Selfie Project – October

You can tell the year is starting to wind down. I don’t feel I did the best work on THE SELFIE PROJECT in October. It admittedly wasn’t the busiest month of the year for me, but I still had plenty of things go down. I’ll have to try to do better in November. Finish off THE SELFIE PROJECT strong!!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 111 – LANDSCAPE

Usually when I start this weekly post with something about participation rates being kind of lax this week my email inbox suddenly gets several submissions. Not this week. LANDSCAPE didn’t ring the bell for many people. Maybe it was the cold weather this week. Maybe it was the excitement of Manafort Day! I don’t know, but there weren’t many LANDSCAPE submissions.

But you didn’t come here to listen to me talk tommyrot about submission rates. You came to see the submissions!

A solid week of submissions! Though they be small, they be mighty!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 112 - FRAMED
FRAMED!

FRAMED! What a great theme! But what does it mean? A FRAMED photo should have its main subject matter boxed in by what we’ll call negative space. What is around the subject should make a frame for the subject. For example, a frame makes a great frame. A window makes a great frame.

Of course, that isn’t the only definition of FRAMED.

However, use your imagination and define the theme anyway you see fit.

As always, I look forward to your interpretations.

HOUSEKEEPING

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.

Want your own Photography 139 email subscription? Call, email, or text me and I’ll get you the hook up.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very framed Monday!

Iowa State Cyclones 14 Texas Christian Horny Toads 7

Saturday was a magical day at Jack Trice Stadium. Not only were the tacos at Taco Tailgate great as always. The #25 Iowa State Cyclones defense manhandled #4 TCU.

Since the weather was supposed to be extremely cold and there was a chance of precipitation, I once again brought the Canon point and shoot. Here are a few pictures from the day:

There is a Swift Stop gas station in the bottom 2 pictures. In another life when I ran the campus outpost of the Evil Clown Empire there was a guy that worked for me that was the most America hating American I ever met. When he wasn’t talking about his Dungeons & Dragons empire, he was talking about how he wanted to move to Australia because he hated this country so much.

He was scheduled to work the lunch shift on September 11, 2001. After the airplanes struck the towers he called in to see if we were closing for the day. The answer was “no”. We were staying open. I don’t know if it was the right decision to stay open, but I don’t have to grapple with that in my sleep. I didn’t make that decision.

Then he called back every hour hoping that the answer was something different. The answer was never anything different.

Finally at the appointed hour he waddled into the store and proceeded to fill the store with his pissing and moaning. He was the kind of guy that pissed and moaned all the time, but he was particularly on fire this morning.

It seemed to me that he felt that he was the only one experiencing the events of the day. He was the only one that wanted to be somewhere else.

Finally, after 30 minutes of his grousing, I got sick of him and snapped at him and sent him home.

I can’t remember if he quit or was fired from the Evil Clown Empire any longer. A few years later I heard that he had died. He was working at that Swift Stop gas station. He had a heart attack while he was working alone. There was nobody in the store. He died on the floor of that convenience store and laid there until the next customer came in and discovered him.

He never moved to Australia.

I think about him on 9/11. I think about him when I drive by that building. It isn’t a gas station any longer. I believe it is a restaurant now. I remember, if your dream is to move to Australia, do it. Sooner rather than later. Tomorrow you could end up dead on the floor of a convenience store.

And on that note, I was able to restore the following blog by uploading these pictures to the SmugMug Gallery:

Next Saturday’s walk down memory lane will involve Nader.

A few weeks back I decided to tackle Page 93 for THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Photo Journal - Page 93
Page 93 – How close can you get to someone without your presence being felt?

Because of my ninja like stealth, I decided that a fly would be the best thing to sneak up on. If I had chose a human, eventually the lens would just slam against their head. Then they would be annoyed.

Here are a few other photos from this project:
