Congratulations Saydie – Delta

Time again to check in with everybody’s favorite 2018 high school graduate, Saydie!

I came across this quote from Alice Walker for graduates:

Be compassionate to everyone. Don’t just search for whatever it is that annoys and frightens you, see beyond those things to the basic human being. Especially see the child in the man or woman. Even if they are destroying you, allow a moment to see how lost in their own delusion and suffering they are.
-Alice Walker

Alice Walker is famous for writing THE COLOR PURPLE. A line from that book is one of the mandates of this website:

I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.

Here is another set of pictures from Saydie’s Senior Pictures photo shoot:

The tall drink of water posing with Saydie in half the pictures is Kyle. He currently attends UNI. Saydie will also be attending UNI, but I’m told, “not because Kyle goes there”.

We’re about to the halfway point on Saydie pictures now. About.

Congratulations Saydie – Gamma

Time to check back in with my favorite 2018 high school graduate Saydie.

Thought I would start with more of my favorite bits of wisdom given at commencement speech:

Success is like a mountain that keeps growing ahead of you as you hike it… Err in the direction of kindness.
-George Saunders

People should always err in the direction of kindness. Wish I saw more of that in my everyday life.

We’re at the point in the Saydie pictures that we are warmed up. Giving the umpire the signal that we are ready to play ball.

Congratulations Saydie – Beta

It is time for lap 2 in the Congratulations Saydie marathon. But before we get into the photo bonanza, I want to take a small quick time to take umbrage with one of the responses I received to the last batch of Saydie images. They pulled out the part of the entry where I referred to Saydie as my niece and held it up to mockery, since we share not a scrap of DNA or would share part of a family tree through marriage.

This person feels that the only nieces and nephews I have are my biological nieces in nephews and the children of Olivia’s brother and sisters.

My reaction to their commentary is just pure sadness. I hope they don’t go through life with this stilted definition of the word “family”.

The New York Times ran an articles and asked high school students to define family. I just want to share two:

Caitlin

I do not think there is such thing as a “normal family” because everyone’s lifestyle is different, and it would be a stereotype to say that all normal families have a Mom, a Dad and kids or a pet. That is not true. Some people choose a different choice. There are kids with two moms, or two dads, and with one mom or one dad. There are also plenty of kids who live with a close relative as well. Family are the people you feel safe and secure with. Everyone’s family is normal to them, because that is how they live their life. So be proud of your family, and don’t classify one family as normal.

AND

Taylor

I define a family as a group of people who share laughter, sadness, tragedy, victory, loss, regret, happiness, and success together. A family is hard to define. Most commonly one thinks a man, a woman, and their children. Time has shown this isn’t an exact answer. Grandparents, adopted parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and even just friends can make up a family. Family is important for individuals to lead happy lifestyles and to become satisfied with their life.

I just hope that the commentator opens their heart some day. Maybe if they owned a dog…

Here are a ton more pictures of my niece Saydie:

Congratulations Saydie – Alpha

I’d just like to wish a full and hearty congratulations to all the Class of 2018 on their recent accomplishment of graduating from high school.

I obviously don’t have any wise words about their future, but I can Google and find somebody that something wise once with the best of them!

“But my dear graduates, let me be frank, the best years are very much ahead of you. And they can be whatever you want them to be… As much as you’ve changed during your time here, more change is coming. You’re going to continue to evolve in unforeseen ways. You are full of complexities and wonders that haven’t even begun to surface. Life’s unpredictability will draw these out and what defines you now will be mere shades and hues of a more vibrant you over the next five, 10, 50 years. Honestly, I can’t think of anything more liberating than that, knowing that life will look differently than you think it will.”
– Octavia Spencer

But if there is one person whose accomplishments I most want to lift up and whose future adventures I’m most interested in now that her high school career as come to an end, it is my niece Saydie.

I celebrate Saydie’s accomlishments and look to her future by sharing some (a ton) of pictures from her Senior Picture Photo Shoot from last summer:

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

TOY

TOY! What a great theme! But what is a TOY photo? A TOY photo can be any picture that features a TOY. Of course, what a person considers a TOY can wildly vary. Another example of a TOY photo would be a picture taken with a TOY camera or possibly on the TOY setting on a camera.

I look forward to seeing your interpretations!

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge due date. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nobody showed class, taste, and sophistication this week by signing up for a Photography 139 email subscription. I’ll try and do better next week.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 WEBMASTER

2 out of the last 3 days and 3 times in the last 30, the publishing of the blog has caused the website to crash. I’m currently working on the matter. Hopefully this post didn’t crash the website. This will possibly lead to a new page being added to the website. We will see.

**************************************

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very toying Monday!

Tomorrow Belongs to the People Who Prepare for it Today

Every day is a good day to start a post with a quote from Malcolm X.

Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.

I start with this quote because yesterday, Logan graduated from the finest university in all the lands. On flat earth and on globe earth. Iowa State University. To celebrate Logan I’m releasing some photos from a head shot photo session that has been in the back log for almost a year.

This is probably exhibit 45 as to why I’ll never get heavily into the portrait business. I like to take 5 times more pictures than necessary. Half of them strange. Then half of the other half I like to edit in what I’ll call a non-standard style.

Now that Logan has a degree from the finest university, he will be looking for a job in his field. He has also started his own photography business called Third Generation Thumbnail. He is currently specializing in real estate photography and videography. Although, we are shooting a wedding together at some point in the near future.

These photos were taken for his professional pursuits.

If you have any real estate photography needs, I can hook you and him up!

Unfortunately, the weather was terrible that day, so we were trapped inside. Hopefully, next time we do a family portrait, the weather will be more cooperative.

A Minor Announcement

Just wanted to let everybody know, as we are now less than one month from my birthday, that I will not be having the birthday party this year. Time just escaped from me and I don’t have the time to plan such a shindig. Better luck next year.

Amber’s Family

Every once in a while, a photographer gets to take important pictures. It is rare, but it does happen. I was given such an honor recently when Amber contacted me to take family pictures of her family before Christmas because her Grandpa was being put in hospice care.
