Boone FUMC Church Directory: Chapter 1

One of the photo projects I worked on in early 2018 was grabbing miscellaneous pictures for the Boone First United Methodist Church Directory.

The person in charge of putting the directory together wanted some pictures of the Bell Choir and some pictures of Doug sermonizing. That is why these pictures below exist:

After church I went to the Sharp farm. I believe to take a picture of an unpictured outhouse.

A PHOTO JOURNAL – HENRY CARROLL – PAGE 40

Back at the end of August I had a free Saturday afternoon, so I decided to head out to Big Creek and tackle Page 40 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Create a playlist. Now listen to it while out taking pictures.

It was hard for me to determine the exact appropriate length for a playlist, so I sorta cheated on that aspect. I decided to just use the soundtrack from BABY DRIVER. It is, perhaps, the best soundtrack in movie history. Especially with the way it is intertwined into the movie.

If you don’t know the soundtrack, here is a listing:

Disc one

No. Title Artist(s) Length
1. “Bellbottoms” Jon Spencer Blues Explosion 5:17
2. “Harlem Shuffle” Bob & Earl 2:52
3. “Egyptian Reggae” Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers 2:37
4. “Smokey Joe’s La La” Googie Rene 3:02
5. “Let’s Go Away for Awhile” The Beach Boys 2:21
6. “B-A-B-Y” Carla Thomas 2:57
7. “Kashmere” Kashmere Stage Band 4:57
8. “Unsquare Dance” Dave Brubeck 2:00
9. “Neat Neat Neat” The Damned 2:42
10. “Easy” (single version) The Commodores 4:16
11. “Debora” T. Rex 3:19
12. “Debra” Beck 5:43
13. “Bongolia” Incredible Bongo Band 2:15
14. “Baby Let Me Take You (In My Arms)” The Detroit Emeralds 3:53
15. “Early in the Morning” Alexis Korner 3:01

Disc two

No. Title Artist(s) Length
16. “The Edge” David McCallum 2:54
17. “Nowhere to Run” Martha and the Vandellas 3:02
18. “Tequila” The Button Down Brass 3:32

20. “Every Little Bit Hurts” Brenda Holloway 2:57
21. “Intermission” Blur 2:27
22. “Hocus Pocus” (original single version) Focus 3:18
23. “Radar Love” (1973 single edit) Golden Earring 3:44
24. “Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up” Barry White 4:51
25. “Know How” Young MC 4:02
26. “Brighton Rock” Queen 5:10
27. “Easy” Sky Ferreira 4:28
28. “Baby Driver” Simon & Garfunkel 3:16
29. “Was He Slow?” (credit roll version) Kid Koala featuring Kevin Spacey and Jon Bernthal 1:47
30. “Chase Me” Danger Mouse featuring Run the Jewels and Big Boi 3:27

Only one picture can be physically adhered into the physical A PHOTO JOURNAL, but obviously I took many more when I was out and about tooling around Big Creek. Here are some of the others:

This is your reminder that this week’s WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is LANDSCAPE:

WEEK 165 - LANDSCAPE
LANDSCAPE

A LANDSCAPE photo is a photo of a landscape. It could be a cityscape. It could be a waterscape. But the main subject of the photo is land or water or a city.

Happy photo harvesting.

Iowa State 26 Akron 13

Yesterday, Iowa State had an emotional football game.

Before the game, there was a moment of silence for Celia Barquin Arozamena. They placed her picture in the endzone where she would have stood to be honored as the Female Athlete of the Year. Both the Iowa State and Akron football teams wore CBA decals on their helmets. They played a video tribute to her on the video board. The team came out with a Spanish flag. At least 70% of the fans wore yellow/gold to honor her memory. The Iowa State University Cyclone Varsity Marching Band spelled out her initials on the field.

The game was almost an afterthought and it played kind of like one. Iowa Sate beat Akron 26-13 in a somewhat lackluster game.

Here are some pictures from the day.

07-20-08

There are so many images in the folder called 07-20-08 that I’m going to split the next 2 folders into 3 posts, most likely.

The images in this post are from Ames on the Half Shell with Kountertop, the Iowa Games, some softball, and the Boone County Fair.

Kountertop was one of my favorite bands that played Ames on the Half Shell. To be honest, Ames on the Half Shell was a collection of nondescript classic rock cover bands. 1 band was just about indistinguishable from the next. Which worked for the target audience of Ames on the Half Shell. They just want to get a good buzz and listen to music that doesn’t challenge them.

There were a few exceptions, but they were pretty rare.

Kountertop did fit into the mold of classic rock cover band, but they at least had some style. Plus, they were skilled musicians.

The softball pictures are from a game between Boone and Madrid. It was a battle of some Bennett family friends. The Howards from Boone and the Madduxes from Madrid.

The Boone County Fair pictures were taken with Becky and some of her family. You should be warned that there are some bunny pictures in there. If you don’t like bunny pictures, turn back now!

IMAGES FROM A SATURDAY

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will involve even more softball, pictures from my first mission trip, and possibly a trip to the Miller farm.

I Want My Mummies

Seemed like a good time to share some of my pictures from the Iowa State Fair this year.

I made two trips to the Fair. 1 with Baby Got Rack. The other on the last day of the Fair with Jesse and Nader to pick up my 2 photos that were displayed at the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon. Russell even met up with us briefly.

Fortune smiled upon me with the scheduling of events at the Iowa State Fair. One of my favorite bands was playing on one of the free stages and the date happily coincided with the last day of the Fair, so I didn’t have to make a special trip to see Here Come the Mummies.

If you haven’t heard of Here Come the Mummies they are a funk group where everybody in the band dresses like a mummy. You can see how they appeal to my particular set of tastes.

Legend has it that the Nashville based band is filled with Grammy award winning artists that dress like mummies to conceal their identity; for fear of the band members violating their current record contracts.

I don’t know if this is true, but their high level of musicianship would make a pretty strong case for it being true. I don’t know too many other rock/funk concerts where you would see a badass flute duel and it would make 100% total sense.

Before I go on first dates, I like to send my date a copy of PANTS to listen to. It is the easiest way to insure that there is no second date. Also why my Tinder profile is so unpopular.*

Here are some pictures from an awesome (but one of the wettest I’ve ever experienced from the standpoint of water) rainy night with Here Come the Mummies:

We didn’t stick around for the concert as long as I had hoped. Hopefully Here Come the Mummies comes back to Iowa in 2019 so I can have the full experience.

*This is all a lie. I don’t go on dates. My Tinder profile is very popular.

Iowa State vs. Oklahoma

Yesterday, Iowa State returned to Jack Trice Stadium and played much, much, much better than they did against Iowa.

They played #5 Oklahoma, a legitimate national title contender and kept the game within striking distance until the final 2 minutes of the game.

I took plenty of pictures of the game day, but I didn’t take any 2nd half pictures. I’m not superstitious, but I’m a littlesticious. The less I touched the camera, the better Iowa State did. So I didn’t touch the camera at all in the 2nd half.

Here are some pictures from the day:

Hopefully the Cyclones can get into the win column next Saturday against Akron, but that same Akron team just went on the road and beat Northwestern. Iowa State never catches a break.

It is true that Northwestern is a part of the complete trash Big Ten West (Iowa and Minnesota are the only schools in that division that won yesterday and Iowa was playing a bad FCS team and Minnesota was playing Miami and not the one in Florida). Nebraska lost to Troy. One guy. Beat the vaunted Corned Huskers.

While Iowa State should certainly still win, the game suddenly looks much harder than it did 2 weeks ago

I took many more pictures from the game. You can peruse them by looking at the link below:

IOWA STATE VS. OKLAHOMA

For those that have been asking. We are hoping to have Taco Tailgate this year on either October 13 for the West Virginia game or October 27 for the Texas Tech game. I just found out that I am going to a Foo Fighters concert on October 12, so October 27 is the most likely scenario.

I am also still looking at arranging a road trip to the November 3 game against Kansas. Contact me if you are interested.

07-07-08 & 07-12-08

Going to put two folders of images out there on this post. The folders 07-07-08 and 07-12-08 contain pictures of light painting of flowers and from Saucy Jack’s night at Ames on the Half Shell.

I haven’t really done much light painting lately. It is something I need to try my hand at again.

I remember Saucy Jack being the worst band to play Ames on the Half Shell the times I attended Ames on the Half Shell. They were booked every year because they had a connection with somebody who maybe was once a Jacyees. They were kind of a poor man’s Hairball, only without the limited musicianship. Also, without the theatrics.

The images in the folder call 07-05-08 involved a long day of Jaycee activities I engaged in on July 4, 2008.

I began the day helping out at a special Ames on the Half Shell event involving the Burnin’ Sensations and The Nadas. Then I went and helped setup and set off fireworks.

It was a pretty full and tiring day.

There are pictures from Ames on the Half Shell. The Box Brothers are the band.

There are pictures of the WHO Tractor Ride.

There are pictures of the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

And finally, there is a picture of the most accurate nickname I was ever given.

Next week’s walk down memory lane will involve a wedding where I was a 2nd shooter. I don’t know or even remember the name of the people that got married. However, if the other weddings I’ve done photography on is any indication, they are probably divorced now. That might have taken a dark turn, but #facts.
