WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 152 – FEAR

Don’t forget that tomorrow, Baby Got Rack will be competing at the Iowa State Fair Barbecue Competition. We can be found on the grand concourse somewhere. Also, I have 2 pictures on display at the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon in the Cultural Building.

Both are worth supporting, at least I think…

+++++++

I knew that FEAR was one of the toughest themes in this set of 52 themes and the steep drop in participation this week bore that out. I promise that this week’s theme is much, much easier.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates, you came to see the submissions:

WEEK 152 - FEAR - TAMARA PETERSON
Tamara Peterson

WEEK 152 - FEAR -KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 152 - FEAR - TAMARA PETERSON
Tamra Peterson

WEEK 152 - FEAR - ANDY SHARP
Andy Sharp

WEEK 152 - FEAR - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEK 152 - FEAR - SHANNON BARDOLE-FOLEY
Shannon Bardole-Foley

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 153 - ANIMAL
ANIMAL

ANIMAL! What a great theme! An ANIMAL photo is pretty self-explanatory. An ANIMAL photo is any picture that includes an ANIMAL. Or an ANIMAL byproduct.

For anybody that wants to book an appointment to photograph Naima. She charges $500 and hour and she takes frequent breaks.

As always, I look forward to seeing your interpretations!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

+++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very animalistic Monday.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 151 – TREE

REMINDER

NOTE: IF YOU HAVEN’T VOTED YET, VOTE!!! THERE IS A 3 WAY TIE IN 2 CATEGORIES. IN 2 OTHER CATEGORIES, 1 VOTE SEPARATES 1ST AND 2ND. 2 DAYS LEFT TO VOTE.

It is once again time for me (and by me, I mean you guys) to pick out my photos to enter in the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest. Once again, I am going to leave it up to a popular vote.

The Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest allows you to enter up to 6 photos.

There are 4 Categories:

1. Nature
2. Photojournalism
3. Photoshop Enhanced
4. Hidden Treasures of Boone County.

I have selected 60 images for you to consider. To simplify things, I have split the 60 photos into 6 sets of 10. If you wish to exercise your enfranchisement, clicking on the link below will take you to Poll #1. Vote for one of those pictures and then move onto the next poll, until you have voted in all six polls.

The winner of EACH poll will be entered into the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest.

Click on the link below to start voting:

Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest Nominees

Voting will end at midnight, August 8.

TREE seemed to be a theme that motivated several people to get up off their couch and take some photos this week. Maybe I’ll have to keep it around for the next set of 52 themes.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You came to see the submissions:

WEEK 152 - TREE - ANDY SHARP

WEEK 152 - TREE - CATHIE RALEY
Cathie Raley

Christopher D. Bennett

A solid week of submissions!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

FEAR!

FEAR! What a great theme! I know this might come off as one of the harder themes and I admit, it probably is one of the harder themes. Some might argue that it is redundant because earlier int he challenge we had the theme SCARY. Those people are wrong though.

A SCARY photograph challenged you to take a picture of something you find SCARY. Like snakes or spiders or ghosts or the truth.

A FEAR photograph challenges you to take a picture of the reaction to something scary. Like running away from a snake or a spider or a ghost or the truth.

Of course, there is more than one way to skin a community cat… I mean interpret a theme. I look forward to your interpretations.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Congratulations to Jodie Cue! She is the latest person to show taste, class, and sophistication by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. Jodie has one of the hardest jobs in the world. She is a Pastor’s Wife. She also has a job that pays her where she works with kids with special needs. I can stop right there and you get the idea of what kind of an amazing person she is, but I won’t. She works with the middle school students at our church’s youth group, helps teach Sunday School AND started a laundry soap ministry at our church. Laundry detergent is one of the major needs at food banks, (but like female hygiene products) it is something that people just don’t think about when they donate to their local food banks. Our local food bank can barely keep the laundry detergent on the shelf. We are able to make it for for pennies. I’m not sure how many pennies, but pennies!

So if you see Jodie out on the mean streets of Boone, feel free to give her a knowing glance and teach her the super secret Photography 139 handshake.

Welcome aboard Jodie, I know you will fare well!

+++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very fearful Monday.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 150 – FEET

FEET! Almost everybody has them! There was a decent amount of submissions for has to be one of the easier themes in this set of 52 themes.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You came to see the submissions!

So without further adieu, I present the FEET photos:

What is a TREE photo? A TREE photo is any photo that involves a TREE, part of a TREE, or byproducts of a TREE.

There is more than one definition of a TREE, therefore let your imagination be your guide and I look forward to your interpretations!

HANDS was a popular theme! I’ll mark that down and make sure it isn’t in the next set of 52.

Oh, you don’t like that? Then you better get to suggesting themes for the next 52. The way to do that is in the “Comments” section of this here blog.

HUMOR!

HUMOR! What a great theme! But what is a HUMOR photo? A HUMOR photo can be of something that is funny or at least trying to be funny. An example of something that is trying desperately to be funny, but is failing miserably would be a Mike Huckabee tweet. However, it is still an example of humor. Another HUMOR photo would be somebody reacting to something that is funny. I believe the usual reaction is laughter. I don’t know. It is well-documented that I don’t have a sense of humor.

Of course, there is more than one definition of HUMOR. I look forward to your interpretations!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 143 – WORK

WORK, just like in real life, was an extremely unpopular theme. Perhaps it is like Thomas Edison said:

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

A quick reminder that next week I will be in Houston on a mission trip. That does not change the deadline. It just means that I won’t publish next week’s submissions until I return home.

SELF-PORTRAIT

SELF-PORTRAIT! What a great theme!! Now admittedly, not everybody loves their job or has interesting photogenic things happen at their job. Many people also don’t love WORK. But everybody has a self and pretty much everybody has a camera on their cell phone, so this is about as easy as a theme can get!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 142 – RELIGION

Before I get into the participation and the tommyrot and the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE quoting, I want to point out the historical significance of today. Today is the 2 year anniversary of The Great Turtle Race Robbery of 2016!

If you don’t know about The Great Turtle Race Robbery of 2016, let me give you the short, short, short version.

During the football season, me and few fellow computer miners engage in a spirited bit of gambling. The winner each week gets to claim a red solo cup filled with change. Well, maybe not exactly filled, but there is some change in it.

At the end of the season, the person with the most red cups is proclaimed The Witch and they get the travelling trophy. A Franklin Broomworks Children’s Broom.(Incidentally, I agree with Franklin Broomworks and their hardcore child labor policies.) In the event of a tie, the title of Witch gets conferred in a tie-breaking competition that is determined by the people that are not involved in the tie.

In 2016, the tie-breaker was a turtle race.

The 4 people tied for first place were Joe (AKA Flat Earth Joe), Michelle, Cathie, and Humble Narrator. Before our traditional year end banquet at Zeno’s in Marshalltown we congregated at the Colo Outpost of AMOutdoors. What happened next is something conspiracy theorists have been discussing for 2 years now.

But don’t take my word for it, roll this conspiracy’s Zapruder film.

NOTE: If you are an email subscriber to “An Artist’s Notebook and are in the Outlook list, you will have to go to the website to view this atrocity. If you are in the regular distribution list, you already had to come to the website, so this message isn’t for you:

As you can see, the Red Turtle (MY TURTLE), clearly wins this race! Yet inexplicably, the Orange loser turtle is somehow declared the winner. Rigged! I can only speculate at what level the Russians were involved.

That being said, if you are into hunting and fishing, you could do worse than checking out Micky’s hunting and fishing website by clicking on the link below:

AMOUTDOORS

Just don’t trust the guy to run a turtle race. He is as crooked as dog’s hind leg. Depending on the dog, crookeder.

WORK! What a great theme! But what is WORK photography? WORK photography would be a photo of somebody doing their job, at their job, the tools for their job. But WORK doesn’t just happen at a job. WORK can also be done for fun. Like gardening. Or landscaping. Or mowing. Wait, mowing isn’t fun, but it still counts as WORK. Along with doing dishes and dusting.

Do you want your very own Photography 139 like giants in the blog post commentary industry like:

All you have to do is leave a comment on an “An Artist’s Notebook” entry and I will gladly create you your very own Photography 139 avatar!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 POST NOTIFICATION

I’m currently using a post notification plugin called MailPoet. I’m not 100% satisfied with it, but it will stay status quo until I get back from my mission trip to Houston at the end of June. At that time, I will (hopefully) have the free time to play with a couple of different plug-ins.

If you use Outlook to view the post notification emails, let me know and I’ll switch you over to the Outlook subscription group.

Oh wait, that isn’t all I have for today. If you are out and about from 4-7 today, I will be hanging out with the Boone Area Humane Society taking pictures for their booth and mascot at Ericson Public Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff.

If you don’t want to come see me, come to see Hope:

While it is true that Photography 139 doesn’t take holidays, it is also true that Photography 139, okay me, can try to rush stuff together and throw it all together because while they will still post on say Memorial Day, they don’t have all that much time.

This lead me to making a couple of regrettable errors in yesterday’s initial blog posting.

#1 – I mistakenly credited a series of photos to Linda Bennett (my aunt and occasional submitter) instead of Linda Clark. This error has since been corrected.

#2 – Kim Barker submitted 3 photos, but I only posted 1.

A pox upon me for a clumsy lout.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 141 – STORE

Before I get into the business of the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE, I need to point out that today is Memorial Day. Happy Memorial Day. Don’t forget what this day celebrates.

Memorial Day - 2018
Iowa Veterans Cemetery – Van Meter, Iowa

The WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE took its customary holiday hit for participation rates. I also know that STORE is not the most popular theme, even though I enjoy it. However, as we close in on another new set of 52 themes, I would advise you to suggest themes for the next 52 themes. The best way to do that is to leave a comment in the “Comments” section of this here blog.

The only theme suggested for this next 52 has been BREAKFAST by Andy Sharp. Only 51 theme ideas to go!

However, you didn’t come here to talk all tommyrot about participation rates, you came to see the submissions:

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 142 - RELIGION
RELIGION

RELIGION! What a great theme! But what is a RELIGION photo? A RELIGION photo is any photo that involves the practice of religious belief. That could be a religious book, a religious building, religious art, or religious ritual.

As usual, I look forward to seeing your interpretations!

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 WEBMASTER

2 out of the last 3 days and 3 times in the last 30, the publishing of the blog has caused the website to crash. I’m currently working on the matter. Hopefully this post didn’t crash the website. This will possibly lead to a new page being added to the website. We will see.

**************************************

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very religious Monday!
