06-11-08

The pictures from the folder 06-11-08 are from a road trip I took with Willy and Jay to Dyersville. The point of the road trip was to see The Field of Dreams. Jay actually suggested this road trip, even though he doesn’t like baseball. I agreed to go, even though I don’t like the movie FIELD OF DREAMS.

Also on the trip, we stopped at the Basilica of Dyersville. I’m not 100% sure of what Basilica is, but I believe it is a really fancy Catholic church where the Pope can hang out if he ever get kicked out of Rome.

Here are some pictures from the road trip:

At this point on our stroll down memory lane, rather than go through full folders, I’m taking a a bit out of a folder at a time, because some of these folders have hundreds and hundreds of images.

These images are from a “tubing” trip down the Des Moines River and pictures I took for Shannon for an article on her for The Des Moines Register.

A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 47

I currently enter 3 photo “contests” a year. The Boone County Fair, The Iowa State Fair, and Pufferbilly Days. After the contests are over, a bag up the photos I entered and put them in a trunk.

While I was putting the Iowa State Fair entries in the trunk I decided it would be a good time to take Page 47 for THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT.

This is the only setup I shot for this page, therefore there aren’t any alternates for this page.

Next time we check in with THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT, we will probably visit Page 40.

This is your reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is WILD ANIMAL:

WEEK 164 - WILD ANIMAL
WILD ANIMAL

A WILD ANIMAL picture is a picture of an animal that isn’t a pet, or isn’t a farm animal. I would add that isn’t in the zoo either.

REMINDER: I won’t be publishing the submission for WILD ANIMAL until Tuesday.

Happy photo harvesting!

07-20-08

There are so many images in the folder called 07-20-08 that I’m going to split the next 2 folders into 3 posts, most likely.

The images in this post are from Ames on the Half Shell with Kountertop, the Iowa Games, some softball, and the Boone County Fair.

Kountertop was one of my favorite bands that played Ames on the Half Shell. To be honest, Ames on the Half Shell was a collection of nondescript classic rock cover bands. 1 band was just about indistinguishable from the next. Which worked for the target audience of Ames on the Half Shell. They just want to get a good buzz and listen to music that doesn’t challenge them.

There were a few exceptions, but they were pretty rare.

Kountertop did fit into the mold of classic rock cover band, but they at least had some style. Plus, they were skilled musicians.

The softball pictures are from a game between Boone and Madrid. It was a battle of some Bennett family friends. The Howards from Boone and the Madduxes from Madrid.

The Boone County Fair pictures were taken with Becky and some of her family. You should be warned that there are some bunny pictures in there. If you don’t like bunny pictures, turn back now!

The Howards: 2016 – Chapter 1

By the time this gets published, I’ll probably be making the trudge up Expo Hill towards the Cultural Building to pick up my photos from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon.

If you didn’t get a chance to duck into the Cultural Building to check out my photos, that is fine. That is dandy. Here are the 4 pictures I entered. 2 were accepted for display. 2 were not.

2 pictures for display was a solid showing. You never know what the judges will like. I was surprised that Willy’s eye was selected for display. I thought of the 4, it had the worst chance to make it. I guess you never know.

A few statistics from the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon:

1018 Photographers Entered
3201 Photographs Entered
Photographers from 20 other states entered
863 Adults Entered
466 of adults who entered have at least one photograph on display
27% of the photos entered were exhibited

I should start planning for next year, but that hasn’t really been my style, yet.

It is once again time for me (and by me, I mean you guys) to pick out my photos to enter in the Pufferbilly Days Photo Contest. Once again, I am going to leave it up to a popular vote.

This is the final collection of photos from my road trip to Maquoketa Caves State Park with Willy and Jay. All the way back in July of 2017.

It was a great road trip and I want to go on another road trip here in the near future. Just need to find a crew. Hmmmm…

Any ways, here are the balance of caves pictures

Maquoketa Caves State Park: Chapter 1

An announcement!

Today is the beginning of the Boone County Fair. On Saturday, Baby Got Rack will be competing in the Barbecue Competition. You should come out an support us. I think we will be there pretty much all day. I think judging is at 4 PM.

See you there!

You can also check out the photos I entered in the Boone County Fair Photography Contest.

Jay, Willy, and I hopped in the car and went on a road trip to Maquoketa Caves State Park. At this point, I’ve published every ancillary photo from the trip, but not the pictures from the actual Caves State Park.

I begin that process now.

It was a brutally hot and humid day. Spending time in caves was very refreshing. However, the day had the worst photographic conditions you can imagine. The lighting was brutal.

I soldiered on though.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 148 – HUMOR

I knew that HUMOR was going to be a hard theme. As I write this, it would seem that many people struggled to find HUMOR in their everyday lives. I would have some commentary on that, but I’ll spare you at this time.

As I am writing this, I am sitting at home recovering from an epic performance of HAMILTON at the Civic Center and waiting for the cable guy to show up and lower my bill by $30, allegedly.

Therefore, it is possible that I will be without internet while he is upgrading my internet. If more pictures come in after I write this, I will post them at some point. Probably Friday.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk all tommyrot about the cable guy. You came to see the submissions:

WEEK 148 - HUMOR - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 149 - NIGHT
NIGHT

NIGHT! What a great theme! But what is a NIGHT photograph? A night photograph is any photo that is taken at NIGHT. You don’t necessarily need a tripod and long exposure, but that wouldn’t hurt.

As always, I look forward to seeing your interpretations!

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very nightly Monday.

Pretty much all of the images from the folder 06-07-08 are from Ames on the Half Shell’s Family Night.

I believe the name of the band was Murphy’s Law. There are plenty of images of people that weren’t Jaycees in this collection:
