This is the your reminder that this week’s theme for the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE is PORTRAIT:
Happy photo harvesting!
My new Wednesday Photo Project is to work my way through the book “Use This If You Want to Take Great Photographs. A photo journal” by Henry Carroll. I’m not sure how much I’ll do on each night, but I made my first foray into the book with Shannon’s assistance last Wednesday.
The way the book works is that is mostly a collection of pages to paste pictures into with photo directives like:
Take an ugly picture of something beautiful.
Create drama around the edge of your frame.
Use aperture to capture melancholy.
Make light the subject of your photography.
And so on and so forth.
Here are four images I started with:
Show us that photography is a form of magic.
Photograph your earliest memory.
Throw something at your subject and capture their reaction with a fast shutter speed.
Since I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to attack this project, I might redo a couple of these photos because I think I’m going to add on a rule that nobody can be in more than one picture
I spent most of my Memorial Day enjoying my day off. Watching old war movies and grilling with the family. But the highlight of my day was seeing Nora for the first time in WAY TOO LONG! Which is completely my fault, but an error in my judgment that I will fix in the future. Hopefully on a trip to Manhattan, Kansas in July!
Here are a few pictures from our trip to the Kiddy Corral.
Nora also brought Bethany, Dae Hee, and Jim with her. Very thoughtful of her!
One of the smartest and most talented and most interesting people I know!
For those of you who don’t have the good fortune to know Stephanie, she is in the bunny glasses.
Unrelated, for some reason Michelle from day job made this video. Enjoy:
As always, if you are an email subscriber to this here blog, you will have to go to the website to watch the video. It is 16 seconds long and it is glorious!
Here is a photo I took at my family’s Mother’s Day Barbecue of Logan.
I need to play with some of these old timey filters more often!

Announcing and inviting you to a new Club. The Union Street Theater Movie Club!
What is the Union Street Theater Movie Club?
Great question! Take a look at this picture:
That doesn’t answer the question?
1 Sunday a month a few of us have been gathering in the Union Street Theater (AKA my basement) one Sunday night a month to watch and discuss movies. We have been pairing a B Movie with a classic, great, or historically significant movie.
These are the pairings thus far:
January: BRIDE OF THE GHOULS – FEAR AND DESIRE
February: BEAST OF YUCCA FLATS – FULL METAL JACKET
March: THE WILD WORLD OF BATWOMAN – ALIEN
APRIL: THE ROOM – DR. STRANGELOVE
I know that it has been heavy on Kubrick, but if you are raising that question, you don’t really know me, do you?
Here is what happens at Union Street Theater Movie Club.
6 PM – B movie starts
Following movie, we make popcorn. I will stock and share Pepsi. All other beverages are on you to bring. The theater doesn’t have a fancy popcorn maker yet, but maybe someday we will. No thanks to Dae Hee. I don’t know. Maybe we’ll hold a fundraiser.
After popcorn has been made – Feature Presentation
Stimulating conversation follows the Feature Presentation
I know what you are think, “I’m sold! When is the next Union Street Theater Movie Club? I don’t even care what the movies are!”
Details of the next Union Street Theater Movie Club
DATE: Sunday, May 28, 2017
TIME: 6 PM
PLACE: Union Street Theater AKA my basement right next to the Photography 139 Basement Studio
B MOVIE: SHACK OUT ON 101 (1955)
FEATURE PRESENTATION: ALIENS (1986)
I couldn’t find a trailer for SHACK OUT ON 101, but check out this sweet poster!
Here is the trailer for ALIENS:
“This time it’s war.”
Of course, if you are an email subscriber, you will have to go to the website to see the video.
Let me know if you’re going to show up. Or don’t. I’ll have enough ice cold Pepsi either way.
A couple of Sundays ago was Confirmation Sunday in my church. It was a big day for the Youth Group as 5 members became full members of the church AND for the Methodist Men as we served a brunch in between services to celebrate their accomplishments.
Here are a few pictures from the day:
All 5 of these kids bring such wonderful, unique, and amazing dimensions to our church. I’m excited to see where their faith journeys take them.
Since a few people have been asking, I am making a formal announcement.
The reasons are multiple and complicated, but it is probably your fault. If you search your heart, you know it to be true.
So there will be NO:
– Baby Got Rack Award Winning Barbecue
– Hardcore Firetub Action
– Bubbles
– Sidewalk Chalk
– Golden Retriever
– Master’s Playlist
– Cornhole
– Tent
– Stimulating Conversation
– Catching up with old friends
– No photos like the ones below
Better luck in 2018. I have the idea for that year’s invite. I just need to find some volunteers and some costumes.
A few weeks back Micky and I hopped in his wife car and traveled to exotic North Ankeny to visit Michelle, Craig, Lily, and the newest addition to their family… Levi.
I didn’t actually getting any pictures of Levi, but here are some pictures of Lily:
I have to give Micky some props. It was amazing how quickly Lily warmed up to him. He is the toddler whisperer. A skill that will no doubt come in handy on our future snake hunting adventures.
