Hello 2023.

It is the first day of 2023. I’m not really a “resolutions” person. Pastor Adam was on vacation today so we had a substitute seromizer in church this morning. He gave an impassioned, longwinded sermon on resolve. It took more than a bit of my resolve to stay awake during the longest sermon these ears have heard in quite sometime.

But if I were to take the words on resolve to heart, I would say that I’m not without goals. Last year my main goal was to complete THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT. I did that.

My main goal in 2023 is to complete Phase 2 of THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT and put the book together. I should be freeing up sometime to work on that buy dropping a couple of photo projects that I did in 2022.

My second goal in 2023 is to begin work and complete my new photo project. Details are still foggy, but it is to create Boone postcard. Not a bunch of Boone postcards. Not even to print up a bunch of one Boone postcard. But to make one big image of one Boone postcard. While the end goal is one image, it will involve taking at least several hundred (probably thousand) images. It will make more sense when I get going on it.

My third goal in 2023 is to keep the positive momentum that was achieved in 2022 in participation rates for THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE. I’m not likely to go out and beat the drums looking for participants, but doesn’t mean you guys can’t. Right?

My fourth goal in 2023 is to consider and maybe take action on visiting and photographing every State Park in Iowa.
That seems more straight forward than it actually is because in addition to State Parks there are State Forests and State Preserves and State Recreation Areas. Boone County contains 3 Minor State Forests alone! We will see where this one goes, but we all know I could use the exercise.

I don’t have any goals related to the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. That type of stuff is a considerable amount of luck. So best not to have goals that are out of one’s hands. Maybe my goal should just be to give my best effort.

Hopefully 2023 is a good year for all of us!

I did enjoy this project and I’m not walking away from it because I didn’t enjoy it. I “met” numerous other people in this community that I will continue to follow, like @bea.photoaday, @sara.fms.photoaday, @outnbout, @gerkgirl, @pink_koffie, and @lostfate13.

But there were other things I didn’t like. Most people used the challenge to curate images, rather than take new images every day. The person that ran the challenge is Australian. That meant that a lot of the prompts were seasonal for Australia, meaning they weren’t seasonal for Iowa. Prompts repeated an awful lot. Not that they wouldn’t after 365 days, but I felt like they repeated more than necessary.

These minor complaints aside, I would consider doing it again in a future year. Just not this year. I’m sure many of you have minor complaints about how I run THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE as well.

Fayette & Winneshiek County Aux – Vol. 2

Today is Christmas Eve. This year I didn’t share any kind of Advent Candle Devotionals. I think it is just part of Christmas sneaking up on me this year. But I better share one. The one for lighting the Christ Candle tonight.

Advent hope moves us; Advent love leads us; Advent joy stirs us; Advent peace stills us, that we might affirm our King Jesus.

It is time we set flame to this Advent affirmation by lighting the Christ Candle.

We believe that Jesus is the Son of God. He was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judea. He was the long-awaited Messiah whose coming was prophesied. The same Jesus lives today in our hearts. He deserves our highest loyalty and total commitment. In Jesus Christ, our hope is fulfilled; our love is consummated; our joy is complete; and our peace is sealed.

Rejoice, a Savior is born.

A savior is born, indeed. Joy to the world!

Merry Christmas Eve everybody!

Time to reveal the May image for the 2023 Photography 139 Calendar:

2023 Calendar - May
May

This image is of the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach, Florida. It is also an image I knew that I was going to process in black and white. I was in Miami Beach for the computer mine and I happened across the memorial sorta by accident. I knew it existed because Tony had brought it up, but I didn’t actually intend to see it. I was walking around the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens that were unfortunately closed and I walked straight into one of the most unique and powerful pieces of art I have ever seen.

May is my birthday month, so I frequently like to put a picture that I don’t think will have a lot of mass appeal, but that I personally love. It is sort of a gift to myself.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is EXPLORE:

WEEK 380 - EXPLORE
EXPLORE

REMINDER: Next Monday is the day after Christmas. It isn’t a holiday per se, but most people don’t work. I don’t work at my day job. I might just go on a road trip that day. What I am saying is plan to get your submission in cause you might not get any kind of reminder.
EXPLORE! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is an EXPLORE picture? Simply put it is a picture taken of somebody that is EXPLOR(E)ing or trying to at least. See Billy’s efforts in the theme reveal image. It can be of something you found when you were out on the EXPLORE. Or it could be a picture of things you use when you are out on the EXPLORE. There are so many possibilities!

Happy photo harvesting!

Time to reveal the April image for the 2023 Photography 139 Calendar:

April

This image of a statue of Jesus crucified on the cross was taken in a cemetery near Stuble, Iowa. It was an image that when I took it that I knew was going to be processed into a black and white image. I placed in April because Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter are all in April. No deeper meaning than that.

WEEK 373 - DECORATION
DECORATION

DECORATION! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what exactly is a DECORATION photo? A DECORATION image is simply a picture of a DECORATION or a picture where a DECORATION plays a heavy element in the composition.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is VIOLET:

WEEK 369 - VIOLET
VIOLET

VIOLET! What a great theme for year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what exactly is a VIOLET photo. It is simply any picture where the color VIOLET (or purple if you will) plays an important part of the composition. It can be a picture of something that is VIOLET. Or it can be surrounded by VIOLET. Heck, you can crack out a VIOLET filter and make everything VIOLET.

Happy photo harvesting!

Fist City

Usually on these Flower Thursdays, if the is more than one type of flower in the pictures, I take the blog title from a Brandi Carlile song title. Then I include some of the lyrics from the song. I point this out because I don’t really point this out. I like to leave as much mystery as I can, but recently I was contacted by somebody that thought that those little tidbits of lyrics were a poem I wrote. I do have a certain amount of writing skills, but poetry isn’t in the arsenal. While I enjoy poetry and have my favorite poets, to write poetry takes a level of vulnerability I’m not will to get to or to show the world. And that is as vulnerable as I’m going to get on the subject.

However, today’s post doesn’t come from a Brandi Carlile song. It comes from a Loretta Lynn song. Everybody knows “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. Most people know “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man”. More people should know “Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind)”. “You Ain’t Woman Enough” is an undeniable classic. I absolutely love “You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”. But “Fist City” is the Loretta Lynn song I don’t think gets enough love and I’ve chosen to highlight here. An absolute banger from the beginning to the end!

It is my small tribute to Loretta Lynn after her recent passing.

You’ve been makin’ your braggs around town
That you’ve been a lovin’ my man
But the man I love
When he picks up trash
He puts it in a garbage can
And that’s what you look like to me
And what I see’s a pitty
You better close you face and stay outta my way
If you don’t wanna go to fist city

If you don’t wanna go to fist city
You better detour around my town
‘Cause I’ll grab a you by the hair a the head
And I’ll lift off of the ground
I’m not a sayin’ my baby’s at saint
‘Cause he ain’t
And that he won’t cat around with a kitty
I’m here to tell you gal to lay off a my man
If you don’t want to go to fist city

Come on and tell me what you told my friends
If you think you’re brave enough
And I’ll show you what a real woman is
Since you think you’re hot stuff
You’ll bite off more than you can chew
If you get to cute or witty
You better move your feet
If you don’t wanna eat
A meal that’s called fist city

If you don’t wanna go to fist city
You better detour around my town
‘Cause I’ll grab a you by the hair a the head
And I’ll lift off of the ground
I’m not a sayin’ my baby’s at saint
‘Cause he ain’t
And that he won’t cat around with a kitty
I’m here to tell you gal to lay off a my man
If you don’t want to go to fist city

I’m here to tell you gal to lay off of my man
If you don’t wanna go to fist city

“But the man I love, when he picks up the trash, he puts it in a garbage can, and that’s what you look like to me.”

OR

“If you get cute or witty, You better move your feet, if you don’t want to eat a meal that’s called fist city.”

Pure poetry to my ears.

However, Thursdays are for flowers. Here are some flower pictures:

Still plenty more flower pictures left to share on future Thursdays, methinks.

Although… one more thing. I do think that any Loretta Lynn tribute would be a failure if it didn’t mention that she was the most radio banned country artist in history. At least 13 of her songs were banned from radio stations here and there. But by far her most banned song was “The Pill”.

I thought I would share the lyrics to a song that got banned from at least 60 radio stations in the 1970s, and many radio stations still won’t play it today.

You wined me and dined me
When I was your girl
Promised if I’d be your wife
You’d show me the world
But all I’ve seen of this old world
Is a bed and a doctor bill
I’m tearin’ down your brooder house
‘Cause now I’ve got the pill

All these years I’ve stayed at home
While you had all your fun
And every year that’s gone by
Another baby’s come
There’s a gonna be some changes made
Right here on nursery hill
You’ve set this chicken your last time
‘Cause now I’ve got the pill

This old maternity dress I’ve got
Is goin’ in the garbage
The clothes I’m wearin’ from now on
Won’t take up so much yardage
Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills
Yeah I’m makin’ up for all those years
Since I’ve got the pill

I’m tired of all your crowin’
How you and your hens play
While holdin’ a couple in my arms
Another’s on the way
This chicken’s done tore up her nest
And I’m ready to make a deal
And ya can’t afford to turn it down
‘Cause you know I’ve got the pill

This incubator is overused
Because you’ve kept it filled
The feelin’ good comes easy now
Since I’ve got the pill
It’s gettin’ dark it’s roostin’ time
Tonight’s too good to be real
Oh, but daddy don’t you worry none
‘Cause mama’s got the pill
Oh, daddy don’t you worry none
‘Cause mama’s got the pill

Amazing that a song that is 50 years old is still so timely.

Iowa State 42 SEMO 10

Last Saturday was the first Iowa State football game of the season. Signifying the beginning of fall and the end of summer. Iowa State bested their FCS opponent 42-10. But I didn’t actually take any pictures of the game. I’m a littlestitious when it comes to taking a camera into the game, so this year I don’t know that I will at all. Perhaps for the Oklahoma game since, they will never sully the confines of Jack Trice Stadium again.

Instead, this year, I’m going to try to take more pre-game pictures. Our parking spot moved again this year. We are now in lot D-1. Last year we were in G-7. That lot is now the RV lot and it is completely unique. No other college football stadium has a lot like it in the entire country. It is setup like campsites with electricity ran to each spot. I don’t have an RV, but you combine that with the fact that the RV lot has easy access to the new pedestrian bridge. Makes me wish I had an RV. Other than, I have no place to park it, they get horrible gas mileage, and I don’t want to drive one. But other than that, sign me up for the RV lifestyle!

The plus about the new parking situation is that we are close to most of the pre-game festivities. The Spirit Walk and The Steps Concert. I didn’t get to either one to get a prime spot to take pictures, but I still took quite a few.

WEEK 365 - GREEN
GREEN

GREEN! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a GREEN image? Are you seriously asking that question? It is an image of something that is GREEN or GREEN plays a major part of the composition. That is it.

Of course, there is more than one definition of the word GREEN.

The pictures in the folder 2011-04-27 are a collection of pictures that have mostly been forgotten by history. They’ve been mostly forgotten by me, but in actuality, they are not without significance. At least as they pertain to the history of Photography 139.

The pictures are from a Young Heroes event put on by the Story County Red Cross. Shannon got me the gig as the “event photographer”. Why this collection of pictures is historically significant is because this event was the impetus for starting the Photography 139 Store/Gallery. The event coordinator wanted a place where people could go buy event photos afterwards. So I had to get something like that going and created my SmugMug Gallery. Click on link below to be taken to that place:

Photography 139 Store/Gallery

That is why you can go there and get virtually and Photography 139 image as a print or a mug or a refrigerator magnet or as a luggage tag or a button or a ceramic tile or did I say print already?

Here are some images from that folder:

By adding these pictures to the Photography 139 Gallery, I was able to restore the following historic “An Artist’s Notebook” entry to its original glory:

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will involve a turkey hunt.

Jesus It’s Me Again

It is time for another collection of flower pictures I took in my Mom’s yard. There are only a few of them this time.
These pictures were taken on August 16, 2021:

My Mom’s house is set to go on the market tomorrow. It is a bittersweet moment, but it is definitely past time that the house becomes a home to a new person or peoples.

Today is Epiphany. And while I haven’t mentioned many holidays recently, Epiphany is the day that I have my Christmas decorations up. Although this Christmas season that consists of decoration a Nativity set in the yard and an outdoor tree that I put lights and decorations I didn’t care if they broke on. Epiphany, if you don’t know, is the celebration of the Magi visiting Jesus as a child. Strictly speaking, it was probably years after Jesus was born. Not the day he was born.

In Eastern Christianity, Epiphany celebrates the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by John the Baptist.

Regardless of how and why Epiphany is celebrated, I thought today’s title was apropos. I don’t know that anybody has figured out where the names for these Thursday posts come from, but they are song titles. Since today celebrates the divinity of Jesus I thought I would share the song lyrics:

Lately Lord, I almost feel like dying
I wake-up like a child alone at night
Sometimes Lord, I just can’t keep from crying
And I can’t find the strength to carry on
Jesus it’s me again
Down on my knees again
Asking you please again
Reach out your hand
Jesus it’s me again
I am on my knees again
Asking you please again
Reach out your hand
Jesus it’s me again
I’m down on my knees
And I’m asking
To reach out your hand
Time to time I try to find a reason
To talk to you a time to before
But this time Lord, it’s more than I can handle
And I know I just can’t take it anymore
Jesus it’s me again
Down on my knees again
Asking you please again
Reach out your hand
Jesus it’s me again
I’m on my knees again
Asking you please again
Reach out your hand
Yes asking you please again
Reach out your hand

The song, while depressing on the surface, is a reminder to me that wherever you are, that is where God will meet you. And how many times should you forgive? Seventy times seven. Which doesn’t mean 490. It means infinite. Infinite forgiveness!
