Tenderloin Appreciation Society – Slater Field Work

Last Sunday, after an emotional church service, Teresa and I went to Luther because I was having a hankering for the tenderloin there and I badly need to get started on the Tenderloin Trail 2.0. As we approached the restaurant, it was clear that is was so packed that there wasn’t anywhere to park. Rather than wait, we soldiered on.

I headed east and then south to Slater. We have often dined at Cole’s in Slater, but I’m efforting to try places that I haven’t supped at before and I have heard promising things about Nite Hawk. That is where we ended up. It was busy, but we were able to get a table right away.

My 5 word review is, they have a really good tenderloin.

Here are some cruddy cell phone pictures:

Here is how I break down the experience:

THE GOOD

+ Good bun.
+ Toasted bun.
+ Good cut of meat. Good thickness.
+ Proper meat to bun ratio.
+ Flavorful breading.
+ Fried mushrooms were divine. The onion rings were also good.
+ Service was really good.

THE BAD

+ Standard is with lettuce and tomatoes, which don’t belong on a tenderloin.
+ The tenderloin doesn’t come with fries or anything standard, so that is an extra cost.
+ Red onions.

THE UGLY

+ Serve Coke products.

I will add that Teresa’s Reuben was also delicious. I had it for supper that night while I watched season 2 of YOU. I really, strongly dislike Love.

I’m not sure when the next tenderloin will come down the chute, but I’m hitting the open road on Sunday with Michelle, so it is certainly possible that it will be soon.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is RELIGION:

WEEK 322 - RELIGION
RELIGION

RELIGION! What a great theme for Year 8 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a RELIGION picture? It is simply a picture of anything relating to the practice of a RELIGION. It can be a book used in the practice of a RELIGION. It can be a building that is used in the practice of a RELIGION. It could be a symbol of a RELIGION. It can be a picture of somebody practicing their RELIGION. So many possibilities!

Happy photo harvesting!

Think on this quote when considering your RELIGION image:

The only clear line I draw these days is this: when my religion tries to come between me and my neighbor, I will choose my neighbor… Jesus never commanded me to love my religion.
-Barbara Brown Taylor

Thinking on that quote will no doubt take you on an interesting path towards your RELIGION photo.

WPC – WEEK 319 – GREEN

REMINDER!!! This week and next week are you chance to help mold the next 52 weeks for THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE. To do that leave suggestions for themes in the COMMENTS section of this here journal entry. There were some good suggestions last week and one truly terrible one. Terrible because it was overly specific about a certain species of animal and not because of my alleged feelings towards that specific species of animal.

GREEN is a pretty gosh dang easy theme, so hopefully there are lots of submissions.

WEEL 320 - HERO
HERO

HERO! What a great theme for Year 8 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a HERO photo? A HERO photo is a picture of somebody that is considered a HERO. Might be a personal HERO of yours. Don’t everybody ask to take my picture at once. Once at a time… Or it can be a picture of a fictional character. It can be somebody you know in everyday life or like in the theme reveal image it can be somebody you have never met. This week is Halloween. I bet you will see all sorts of people out and about dressed like HEROes. That is a happy coincidence, though. The order of the themes were selected randomly last November.

While considering your HERO image, consider the following quote:

You cannot be a hero without being a coward.
– George Bernard Shaw

Good luck capturing your HERO!

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing our idea of HERO in this place that that records many of my personal idols next Monday.

Journal Entry #4,250

Can you believe that this is the 4,250th post in this crazy little thing called “An Artist’s Notebook’. 4,250 posts! It has been 5,549 days since I took keyboard in hand on August 9, 2006 and typed these words:

So here is the first journal entry.

The name of that first journal entry was “First Journal Entry”. I really started out with a bang!

What was that first journal entry?

A set of goals:

+ To write in this journal. Mission accomplished.
+ To be truthful. I’m sure there are some that would disagree, but I’m calling that mission accomplished.
+ To record my achievements and failures in the world of art. Mission accomplished.
+ To produce something that makes me “worthy” of having a pretentious sounding journal title like: “An Artist’s Notebook. Jury might still be out on that one.

In that first entry I also wrote about attending the Photography Salon Reception with Sara. I go on to complain about the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest and tell a tale about how Jay convinced me to enter the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest that year.

That was it. A simple beginning for a simple man. 5,549 days ago.

When I hit these milestones, I like to check in on a few statistics, to see how things are trending. I like statistics cause they seem to bring order to chaos. It is like the saying goes: “There are three types of lies: lies, damn lies and statistics.”

Here are some damn lying statistics.

I use “Categories” to help organize this blog. There are 194 of them and the 100 most used Categories can be found on the sidebar of every page on this website. The 100th most used Category is a 3 way tie amongst “Jaycees”, “Vacation”, and “DaeHee”. I’ve use those 3 Categories 65 times each. The 2 Categories that have the greatest shot at breaking into the Top 100 are “Kelly” at 61 current uses and “Town Sign Project” at 59 current uses.

These are the 10 Most Used Categories (Post 4000 Rank and entries):

10. Art – 408 (NR)
9. WPC – Submissions – 417 (8 – 381)
8. Mom – 422 (10 – 363)
7. Carla – 435 (7 – 391)
6. Portrait – 450 (5 -472)
5. Shannon – 458 (6 – 421)
4. Jesse – 529 (4 – 495)
3. Animals – 665 (3 – 620)
2. Flowers – 754 (2 – 693)
1. Black and White – 819 (1 – 698)

These are the 10 Most Used Not a Person Categories:

10. Photoshop – 368 (8 – 327)
9. Nature – 379 (6 – 349)
8. Macro – 390 (7 – 332)
7. Road Trip – 394 (9 – 326)
6. Art – 408 (10 – 314)
5. WPC – Submissions – 417 (5 – 381)
4. Portrait – 450 – (4 – 472)
3. Animals – 665 – (3 – 620_
2. Flowers – 754 – (2 – 693)
1. Black and White – 819 (1 – 698)

There are the 10 Most Used Person Categories (Post 4000 Rank and entries):

10. Vest – 274 (9 – 258)
9. Jen – 277 (10 – 254)
8. Willy – 278 (8 – 268)
7. Derrick – 311 (7 – 295)
6. Jay – 329 (6 – 320)
5. Teresa – 405 (4 – 364)
4. Mom – 422 (5 – 363)
3. Carla – 435 (3 – 391)
2. Shannon – 458 (2 – 421)
1. Jesse – 529 (1 – 495)

The Non Person Categories most likely to break into the Top Ten are “Naima” at 323, “Formal Portrait” at 320, and “Candid Portrait” at 303.

The Person Categories that are most likely to break into the Top Ten are “Kim” at 263, “Logan” at 248, “Sara” and “Micky” both at 239.

After 750 posts, “Photography”, “Friends”, and “Life” were my three most used Categories. I’ve since tried to de-centralize those Categories and they have fallen. I’m trying to do the same with “Portrait”, so It should eventually fall out of the Top Ten as well.

After 1,000 posts, “Jay”, Jesse”, and “Shannon” were the most used Person Categories.

After 1,500 posts, “Jesse”, “Jay”, and “Shannon” were the most used Person Categories”.

After 2,500 posts, “Jesse, “Teresa”, and “Shannon” were the most used Person Categories. It was the same after 3000 posts.

After 4,000 posts, Top 3 had changed to “Jesse”, “Shannon”, and “Carla”. I’ll be curious to see where these number are in another 250 posts.

If you are wondering how to increase your Category usage, it is simple. Submit to THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE. Be a photo assistant. Show up in THE SELFIE PROJECT. Go on road trips with me. It doesn’t hurt to be related to me either.

But this is a photography online journal, so let’s look at what are the most popular images and galleries on my website?

I have to confess that I haven’t been very good about responding to comments left on my blog lately. I swear that I will get better at this again.

The final statistic I want to share are who my most loyal email subscribers. Loyalty isn’t probably the most accurate term, but it is all I have.

Top Five Most Loyal Photography 139 Subscribers

5. Jeanette Duff – 96.4%
4. Angie DeWaard – 98.5%
2. Michelle Haupt – 99.7%
2. Joe Duff – 99.7%

Jeanette, Angie, and Kio are new to the Top 5. They replaced Corey, Sara, and Shannon.

Linda and Tamara are the two most likely to break into the Top 5 in the next 250 posts.

We’ll have to check in on these statistics again in another 250 posts!

WPC – WEEK 317 – TIME

Need to start today by wishing everybody a Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day and remember F*CK Christopher Columbus. For raping 9 and 10 year old girls. For the murder of 8 million Arawahs, while enslaving them. For cannibalism. For feeding babies to dogs. For using biological weapons to kill 97 million people. Yeah, F*CK Christopher Columbus.

But this day isn’t about reminding people that Christopher Columbus was one of the most evil persons in history and isn’t worth of veneration and should be thought of in the way that people think of Hitler or Stalin or the Confederacy. It is to celebrate the people who first called this land home. To remember the struggles and tragedies they endured. To honor their place in and contributions to the shared story of America.

And for that reason, I share the amazing Navajo prayer Walking in Beauty:

In beauty I walk
With beauty before me I walk
With beauty behind me I walk
With beauty above me I walk
With beauty around me I walk
It has become beauty again
Today I will walk out, today everything negative will leave me
I will be as I was before, I will have a cool breeze over my body.
I will have a light body, I will be happy forever, nothing will hinder me.
I walk with beauty before me. I walk with beauty behind me.
I walk with beauty below me. I walk with beauty above me.
I walk with beauty around me. My words will be beautiful.
In beauty all day long may I walk.
Through the returning seasons, may I walk.
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk.
With dew about my feet, may I walk.
With beauty before me may I walk.
With beauty behind me may I walk.
With beauty below me may I walk.
With beauty above me may I walk.
With beauty all around me may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, living again, may I walk.
My words will be beautiful…

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

WEEK 318 - PASSION
PASSION

PASSION! What a great theme for Year 8 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a PASSION picture? First we need to establish the difference between love and PASSION. What separates PASSION from love isn’t just a warm feeling about something or somebody. PASSION is what you are willing to suffer for. That is why the movie is called THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Because Jesus’ love for us was so intense that he was willing to suffer for us. In the theme reveal picture it shows the result of Jesus’ PASSION for us as he has been lowered from the cross into Mary’s arms. I’m sure there are many things in your life that you love. But this challenge asks you to take a picture of something you love so much that you are willing to suffer for it. Remember though the PASSION in your submission doesn’t have to be your own. It can be somebody else’s PASSION as well.

While considering your options for a PASSION submission, consider the following quote:

It is obvious that we can no more explain a passion to a person who has never experienced it than we can explain light to the blind.
-T.S. Eliot

RULES

Methodist Women’s Rummage Sale

Although there isn’t really a youth group at the church right now, Andy was able to rustle a bunch of kids to help the Methodist Women collect items for their annual rummage sale and help tear things down after it was over. Other than an unfortunate run-in with a douchey member of the Boone Fire Department, every day went really well. I think a few of the kids were happy to be back in the church. Even if it was only a few of them.

TIME! What a great theme for Year 8 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is exactly a TIME photo? In a way, all images are a TIME photo because all pictures record a little slice of TIME that will never ever happen again. Your challenge is to figure out how to capture that slice of TIME. Will you use a quick shutter speed to freeze TIME? Will you use a slow shutter speed to make TIME seem more fluid? Will you be more literal and like the theme reveal image take a picture of a TIME recording device?

While thinking on making your TIME image, meditate on the following quote:

Time flies over us, but leaves its shadow behind.
-Nathaniel Hawthorne

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing our idea of TIME in this place that is little more than a shadow of my time next Monday.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 316 - FLOWER
FLOWER

FLOWER! What a great theme for Year 8 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

You might think it is kind of late in the year for FLOWER, but in my yard I still have moonflowers, asters, marigolds, and zinnias still blooming. And that is just off the top of my head. But the FLOWER you photograph doesn’t have to be living. It doesn’t even have to be real. It can be fake or it can be painting or a sculpture. It can be a seed packet. There are so many options for the creative thinker!

Think on the flower quote when considering your FLOWER image:

In joy and sadness, flowers are our constant friends.
-Unknown
