United Way Wall

A few weeks back I posted about a collection of photos of mine that grace the wall of the United Way of Story County’s lobby wall. I finally got a chance to get down there to see the wall in its glory on Saturday before Shannon and I went to see Rent.

I promised a picture of the wall. Here is that picture:

If you wish to see the wall and all of its glory in person, this map will help:

Instagram!

In one of my few blogs of the last few months I wrote about a camera phone app called Lightbox. I wrote how I was tired of waiting for Instagram to come to Droid, so I was trying out an alternative.

In the last week or so, Instagram finally came to Droid! I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it as much as the hype, but I truly do. I publish pretty much every every Instagram photo on Twitter (of course) and on Facebook (biting my tongue and trying to forget how much I hate Facebook), so many of you have already seen these images.

For the rest of you, here is a collection of my first Instagram images:

If you have an iPhone or a Droid I highly recommend downloading and playing with Instagram. Of course, I recommend you following me on Instagram as well.

My only note of concern is that Facebook recently bought Instagram (for 1 billion dollars), so I do worry that they will destroy it like most other things they touch, but I will hold out hope.

Welcome to Melbourne, Iowa

On my way between State Center and Methodist I was told to meander. So I meandered to Melbourne, Iowa. It is mostly a nondescript town with the exception of an old school that is being torn down and this fascinating viaduct under the old right of way of a long abandoned railroad.

You may not know that one of the first things that attracted me to photography was old photographs of trains. That is probably the Boone in me. So I enjoy finding relics (nearly abandoned) of a time when the steel horse dominated commerce.

So I pulled over the car and took a few pictures.

As I think about it, it might have been best to photograph this viaduct at night or in the company of another person to act as a model. Perhaps if I am ever in Melbourne’s neck of the woods again this viaduct and I will dance again.

Sorrow and Gladness - 2012
Sorrow and Gladness – 2012

My annual trip to the State Center Rose Garden was kind of bittersweet. I went earlier than normal because of how early flowers have been blooming this year. As it turns out, I probably went too early and it was definitely too windy to get as many great pictures as last year.

Another bittersweet aspect of this trip is that I normally make this trip with my Mom. However, this year I made this trip on the way to bring her home from the hospital. We’ll make this trip again together next year.

I was a little disappointed to find out the the State Center Rose Garden wasn’t on Foursquare, but I have since remedied that situation. You’re welcome America!
