Celestial Dome

First of all, Happy Halloween! After a 1 year hiatus, I’ll be able to handout candy to trick-or-treaters. Which also means, I will be able to replenish the candy bar selection in the Union Street Theater. It has gotten pretty bad, since I didn’t buy any candy last year. I think all that is in the candy bucket is candy Nora got at the 2018 Pufferbilly Days Parade. Which, wasn’t the good stuff.

I do need to replenish the candy supply down there because I’m expecting a big crowd for November Movie Night. November Movie Night will be a Godzilla double feature. Celebrating Criterion’s recent release of all 15 Showa Godzilla movies in a sweet boxed set. In fact, it is the sweetest boxed set ever released in the history of boxed sets. However, I will get into that in the future, because there will certainly be several Godzilla blogs in the future as I crack into the boxed set.

But this is Halloween, therefore I need to release my annual candy bar power rankings!

2019 CANDY BAR POWER RANKINGS

10. Payday
9. Rolo
8. Kit Kat
7. Skor
6. Take 5
5. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
4. Snickers
3. Twix Caramel
2. Peanut M&M’s
1. Whatchamacallit

Please respect my decision. No interviews at this time.

But in case you were wondering, the worst candy bars. The ones you will not be seeing me handing out tonight while watching my 4K copy of THE SHINING… Milky Way and Three Musketeers.

But enough candy, how would you like to see some sky pictures:

  1. I’ve spent years and countless hours researching this to make this list perfect. It is a perfect list.

    So bring the heat, coward!

  2. Right, I totally get that. But there’s no world in which the unsatisfying and tooth-breaking crunch of a Skor bar is preferable to the immeasurably lighter, easier to eat, and more manageable Kit Kat. Twix Caramel needs to be even higher on the list due to the enjoyable nature of the bite sensation, both for initial bite and when chewing. A Butterfinger is a far more preferable sticky-tooth experience than a Skor, IMO. I’d also trade out the just-okay Rolos for a 100 Grand Bar, which combines the caramel deliciousness with some crunchy texture.

I will wholeheartedly bash on Three Musketeers and Milky Way with you, however. Talk about one-note.

  3. I could have put Skor or Heath on their to represent toffee, but I think Skor has a little more bit to it.

There isn’t much redeeming to say about Butterfinger. It is either way to hard to bite into or if it has gotten old is a big ball of moosh and feels like you are eating throw up.

I considered the 100 Grand Bar, but I once again think it is too mushy. I think it is almost there.

Twix Caramel is real close to being by #2. Peanut M&M’s and Twix Caramel are really more like 2A and 2B. But there is a pretty big gap between them and Whatchamacallit for me. It is tragic that they don’t release it in the min bar form so I can hand it out to trick-or-treaters. Although based on the low amount of trick-or-treaters, I could probably hand out full sized. candy bars.

  4. I don’t *dislike* toffee, I just feel it is better in a smaller form (like toffee chips), or relegated to a minor ingredient. It’s just not satisfying. If I was starving and only had a candy bar at my disposal to eat, I think toffee would be the worst at making me feel like I just ate anything worthwhile.

You DO have to get Butterfinger at its sweet spot – when it was at its best was in the mid-90s when they had the Butterfinger BBs. It had a better crisp-to-chocolate ratio, and I think the amounts of chocolate kept it from getting mooshy or hard. But when it’s good, it’s so worth it.

I do enjoy Whatchamacallit, but it’s (similarly to a 100 Grand) more of a “rare treat” candy bar for me. Similarly to Take 5 – there’s a lot going on in there, and sometimes I just want something simpler. For example – a Hershey’s bar with almonds very much has its time and place!

Peanut M&Ms are the best of all M&Ms. As much as I love Nutella, the Hazelnut ones were an abomination.

We only got around 30 trick-or-treaters last night at the new house… which I think is the same amount we got in all of our years combined at our previous house. I fear Trunk or Treat events are making kids soft.
