WPC – WEEK 219 – SHADOW

Running just a tad bit behind schedule today. As I am on vacation and my motivation levels might not be what they normally are. Fortunately, for the 9th straight week, motivation levels were high enough that we had double digit submissions. Perhaps a record. I don’t know. I’ll have to check with the Photography 139 historian.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates, you came to see the submissions:

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 220- COLORFUL
COLORFUL

COLORFUL! What a great theme! But what is a COLORFUL photo? That is pretty straight forward. Any photo that is filled with COLOR. Find something COLORFUL and photograph it. Go crazy with the saturation in your photo editing. Remember, there is more than one definition of the term COLORFUL.

I look forward to seeing your interpretations.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date.

OR

I now allow people to text me their submissions. In the past, I had made exceptions for a couple people that aren’t real computer savvy, even though it was an inconvenience for me and required at least 3 extra steps for me. I am now lifting that embargo because I have a streamline way of uploading photos. I’m not giving out my phone number, but if you have it, you can text me.

It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

+++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very colorful Monday!

Howards 2018 – Volume 3

Here is the final collection of images from the 2018 Howards Photo Shoot that took place at some golf course that is like 3 blocks from my house.

Howards 2018 – Volume 2

Another dip into the cool refreshing waters of the 2018 backlog. This time, a second collection of pictures from the 2018 Howard Family Shoot.

Dogface

Here is another post from the 2018 backlog. These are mostly pictures of Naima. I think they might have been alternates for the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme the week they were taken. I’m not entirely sure and I’m not up to that level of soul searching and research.

There is still more in the 2018 backlog, but it is getting smaller every day. Well maybe not every day.

2009-07-06

The pictures in the folder 2009-07-06 are from my 2009 Independence Day. I spent the day immersed in Ames Jaycees projects.

The beginning of my day was spent helping with the special Independence Day Ames on the Half Shell with The Nadas. Then I finished the day helping out with the fireworks display.

Shannon’s cousin Matthew came down to help with Half Shell. Teresa helped as well. Logan and Willy were in attendance at the concert.

It was a very long day. Now I barely even leave my house on Independence Day. I should probably remedy that in 2020, but I’m guessing that won’t happen.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the album:

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will involve my favorite artist to every play Ames on the Half Shell.

Howards 2018 – Volume 1

Last year I had the great pleasure of taking the Howard family portrait. This time, we took the photos at the Boone golf course. I’m sure it has a name, but it is lost on me. It is a couple blocks from my house, but while I am aged, I haven’t descended into a state of decay where golf is an activity that would appeal to me. At least not yet. Maybe in a couple more years.

Here are is a first look at some of my favorites from the first collection of images:

It has been over a year since we took those pictures. In the time that has passed, Taylan’s boyfriend has been dumped. Given his walking papers. Kicked to the curb. Dropped. Discarded. Thrown out. Chucked.

There are still plenty of Howard pictures in the hopper!

President Quest 2020 – Pete Buttigieg – Volume 2

Last Friday I published pictures of when I saw Pete Buttigieg speak at the Iowa State Fair. It was the best place to hear somebody speak, so I decided to see him again.

A few weeks back he came to speak at the Farm Expo Grounds near Boone. It was a cold, rainy, Sunday morning, but I made my way out there with Jesse to see him speak.

Here are some pictures:

Buttigieg was one of the most impressive candidates I’ve seen to date. I was legitimately surprised how impressive he was. His eloquence. His master of issues. It was all very impressive. You can tell that he was a Rhodes Scholar. He was the first candidate I saw that dramatically moved the needle for me.

But I’m very far from committing to one candidate at this time.

This is your reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is FORMAL PORTRAIT:

A FORMAL PORTRAIT is a PORTRAIT where the subject knows that they are being photographed and pose for the picture.

First of all, Happy Halloween! After a 1 year hiatus, I’ll be able to handout candy to trick-or-treaters. Which also means, I will be able to replenish the candy bar selection in the Union Street Theater. It has gotten pretty bad, since I didn’t buy any candy last year. I think all that is in the candy bucket is candy Nora got at the 2018 Pufferbilly Days Parade. Which, wasn’t the good stuff.

I do need to replenish the candy supply down there because I’m expecting a big crowd for November Movie Night. November Movie Night will be a Godzilla double feature. Celebrating Criterion’s recent release of all 15 Showa Godzilla movies in a sweet boxed set. In fact, it is the sweetest boxed set ever released in the history of boxed sets. However, I will get into that in the future, because there will certainly be several Godzilla blogs in the future as I crack into the boxed set.

But this is Halloween, therefore I need to release my annual candy bar power rankings!

2019 CANDY BAR POWER RANKINGS

10. Payday
9. Rolo
8. Kit Kat
7. Skor
6. Take 5
5. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
4. Snickers
3. Twix Caramel
2. Peanut M&M’s
1. Whatchamacallit

Please respect my decision. No interviews at this time.

But in case you were wondering, the worst candy bars. The ones you will not be seeing me handing out tonight while watching my 4K copy of THE SHINING… Milky Way and Three Musketeers.

But enough candy, how would you like to see some sky pictures:

Tommy, Can You Hear Me?

Once gain, hitting up that sweet, sweet 2018 backlog. Back in September I went to see and ride Thomas the Tank with Bethany, Nora, and Bethany’s friend Harvey and her kids.

I frequently go down to the Boone Scenic Valley Railroad when Thomas is in town, but this was my first experience riding Thomas.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the day:

I’m not a parent, but I think that bringing kids over to see Thomas is a pretty good deal. While riding Thomas might be something of a rip-off, there is plenty of other things to do there for free. Riding Thomas also gets you a free ride on the trolley, so that makes it a little bit less of a rip-off.

Anyways, Nora loved it!
