The Proverbial Swan Song

While I was preparing to write this entry I went down a rabbit hole on the origins of the term “swan song”.

I have heard the term many times, but never really understood what it meant. Apparently there is a belief dating back to ancient Greece that swans stay mostly mute for their life and then right before they die, they sing a beautiful song.

There is still a fair amount of debate on whether or not swans do in fact sing a beautiful song before they die. I would like to think it is true since swans are among the most beautiful of birds. They certainly are the most beautiful bird that you can see in Iowa, in the wild.

The term isn’t always morbid. Is has come to be synonymous with doing something great right before you retire.

I don’t know if this post 100% qualifies, but it is about a form of retirement for me.

For the last couple of years I have done some pro bono photography (although I once was paid in homemade treats for Naima) for the Boone Area Humane Society. The last time I did photography for them was when I covered their annual Pet Memorial Day Celebration.

Due to the shifting sands of the power structure of the Boone Area Humane Society, I have a feeling that I won’t be asked to do any photography for them in the coming years. But that is a story for a different time.

Here are some pictures from that event:

Kio ran the event. Pastor Doug gave a speech and lead us in prayer. It was a cool event. I hope it continues to happen in the future, but the way things stand currently, I have my doubts.

Another loss that people in one of my communities are experiencing is that we learned that we will be losing Pastor Doug and his amazing wife Jodie near the end of June. It is a good deal for Doug because he is getting a big fatty promotion. He will be the District Superintendent of the Southeast District. He will be posting up in Mount Pleasant.

For our church, it kinda sucks. Doug is a great Pastor and Jodie is possibly an even better Pastor’s wife. Losing both of them will leave a hole in our church that the next person or persons will have quite a time filling.

The new Pastor will also be like the 80th Pastor we have had in the last 5 years. Now that is probably hyperbole, but search your feelings, you know it to be true.

There is a common misconception that somewhere in The Bible it says “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” It is a common phrase that is trotted out as a reassurance when people are going through difficult times or grief.

The truth is that this isn’t in The Bible. Sorry, but sometimes that light at the end of the tunnel is a train.

That being said, I would like to give the common response to the phrase, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.”

I wish God didn’t know we were so strong*.

The good news is that while God doesn’t say anything about giving us more than we can handle, God does say that we won’t be tempted beyond our limits:

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Therefore, I hope my church will not be tempted to feel sorry for itself. I hope my church won’t feel tempted to cling to the past. I hope my church won’t be tempted to resist the future.

A new Pastor is coming. While they will be the 80th Pastor in the last 5 years, I have faith that we will get a good one. We are in a good position and while we aren’t exactly a “destination” denomination, we are in a relatively good place and we have some powerful people looking out for our interests.

Playing the numbers game, we’ve really only had one bad Pastor in the last 15 years. While they were a really, really, really, really, really bad Pastor (I mean the guy sermonized at least once a month about past congregants he had smited and that is just the tip of the iceberg), we aren’t due for another like him for at least 30 years. Those are my calculations at least.

While I’m sad to be losing such great people, I am optimistic about the future and what a new Pastor will bring to our church and what our church will bring to a new Pastor!

There is light at the end of the tunnel and at this time, I don’t hear a train.

*On a personal note, this phrase has always bothered me.

There are two types of pictures in the folder called 10-01-08. The first types are pictures taken during the restoration process of the Ames Party Bus. The second type is everybody’s favorite: flowers!

The images in the folder 09-23-08 are a little bit all over the place. There are pictures from a Little White Lye Soap sales event. Pictures from Alexis reveling in athletic glory. Plus a sticker given to me by Janice. Finally a strange sculpture that I think is uniquely Midwestern.

All of Alexis’ medals came from a gymnastics meet. A sport she would have no doubt dominated, but fortunately she had the good sense to leave it behind in her youth.

I believe I placed that sticker on the side of my work computer. That was 3 work computers ago, so who knows where that sticker resides now.

At this point on our stroll down memory lane, rather than go through full folders, I’m taking a a bit out of a folder at a time, because some of these folders have hundreds and hundreds of images.

These images are from a “tubing” trip down the Des Moines River and pictures I took for Shannon for an article on her for The Des Moines Register.

This is the final collection of 2016 images to publish. I mean I could publish the images I took for the Computer Mine Holiday Card, but nobody wants to see that.

We’re almost to the end of Sunday blogs. Once I get through all of the 2017 images, I will go back to taking Sundays off.

Announcement.

Union Theater Movie Night for October will be Sunday, October 28. The theme for October is horror.

The B Film wilm will be INCUBUS.

A little about INCUBUS:

Incubus (Esperanto: Inkubo) is a 1966 black-and-white American horror film filmed entirely in the constructed language Esperanto. It was directed by Leslie Stevens, creator of The Outer Limits, and stars William Shatner, shortly before he would begin his work on Star Trek. The film’s cinematography was by Conrad Hall, who went on to win three Academy Awards for his work on the films Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, American Beauty and Road to Perdition.

The use of Esperanto was intended to create an eerie, other-worldly feeling,[2] and Stevens prohibited dubbing the film into other languages; however, on the Special Features section of the DVD the makers claim that Esperanto was used because of perceived greater international sales.

Incubus was the second feature film primarily using Esperanto. (The first, Angoroj (“Agonies”), appeared in 1964.)

Esperanto speakers are generally disappointed by the pronunciation of the language by the cast of Incubus.[2]

The film was considered to be lost for many years, until a copy was found in Paris in 1996.

The feature film will be the recent Criterion release of SISTERS.

A little about SISTERS:

Sisters (released as Blood Sisters in the United Kingdom) is a 1973 American psychological horror-slasher film[4] directed by Brian De Palma and starring Margot Kidder, Jennifer Salt, and Charles Durning. The plot focuses on a French Canadian model whose separated conjoined twin is suspected of a brutal murder witnessed by a newspaper reporter in Staten Island.

Co-written by De Palma and Louisa Rose, the screenplay for the film was inspired by the Soviet Siamese twins Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova and features narrative and visual references to several films by Alfred Hitchcock.[5] Filmed on location in Staten Island, New York City, the film prominently features split-screen compositions (also present in subsequent De Palma films such as Carrie), and was scored by frequent Hitchcock collaborator Bernard Herrmann.

Released in the spring of 1973, Sisters received praise from critics who noted its adept performances and prominent use of homage. It marked the first thriller for De Palma, who followed it with other shocking, graphic thrillers, and went on to become a cult film in the years after its release.

Jesse is said to be bringing chili.

All are invited!

The projector rolls at 6.

This month’s Union Street Theater Club’s Movie Night will be next Sunday.

The B Movie is THE WRAITH.
The feature presentation is THE HITCHER.

Since the theme of the night is southwestern, the snack will be chili.

The projector rolls at 6 PM.

October’s double feature has yet to be determined, but it will be horror themed. The feature will most likely be the Brian De Palma classic SISTERS. The B movie has yet to be determined. The date has yet to be determined as well.

November’s double feature will be a tribute to the great Burt Reynolds. The B movie will be WHITE LIGHTNING. The feature will be SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT.

What Do You Call a Wasp?

I was going to go through quite a bit of older photos before I published photos of Shannon extracting honey from a few weeks back.

Then, Satruday’s episode of SVENGOOLIE featured the bee movie TERROR OUT OF THE SKY, the sequel to the bee movie THE SAVAGE BEES. I was inspired by this terrible movie to edit and publish the honey extraction pictures as soon as possible.

Shannon was extracting honey for her husband’s business Foley’s Russian Bees. Honey isn’t really even the main part of his business. His main business is raising and selling queens, however with so many bees, honey is produced.

Honey has become a very sweet side business.

If you are interested in buying some honey here are the prices:

12 oz for $6
24 oz for $10

I don’t believe you can buy the honey from their online store, however, if you let me know, I can pass an order on to Shannon.
