Rodan139: Fire Watchtower

When I went to Allamakee County with Teresa to harvest their town signs, one of my must see stops was the only fire watchtower in Iowa. It is buried in Yellow River State Forest and hasn’t been used for years. I knew it was something I definitely wanted to photograph with Rodan139. And that is exactly what I did.

Yes, one of these pictures is in the 2023 Photography 139 Calendar.

These pictures are making me itch for the open road. I also haven’t taken flight with Rodan139 this year yet. I need to get on that as well.

I have a list of places I want to visit this year. The first one on my list is the kite festival thing in Clear Lake that is coming up in a couple Saturdays. Let me know if you are interested in a short little road trip on a Saturday morning to watch some kites in some cold weather.

28 participants! That is a pretty great week!

This week we had submissions from:

+ Iowa
+ Kansas
+ Missouri
+ Nebraska
+ Pennsylvania
+ Texas

There were no new additions to the map. This year’s list is:

+ Arkansas
+ Florida
+ Georgia
+ Iowa
+ Kansas
+ Nebraska
+ Nevada
+ Missouri
+ Pennsylvania
+ Texas

10 states is still pretty good for this time of year though!

This week I took my picture about 2 miles from my front door. I’m still not helping to grow the map.

There were no major milestones reached this week, BUT there were also no streaks snapped either. So that is good news.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 387 - PLAY
PLAY

PLAY! What a great theme for Year 10 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a PLAY image? It is simply a picture of something that is PLAYed with or somebody at PLAY. There are all sort of different things that can be PLAYed. A sport. A game. A musical instrument. A human being. Or even a PLAY is PLAYed. Remember, what some might consider WORK others consider PLAY.

While considering possible subjects for your PLAY submission, meditate on the following quote and I have no doubt you will come up with a great picture:

It’s the things we play with and the people who help us play that make a great difference in our lives.
-Fred Rogers

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge. There is a limit of 3 submissions per participant. To be considered the photographer, you have to be the one that takes the picture. Don’t be stealing the work of other artists. You can submit pictures for other photographers that took pictures with your camera or phone, but give credit where credit is due.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is it. Thems the rules!

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of PLAY in this place that is in a constant state of play next Monday.

And Your Favorite Songs by Heart

Seems like a good time to clean up all the pictures from March that I haven’t shared before. There is still one more collection, but I’m going to keep those for myself I think. I don’t keep many for myself, dang exhibitionist tendencies, but those I think I will.

Some of these pictures I took for the SHADOW reveal for when it was the theme for THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE. Others were taken for the theme ABSTRACT, but I didn’t use them because there can only be one.

I love doing ABSTRACT photography. It isn’t popular. I think I’ve only heard one person ever say they enjoy it, (hi Monica), but on the other hand, there aren’t people that openly hate it, like my flowertography. I’m sure there are people that hate it, just nobody sends me messages about how much they hate my abstract photography, like people do with my flowertography.

Triplet + Jonah Birthday Party – 2022

A few months back I picked up some cakes and Jim and went to the Wolf Lodge near Kansas City for the birthday party of the triplets and Jonah. I didn’t get to spend much time there cause Jim is kind of like Cinderella. He expires after being away from home too long.

I also didn’t get many pictures because we drove 4 hours to catch the last 25 minutes of the party. The rest of the day was spent in the Wolf Lodge water park area and I didn’t take any pictures there.

Here are some of the pictures I took:

Despite its brevity, it was a good trip. I wish I had some pictures of the kids playing in the water park, but I didn’t get any. I wonder what will happen with the birthday parties this year?

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is BOOKS:

WEEK 386 - BOOKS
BOOKS

BOOKS! What a great theme for Year 10 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what is a BOOKS image? Simply put, it is any image where the subject or a major compositional element is a BOOK or BOOKS.

Happy photo harvesting!

Hard Way Home

I never did learn how to follow the rules
I never was good at sleeping while the moon was full
I just lie and burn
Wreck my mind while the planet turns
I sometimes wish I could start again
I’d try and do the right thing every now and then
I’d step in line
That’s what I would do if I could turn back time
-Brandi Carlile

Thursdays are for flowers! This Thursday I’m going to share the final collection of flower images I took at the Iowa State Fair this year.
