A PHOTO JOURNAL – HENRY CARROLL – PAGE 77

It is your reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is HOBBIES.

A HOBBIES photo is any photo of somebody engaging in HOBBIES. A photo of tools used in HOBBIES. The results of HOBBIES.

WEEK 156 - HOBBIES

Happy photo harvesting!

When I heard that their were going to be pig races at the Boone County Fair, I was instantly 78% more excited for the Boone County Fair. Some people were psyched for the alcohol. I was psyched for the pig races. It is the reason that I sometimes don’t fit in and do fit in with the fine people of Boone, Iowa.

I knew that pig races would be a perfect addition to THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT. I just wasn’t sure which page. Then it dawned on me. Page 77.

Photo Journal - Page 77
Page 77 – Instill a powerful sense of narrative in your picture.

I did enjoy the pig races even more than I anticipated. I was sad that there were only 4 races with a swimming pig thrown in the middle. It did make me day dream about quitting the computer mine. Buying the finest stable of racing pigs this side of the Mississippi, and going out and entertaining the young and young at heart at fairs and small town festivals all over the continental United States and maybe parts of Canada.

I just need an financial backer. About a million dollars would probably get us up and running*.

While only 1 picture can be physically adhered into the physical A PHOTO JOURNAL, I did take several pig pictures that are worthy of sharing. Have a look:

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 155 – CANDID PORTRAIT

Participation for CANDID PORTRAIT took the usual holiday drop off, but there were still a few people loyal enough to the cause that made it worth the effort.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You came to see the submissions:

Not a bad week of submissions, considering the holiday!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

HOBBIES (SUGGESTED BY DAE HEE YOON)

HOBBIES! What a great theme! But what is a HOBBIES photo?

A HOBBIES photo is any photo that involves somebody engaging in their HOBBIES. The results of their HOBBIES. Or tools used in their HOBBIES. There are all sorts of HOBBIES! From collecting things to making things to doing things. HOBBIES are things you do because it is a passion (the thing you are willing to suffer for) and not because somebody is paying you to do it. For examples one of my many HOBBIES is berating the open-faced sandwich. They know why.

This is the final theme for this set of 52 themes. Next Monday I will reveal the first theme is the next set of 52. I was going to reveal what all 52 themes are so you could day dream about them while you are at your occupations, but instead I’ll just let them come out as they come out. So you can think about them feverishly at your occupations.

I look forward to seeing your interpretations.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very hobbied Monday.

It is your weekly reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is CANDID PORTRAIT.

A great theme! One of the best ever! But what is a CANDID PORTRAIT? A CANDID PORTRAIT is a portrait where the subject isn’t posed. They probably don’t even know that they are being photographed.

A few weeks back at FNSC Jay stopped by to enjoy the firetub. I found it a perfect time to knock out Page 118 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Photo Journal - Page 118
Page 118 – Sit opposite someone for two hours. Chat, have a cuppa, but only take pictures when you see something revealing.

Let’s face it. My friends aren’t the sit and “have a cuppa” type of people. But we do like fire. Almost to a fault. But we don’t want to talk about that.

Only one picture can be physically adhered into the physical THE PHOTO JOURNAL. However, I did take a couple more Page 118 photos I think are worth sharing:

Franconia: Part II

One photo from last week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE came in late, but I thought I would share it anyways.

The picture below was submitted by Logan. It was taken at Vinton’s fireworks competition.

I only have 3 car payments left. While it isn’t a ton of money that I will be not have to lay out every month, I have spent it over and over and over in my head. One of those things i think about buying is a piece of art for the yard. I think that lizard would like great in my yard.

There is one more collection of photos from Franconia next Tuesday.

WEEK 155 - CANDID PORTRAIT
CANDID PORTRAIT!

CANDID PORTRAIT! What a great theme! What does it mean? A candid portrait is one where the subject is unaware that a photo has been taken. The idea of a candid portrait is to capture people acting naturally. They should be unaware they are being photographed, as their behavior often changes once they become aware of the camera.

Remember! Next Monday is Labor Day. While the bank, your job, and the government might take that day off, Photography 139 does not! Plan on submitting your photo accordingly. No rest for the wicked! Money don’t grow on trees. I got bills to pay. I got mouths to feed. There ain’t nothing in this world for free. Oh no, I can’t slow down. I can’t hold back. Though you know, I wish I could. Oh no, there ain’t no rest for the wicked.

A few weeks back, Ernie was in town visiting Teresa. I felt he would be a good subject for Page 52 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Photo Journal - Page 52
Page 52 – Capture someone’s subconscious.

The idea of this picture was thus:

“By giving your subject something to do they become less aware of the act of being photographed.”

Ernie is playing solitaire. I setup my camera on a tripod and triggered the camera with my phone, while I was pretending to look for something on my storage shelves. Hopefully Ernie didn’t realize I was taking the pictures. I told him the purpose of the project after the photo shoot. When I told him we were done, he did seem a bit surprised.

My one regret is that I didn’t give him a toothpick. It looks like he could have used a toothpick to chew on.

Here are a couple of other photos from the photo shoot:

I’m not sure what page we will hit up the next time that we hit up THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT. I have about 4 or 5 of these done and ready to roll. I mean they aren’t edited yet, but I’ve taken the pictures.

I’m trying to include as many different people as possible in this project. If you’re looking to volunteer, you know where to find me. Right now, I could use a person that does yoga.

Incidentally, part of the reason that Ernie was back was to help get Teresa’s house on the market. Click on the link below to see’s Teresa’s real estate listing:

Boneyard Hollow

Back in July (of 2017) I made a quick little road trip up to Dolliver Memorial State Park. I did a little hiking around the Boneyard Hollow part of the park.

I wouldn’t say Dolliver is one of my favorite parks in Iowa, but it has some interesting facets. Check out this info that I lifted straight from the DNR website:

Copperas Beds

A unique facet of the sandstone formations at Dolliver are the “Copperas beds.” The towering 100-foot bluff on Prairie Creek is a cross-sectional view of the ancient river bed that is over 150 million years old. Over the ages, the erosive power of Prairie Creek uncovered this unique feature. The porous nature of the sandstone has caused many minerals such as calcite and sulfur to dissolve as the water seeps through. As the water evaporates, the mineral deposits are left behind. You can see many of these deposits in the sandstone cliffs, as well as petrified logs and sticks.

“Boneyard Hollow”

This narrow ravine running between rock walls was given its name “boneyard hollow” by early settlers who found large amounts of buffalo bones in the canyon. It is possible the area’s first inhabitants drove herds of buffalo from the prairie over the cliff to their death or perhaps drove the herds into the narrow ravine and then killed & butchered them for their meat, hides, horns & bone.

In 1912, a family picnicking in the area of the creek that runs through Boneyard Hollow found a lead tablet at the mouth of the creek. Inscribed in Latin, it stated that it was deposited in 1701 by Father Hennepin, a French explorer, often credited with discovering the Des Moines River. The tablet was eventually found to be a hoax, planted by people from the nearby community. However, Edgar Harlan, then curator of the state archives, went to the site where the tablet was found. His interest in the beauty of the area helped spark the state’s interest in eventually purchasing the park.

I went back and forth on whether or not I was going to publish these pictures because at first glance, I didn’t really like them. But I finally bit the bullet and started editing them and found out that there are a few I actually like… a lot.

Here are some pictures from my trip to Dolliver:

When I was editing, I was thinking, “When I write the journal entry up to go with these pictures, I’m going to really lay into that Glen Bickford for being such an insufferable doucher that he needed to carve his name into what is an otherwise fairly pristine rock face.”

But as I have thought about it, I’ve decided to give Glen Bickford of Corning, Iowa – Class of ’14* the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he isn’t an insufferable doucher that needs to destroy natural beauty because he is so insecure with his talents and work ethic that he thinks destroying natural beauty with his moniker is the only way to secure his legacy. Maybe Glen Bickford was killed in a car accident and this is the way his best friend memorializes him. Crossing all over the state, defacing nature’s beauty because it is the only way his friend can deal with the grief and the guilt. After all, it was Glen Bickford’s best friend who made him go to that party that night, when Glen just wanted to go home and study for that calculus test. He needed to get an A in that class if he had any shot at a scholarship. Glen Bickford eventually relented to Glen Bickford’s best friend’s peer pressure and then he had a few to take the edge off. You know how it is. Heck, you know the rest of the story. It is all too common. A night that ends in an alcohol haze and torn metal and broken glass strewn across a country road. Glen Bickford’s best friend only felt alive again as he was giving Glen Bickford a form of immortality. The only form of immortality that he knew.

I mean, it is possible.

There are a few other state parks I want to hit this year. I’m thinking of taking a Friday off from working and heading to Pike’s Peak. Seems like that would make a good trip.

*Obviously a lot of assumptions are being made here.

It could be people preparing for competition, like practice or working out. People don’t just compete against other people. They compete against time. They compete against themselves. Humans aren’t the only beings to compete either.

The Howards: 2016 – Chapter 1

By the time this gets published, I’ll probably be making the trudge up Expo Hill towards the Cultural Building to pick up my photos from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon.

If you didn’t get a chance to duck into the Cultural Building to check out my photos, that is fine. That is dandy. Here are the 4 pictures I entered. 2 were accepted for display. 2 were not.

2 pictures for display was a solid showing. You never know what the judges will like. I was surprised that Willy’s eye was selected for display. I thought of the 4, it had the worst chance to make it. I guess you never know.

A few statistics from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon:

1018 Photographers Entered
3201 Photographs Entered
Photographers from 20 other states entered
863 Adults Entered
466 of adults who entered have at least one photograph on display
27% of the photos entered were exhibited

I should start planning for next year, but that hasn’t really been my style, yet.
