for that shining paradise
is ignorance, bigotry, and hate…
I say, “the hell with it. “

It is this scene of two old friends sitting on a front porch that inspired me to take this picture:

Indianola Balloon Festival – Volume 1

Before we get into pictures from the Indianola Balloon Festival I want to point out that I have been tinkering with the way that the blog comes to the inbox of Photography 139 email subscribers. If you have a gmail email account, you should have noticed the change starting on Tuesday. Rather than getting provided with a link to see the blog post, it should be arriving in your inbox in their entirety. People with other types of email accounts should be seeing this change in the near future as well.

Last year I went to the Indianola Balloon Festival with Carla and my Mom. It was the first time had actually been there and it was pretty cool. It doesn’t look like I’m going to make it there this year, but hopefully make it again in the future. I still have a goal of actually going on a hot air balloon ride at some point.

Dipping back into the 2018 backlog today. There is a one room schoolhouse that has been restored and is occasionally open to the public northwest of Boone. One June day, when we were returning home from our post church meal, Teresa, Logan, Mom, and I stopped to check it out.

Here are a few pictures from it:

Happy Birthday Naima!!!

If you are in possession of a Photography 139 Calendar, you know that today is Naima’s birthday! She will probably be lazing around the house most of the night. But I’ll probably take her on a birthday trip to the park. So if you are going to drop by with birthday gifts and birthday wishes, you might want to call ahead to find out her locations.

She prefers dog treats. She isn’t picky. Could probably use some of the breath freshening dog treats. She isn’t big into chew sticks.

Since it is her birthday, seems like a good time to look at some of my favorite Naima pictures from over the years:

A Photo Journal – Page 109

Ever since the first time I flipped through THE PHOTO JOURNAL and landed on Page 109, I knew exactly where I wanted to take that picture. I flipped flopped on what I wanted the subject to be, but I never waiver on the setting.

It wasn’t until a week or so before I took the photo that I decided on what I wanted the subject to be. I decided the subject should be me.

Occasionally on Wednesdays I shoot over the ISU Surplus Sale. I don’t usually buy anything, (although I occasionally I come home with a gem) but I like to peruse. A week before I finally pulled the trigger on Page 109, I planned on taking this picture. However, after I left the ISU Surplus Sale and headed west on Airport Road to take the image, I found something terrible. The setting had been fenced off. It now required a security code to get there. A security code I didn’t have. It became obvious that Page 109 was going to need a new setting.

Then out of nowhere I got an email that Micky, I, and others were going to take a Computer Mine Field Trip out there. Boom! Plan back on!

While I can only physically adhere one image into the physical A PHOTO JOURNAL, I did take one more photo that I feel like sharing:
