Selfie Project – March 2022

Tomorrow is the Final Four. Thought it would be a good time to check-in on the Roundball Oracles.

With 3 games left to go in the NCAA tournament this is the Top 3:

1. Becky Parmelee – 231 Points
2. Carla Stensland – 229 Points
3. Angie DeWaard – 224 points

This is the Bottom 3:

34. Joey Randazzo – 143 points
35. Olivia Baier – 141 points
36. Toby Sebring – 140 points

At this point, there are 4 people left that have a chance of taking home the Championship Trophy. 2 people still have a shot at The Sara.

Here are the scenarios for The Sara:

If Villanova beats Kansas then Toby “wins” The Sara.
If Kansas beats Villanova then Joey “wins” The Sara.

Note as Olivia Baier is a child, she is not eligible for The Sara.

Here are the scenarios for the Championship:

If Duke wins the National Championship then Sarah Karber wins the trophy.
If Kansas wins the National Championship then Ben Baier wins the trophy.
If Villanova beats Duke for the National Championship then Becky wins the trophy.
If North Carolina beats Villanova for the National Championship then Becky wins the trophy.
If North Carolina beats Kansas for the National Championship then Ben wins the trophy.
If Villanova beats North Carolina for the National Championship then Derrick Gorshe wins the trophy.

It is possible, that there is an error in my math, but I’m fairly certain this is correct.

Root accordingly.

I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I think I actually did some stuff in March. I didn’t go to Pennsylvania and Illinois (briefly) and North Carolina (briefly), but I did stand in Iowa, South Dakota, and Minnesota all at the same time. I ate the reigning Best Tenderloin in Iowa. I went to two Iowa State NCAA Tournament games. I stood on the highest point in Iowa and the second highest. I hosted Alligator Movie Night. I had some good times with friends and some poignant times with family. March wasn’t too bad. Raised the bar a bit for April.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is FRAMED:

WEEK 342 - FRAMED
FRAMED

But what exactly is a FRAMED picture? It is simply a picture where the subject is FRAMED in by something else. In the theme reveal, the edge of the garbage can makes a frame for the subject of the refuse. A doorway makes a good frame. So does a hall way. A window Any thing that creates negative space makes a great frame for your subject. Or you could even do something as easy as taking a picture of something that is in a literal picture frame.

Happy photo harvesting!

New New

It has been a long time since I bought a new camera. Something like 3 years. I had circled early 2022 as the time to make the move as I am committed to Sony (as it is a family tradition by default)* and their mirrorless system (because it is the best camera system on the market) and the new Sony A7IV was due to come out then.

I ordered it and then waited. I got a tracking number from B&H Photo and saw that it was being shipped by FedEx, the worst of the worst when it comes to shipping companies. I now knew it was like a 50-50 chance I would ever see my camera. Yes, I’m still fuming over the fact that they delivered my bed to the people who live across the street and then east last year. It is not an easy task hauling a bed from all the way down there to my house.

I had the A7IV shipped to the computer mine because based on when it was due to arrive, that is where I would be and if FedEx was delivering to a business instead of a house, maybe there would be a greater chance they wouldn’t mess things up.

On Wednesday, I was mining away. Pick axe in one hand. A warning canary in the other. Then I felt a presence behind me. Kind of an overall aura of greatness. I turned around. Standing behind me was a beautiful woman presenting me with my beautiful new camera. It was the things dreams are made of. The new new had arrived! It was a great day!

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is GOVERNMENT.

WEEK 339 - GOVERNMENT
GOVERNMENT

I’ve already had some great images sent to me from people on vacation in Arizona and Louisiana. And an image sent to me from an employee of Iowa State University.

If you haven’t taken your GOVERNMENT image, here is a refresher on what a GOVERNMENT image might look like…

But what exactly is a GOVERNMENT image? A GOVERNMENT image is anything that involves a GOVERNMENT. There are all types of GOVERNMENT. There is the federal GOVERNMENT. A state GOVERNMENT. A county GOVERNMENT. A local GOVERNMENT. Churches have GOVERNMENT bodies. Every business has some kind of GOVERNMENT. A GOVERNMENT image could be anything that deals with a GOVERNMENT. A public park. GOVERNMENT. The road you drove on to get to that public park. GOVERNMENT. Public school. GOVERNMENT. If you work for the GOVERNMENT, you are the GOVERNMENT. The military, the police, fire department. All GOVERNMENT. Public library. GOVERNMENT. There are so many possibilities!

Happy photo harvesting!

* Technically a Minolta family tradition, but when Sony bought out Minolta they got the Bennetts too!

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is JUNK:

WEEK 334 - JUNK
JUNK

JUNK! What a great theme for Week 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a JUNK image? Simply put, it is any picture that involves JUNK in the composition. It can be as simple as opening up your JUNK drawer and taking a picture. I have at least 5 JUNK drawers in my house and one more in the office. You could got to a local salvage yard. You could go to a local “antique” store. It could be simply a picture of something you don’t like. There are numerous definitions of JUNK and feel free to explore any of those definitions. I think you know the definition I’m talking about.

Happy photo harvesting!

Selfie Project – January 2022

I don’t usually run THE SELFIE PROJECT in back to back years, but since I took a break from it for a bit in 2021, I decided to make an exception and bring it back in 2022.

Before getting into my favorite images from January of 2022, I want to put a bow on 2021.

Here is a photomosaic made out of THE SELFIE PROJECT images of 2021.

2021 Selfie Project Mosaic

The base image was taken on January 1, 2022. All the images that make it up were taken in 2021. I don’t think I need to point out the symbolism of the image, but I will. The image was created because because the person standing there on January 1, 2022 was created by all the experiences (bad and terrible and godawful and a few that were good) that I went through in 2021. As with all mosaics, the further away you get, the easier it is to see the base image. You can also click on the image to see it larger.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is #LOVE.

WEEK 333 - LOVE
#LOVE

But what is a #LOVE photo you may be asking? It is simply a picture that you would #LOVE on Instagram. It can be a picture that depicts #LOVE or it could simply be a picture of something you #LOVE. And the thing you love can be as simple as “Man, I really love these cheesy gordita crunch!” Snap. Post. #LOVE. Although in fairness, everything from Taco Bell is gross and if you love one of those, you might have serious psychological issues. But like I said, here at Photography 139 love is love and #LOVE IS #LOVE.

If you are person that has been through some stuff, and there is a burned out husk where your heart used to be, I got you. Think on these kinds of #LOVE:

+ Philia – affectionate love. A love that runs deep in true friendships.
+ Pragma – enduring love. Mature love that develops over time.
+ Storge – familiar love. Love between parents and children or childhood friends and siblings.
+ Eros – romantic love. Infatuation and physical pleasure.
+ Ludus – playful love. Flirting and beginning stages of intimate love.
+ Mania – obsessive love. Obsessiveness or madness over a love partner. This might be called stalking these days.
+ Philautia – self love. Having a healthy self-compassion love towards one’s self.
+ Agape – selfless love. An empathetic attitude of love for everyone and anyone. Also describes God’s infinite, unconditional love.

You find just one of these types of love, or a disgusting cheesy gordita crunch, and you’re photo harvesting will go just fine.

WPC – WEEK 332 – TRIANGLE

So far TRIANGLE has been a fairly popular theme. In fact, it was a record setting theme! More on that later.

Very impressive! 28 submissions from 22 participants! I think the 22 participants might be a new THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE record! Only two streaks were snapped. Mike Vest’s “streak” of 1 week did not extend to 2 weeks. Dawn Krause’s streak of 5 weeks ends at 5.

The three longest streaks remained intact and Elizabeth joined the world of double digit streaks.

Here are the top streaks:

#1. Kio – 15 weeks
#2. Kim – 12 weeks
#2. Shannon – 12 weeks
#4. Elizabeth – 10 weeks

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 333 - LOVE
#LOVE

#LOVE! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a #LOVE image. What is #LOVE? #LOVE is the most popular hashtag on Instagram. Instagram has more than 1 billion users that use the app every month. It is the second most downloaded free app. The average Instagram user browses images 53 minutes a day. Instagram is used by 25% of smartphone users. The first ever photo posted to Instagram was of a dog (duh!) near a taco stand (double duh!), taken by a Instagram founder. As I write this, #LOVE has been used 2,147,483,647 times on Instagram. That is billion with a b.

Now if you read all that, and you were like, great, but what is a hashtag? Sigh.

A hashtag is a label used on social media sites that makes it easier to find information with a theme or specific content. Hashtags encourage social media users to explore content that catches their eye. Associations can use hashtags to reach their target audience and to help members filter information.

But for our purpose here, you don’t need to worry about a hashtag. The hashtag is merely the inspiration for this week’s theme. When you are considering your subjects, think, would it be something that somebody could hashtag it with LOVE? The subject could be something that you #LOVE, or it could be something that represents #LOVE to you. Whatever trips your heartstrings. I’m not here to judge. Love is love and #LOVE is #LOVE too.

While considering your possible subjects, think on the following quote and I know you will take a great #LOVE image:

Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.
-Zora Neale Hurston

I look forward to your interpretations!

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is BLACK + WHITE:

WEEK 330 - BLACK + WHITE

BLACK + WHITE! What a great theme to kick off Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

To know me at all, is to know that my first love in photography is always been BLACK + WHITE. But what is BLACK + WHITE photo? Well, the obvious answer is that it simply a picture that is monochrome. Not color. But BLACK + WHITE. However, there are some things to know about taking a good BLACK + WHITE picture. Once you remove color from an image, you can’t rely on color to provide interest. Here are things to think about to make a good BLACK + WHITE image:

+ Shape and Form – The shapes of things will be more dominant.
+ Contrast – Without colors to separate your subjects, you will need the contrast between BLACK + WHITE to separate the objects in the picture.
+ Texture – A good subject in BLACK + WHITE photography will have texture. Texture really pops.

Happy photo harvesting!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

While considering possible subjects for your BLACK + WHITE picture, consider this quote by Ansel Adams:

“Our lives at times seem a study in contrast… love & hate, birth & death, right & wrong… everything seen in absolutes of black & white. Too often we are not aware that it is the shades of grey that add depth & meaning to the starkness of those extremes.”
-Ansel Adams
