25 participants. Not a great week. But not a bad week.

A couple things to note. Logan hit the half a year club with his streak. Shannon set a new record for the picture submitted that was taken the farthest north. Her pictures were taken north of the Arctic Circle! I received pictures from Alaska, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and Kansas. Many of those are assumptions.

It wasn’t all good news. Sara and Becky’s steaks went kaput at 1 week. Willy’s was shot down after 4 weeks.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 367 - SIGNS
SIGNS

SIGNS! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE.

But what is a SIGNS photo? Quite simply is is a photo of a SIGN(s) or of SIGNS. SIGNS. SIGNS. There are SIGNS everywhere. Messing up the scenery. Breaking my mind. Do this, don’t do that. Can’t you read the SIGN(s)?

But one thing you should definitely do is find an interesting SIGN(s) and photograph it in an interesting manner. Of course there is more than one definition of the term SIGNS.

While considering your possible subjects for your picture, meditate on the following quote:

The very contradictions in my life are in some ways signs of God’s mercy to me.
-Thomas Merton

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of SIGNS in this place where I show many alarming signs next Monday.

WPC – WEEK 365 – GREEN

28 participants this week! That is a great week! A slight dip from the last couple weeks, but that is okay. The ebb and flows.

Sabas and Monica both joined the double digit streak club! WooHoo! Congrats!

There were submissions from all over the globe this week. Submissions came from France, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, California and Alaska. I believe the picture from Alaska is the farthest north I’ve ever had a submission come from. France is pretty far east, but I think I’ve had submissions from Italy before. I don’t know what is the farthest west or farthest south off the top of my head. I think there might have been some Caribbean island pictures in the past that are the farthest south. Possibly the Alaska picture is also the farthest west too. I know people that have been in Hawai’i, but I don’t think they have submitted from there. Then you get to a point where, what is east and what is west. Some of those states are assumptions based on where people live.

I took my picture about 1 mile from my front door.

The Alaska picture, if you are wondering, is Shannon’s. I better you can figure out the pictures from France on your own.

But it wasn’t all sunshine and flowers and Iowa State beating Iowa in soccer. AND volleyball. AND football. There was some bad news. Derrick, Evie, Sarah Karber, and Steve couldn’t extend their streak past 1 week.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 366 - PATHS
PATHS

PATHS! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

WARNING! WARNING! NEXT MONDAY I WILL NOT BE NEAR A COMPUTER DURING THE MORNING! THEREFORE, THERE WILL DEFINITELY BE NO REMINDER MESSAGES NEXT WEEK! YOU WILL BE ON YOUR OWN TO GET YOUR SUBMISSIONS IN!

But what is a PATHS image? It is simply an image where a PATH(S) is a major compositional element. Lots of things can qualify as a PATH(S). A sidewalk. A trail. A street. Railroad tracks. A PATH(S) doesn’t just show where somebody or something is going, but can also show where they have been.

While considering possible subjects for your image, mediate on the following quote:

If the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads.
-Anatole France

I look forwarding to seeing your interpretation.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of PATHS in this place that is my trail through the wilderness of life next Monday.

30 participants this week! That is a great week! Hopefully we can start averaging 30 participants for a bit!

This is just guess work, but I believe we got submissions from Pennsylvania, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and California this week. It is possible that people travelled away from their homes and I just don’t know it. My picture was taken about 15 miles from my front door.

Got the first every submission from Steve Martin! That is exciting! Plus Sarah Karber and Derrick and Evie both submitted for the first time in a bit!

It wasn’t all good news though. Becky couldn’t extend her streak to two weeks and Sara Lockner’s 2 week streak is history as well.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 365 - GREEN
GREEN

GREEN! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a GREEN image? Are you seriously asking that question? It is an image of something that is GREEN or GREEN plays a major part of the composition. There are at least a few pictures here that would also have been great submissions for GREEN. Sarah Karber’s and Monica’s come to mind.

Of course there is more than one definition of the word GREEN. Just find a Dave Matthews fan. They will help you out. (For the record marijuana should be legalized and taxed. And so should churches. Be taxed that is.)

While considering possible subjects for your GREEN image, meditate on the following quote and I have no doubt something great will come to you.

An optimist is a person who sees a green light everywhere, while a pessimist sees only the red stoplight… the truly wise person is colorblind.
-Albert Schweitzer

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of GREEN in this place that is many types of green to me, just not the environmentalist type of green next Monday.

WPC – WEEK 363 – CIRCLE

It looks like there might some more new participants in the pipeline, so probably a good time to review the FAQ:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is there a limit to the number of submissions I can have each week?

The short answer is, “no”. Some people think that there is a limit of one submission per person because I only present one submission a week, personally. I have the other 6 days to post my photography. So one is more than enough image from me.

However, the longer answer is, 3 would be a good guide to limit yourself to submit. It isn’t a rule, but much over 3 begins to start to overwhelm the submissions of the others in the community. Also, if you are submitting multiple submissions, think about your submissions. Are they unique? Are they of wholly different subjects? Is each submission saying something unique?

The long answer is, there isn’t a limit, but 3 is a good rule of thumb. If I start to average about 30 participants a week, I will consider putting a limit of 1 per participant, to help manage my workload, but we are a long ways from averaging 30 participants a week.

Can I send you several pictures and have you pick the best one?

No! No! NO! If those words come out of your mouth or your keyboard, I consider that to be a non-submission.

Do you ever question whether somebody’s submission fits the theme?

Meh. Only if I think somebody is clearly confusing this week’s theme with last week or next week’s theme. Otherwise, if the submission makes sense in your head, that is good enough to me. However, I would urge you to not try to fit your favorite subject into the theme. This isn’t a challenge to share a picture every week of your kid or your business or your pet. It is a challenge to take pictures of different things every week. Which isn’t to say subjects can’t be repeated, but you shouldn’t become reliant on the same ones.

Why can’t I submit after 11 AM on Mondays if the post doesn’t publish until 12:01 PM?

I go to lunch at 11 AM. I leave my office. I’m not near a computer. At 11 AM I hit “Schedule” and then I go throw food down my throat. 167 hours is more than enough time to send a submission. Okay, 166 hours and 59 minutes. You got me.

Are there resolution requirements for submissions?

I won’t turn down submissions that are too small. I will probably ask you for a picture of greater resolution if it is really small. The typical 4 x 6 image posted to my website has a resolution of 1280 pixels x 853 pixels. While a 400 x 300 image might look okay on your phone, it looks like trash on a computer monitor. I prefer images that are at least 1000 pixels at their largest point, but don’t ban smaller pictures at this point.

What format should my submission be?

.JPG but .PNG also works.

If I write a description of my image will you include that in your post?

No. Photography is art that should stand on its own. Only exception is the SLICE OF LIFE theme.

When will you start accepting suggestions for next year’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE themes?

I will accept those the last Monday of October and the first Monday of November. I only accept suggestions in the “Comments” section of the journal entries on those days. Don’t text me or email me them or call me or Snapchat me. Put them in the Comments section of the journal entries on those days. I have my reasons.

Was CIRCLE a popular shape or a popular theme. It has a lot of work to do to be as loved as WEEKENDS. Keep scrolling to find out.

It was a great week for participation. 28 participants!

I’m not 100% sure where all the pictures came from, but I’ll guess Texas, California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and Iowa. My picture was taken in Ames, Iowa.

Mary had the big accomplishment of the week. She joined the double digit club for streaks! WooHoo!

But it wasn’t all good news. Tim and Jen couldn’t extend last week’s participation to 2 weeks.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 364 - COLORFUL
COLORFUL

COLORFUL! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a COLORFUL image? If we break down the word COLORFUL it simply means something that is full of color. So any subject or scene where there is a lot of color is COLORFUL. Almost too easy! Many of the pictures taken for CIRCLE would also qualify for COLORFUL.

Of course, there is more than one definition of the term COLORFUL.

While considering possible subjects for your COLORFUL image, meditate on the following quote:

If everyone would look for that uniqueness then we would have a very colorful world.
-Michael Schenker

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of COLORFUL in this place that is is my coat of many colors next Monday.

WPC – WEEK 362 – WEEKENDS

To clarify some information about Sunday’s post. The part about the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. Even though the book does say two people got all 4 of their entries in, in fact NOBODY got all 4 submissions accepted for display. That is the first time I can ever remember that happening. They had some tough judges.

The time I spent yesterday at the Photography Salon was pretty joyful.

I think that WEEKENDS is going to end up being a more popular theme than FAMILY. Seems people like their WEEKENDS more than they like their FAMILY. Very strange. But you’ll have to keep scrolling to find out if the data matches the theory.

As of 12:01 PM on Monday, August 15, this was the current list of ACTIVE streaks (ignore the numbers in parentheses):

28 participants! That is a great week! I guess people really do like their weekends more than they like their families!

On the list of new participants was first time ever participant Tim! I’m hoping this is just the start of big things for Tim.

Angie joined the double digit streak club. Congrats Angie!

This is just a guess, but I believe the submissions spanned from Pennsylvania to Indiana to Illinois to Nebraska to Texas to California and I assume many of these pictures were taken in Iowa. My picture was taken in Illinois.

However, it wasn’t all fun and games and travel. Brooklyn Erb could not extender her streak to 2 weeks. I blame Andy.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 363 - CIRCLE
CIRCLE

CIRCLE! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE.

But what is a CIRCLE image? It is simply a picture where a major compositional element of the picture is a CIRCLE. 360 degrees of fury! There are CIRCLE(s) literally everywhere! Once you starting looking for them, it is hard to not see them everywhere.

While thinking about possible subjects for your CIRCLE image, meditate on the following quote for inspiration:

The nature of God is a circle of which the center is everywhere and the circumference is nowhere.
-Empedocles

I look forward to seeing your interpretation!

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

24 participants! That is a pretty good week, but definitely the least popular theme for a bit.

There were 4 streaks that bit the dust. Jesse, Sara, and Willy couldn’t make it a second week. Suzie’s 5 week streak is history as well.

I can’t be certain, but I think the empire extended from Pennsylvania to Texas to Kansas to Nebraska and Iowa this week.

WEEKENDS

WEEKENDS! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE.

But what is a WEEKENDS photo? It is simply a picture taken of something you do on WEEKENDS. Or it could simply be of something you do this coming WEEKEND(S). So taking your picture this WEEKEND(S) is probably your best bet.

While thinking on possible subjects for your WEEKENDS picture, mediate on the following quote for inspiration:

cozy+smell of pancakes-alarm clock=weekend
-Amy Krouse Rosenthal

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

PEOPLE was probably a popular theme. I even found some PEOPLE I like to photograph. Well one PEOPLE, but if the rest of the PEOPLE are good with Fran, they are probably okay PEOPLE. But to find out, you’ll have to keep scrolling. But I bet there were a ton of pictures taken at Pufferbilly Days submitted.

Only 3 streaks were broken this week. Jen and Vest couldn’t build there streak up to 2. Brandon’s 2 week streak is also history.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 361 - FAMILY
FAMILY

FAMILY! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what exactly is a FAMILY photo? It is simply a picture of a FAMILY or something that comes from a FAMILY. An example might be a keepsake from a relative that has passed on. But don’t be hampered by the strict DNA definition of FAMILY. In the theme reveal image, none of the 3 people share any DNA. They were the judges for the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest. They are a photography FAMILY. They are in the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest FAMILY. The people that come here and submit pictures are a FAMILY of sorts as well. Even though I am the only one that has met every single one of you.

I should note that I am on vacation next Monday. I don’t necessarily have plans for that day yet, but it is quite possible that there will be no reminders going out that day. Also possible the submission post might be later in the day than usual.

When thinking of possible subjects for FAMILY, meditate on the following quote:

The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect in each other’s life.
– Richard Bach

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of FAMILY in this place that is made is definitely a branch of my FAMILY next Monday.

26 participants! That is a pretty good week! We had submissions from Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas, California, Kansas, Colorado, Michigan and even Iowa this week!

There were 4 weeks that sadly were snapped though. Sarah Karber’s couldn’t extend her streak this week. Willy’s streak snapped at 2. Looks like that guy just can’t keep streaks going… Sara Lockner’s streak was snapped at 4 weeks. Just not a good week for Saras. Sarah Toot kept the pride in the name going though.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 360 - PEOPLE
PEOPLE

PEOPLE! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a PEOPLE picture? Well, it is simply a picture that has a PEOPLE or multiple PEOPLE in it. (Somewhere an English teacher is hanging their head so low right now.) I know. PEOPLE are vile and disgusting subjects. They are a failed species that are responsible for 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the evil on this planet. Completely susceptible to propaganda. Responsible for the complete and utter raping of our planet. Avarice. Greed. War. Genocide. Racism. Homophobia. Transphobia. Misogyny. All unique products of PEOPLE. What I’m trying to say is that in the coming war between monkeys and humans, I am hard core #TeamMonkey*. I’d like to say we’ve had a good run, but all the evidence is to the contrary.

But as bad as PEOPLE are, even they aren’t on the list of things I hate most in this world. Well they aren’t the only thing on that list. That Top 5 list goes like this:

#1. People who say “hate” is a strong word. Yeah, I know, that is why I used it.
#2. Powerlines in front of pretty churches or murals. I mean it is 2022? Why aren’t all powerlines buried?
#3. People who park in front of murals. I know there are parking spots there, doesn’t mean you have to use them.
#4. People who are living their own life and getting in my shots, like their world doesn’t revolve around me.
#5. The open faced sandwich. Makes no sense. Shouldn’t exist.

But even I have PEOPLE I like. If you are reading this, you are one of my PEOPLE. Or dare I say, one of my peeps? I will put in a good word for you with our soon to be monkey overlords.

While considering possible subjects for your PEOPLE image meditate on the following quote:

I love mankind… it’s people I can’t stand!!!
-Charles M. Schulz

I look forward to the interpretations.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of PEOPLE in this place that is made for humans by humans next Monday.

* The war has already started. Look into the Japanese monkeys that are already out there stealing babies.

WEEK 358 - WILD
WILD

WILD! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a WILD image? A WILD image is simply a picture of something that isn’t domesticated. Something that is out in nature. A WILDflower. A WILD animal. Such as (in this neck of the woods) a squirrel or a bunny or a bird or a deer or (if you are super lucky) a snake. Any trip into the WILDerness should provide you ample WILD photo opportunities. Lichens and fungus and just all sorts of things that exist, without the aid of man.

Remember, there is also more than one definition of the word WILD!

While thinking on possible subjects for your WILD picture, meditate on the following quote:

It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or the backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B.

It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.
-Cheryl Strayed

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.
